tyrex2017··on After spending $57M on Facebook ads, I was kicked off
One possible explanation: Facebook knows the business violates its rules, but it cant share details, as they were obtained illegally (eg violating privacy rights)..
tyrex2017··on No More Free Work from Marak: Pay Me or Fork This
totally fine, but I really believe he would see 10x the job offers if he had phrased it more politely. 6 figures should be easy for his skill level.

i am afraid many super cool bosses will avoid him because he reminds them of people who are pissed off and cause issues.

tyrex2017··on California appeals court rules Uber, Lyft must reclassify drivers as employees
Subjectively comparing to other threads, this thread has 2 standard deviations more pro-Uber comments than would be normal for such a thread.

I would bet 2.5 to 1.5 that Uber PR is at work here :)

tyrex2017··on Google and Oracle's decade-long copyright battle reaches Supreme Court
as long as its not a horse..
tyrex2017··on App Review process updates
Maybe an opportunity to change their 30% model? It could be a path towards building a case to change their pricing. I may be be wishfulthinking, though.
tyrex2017··on Persisting as a solo founder
agree with everything but havent gotten to know people who work 12+ hours but spend a lot on news sites

i have worked these hours in the past, plus my colleagues, and when there is so much pressure the least we wanted to do, and the least we did, was spending time on news sites because we were constantly tired and would rather choose to spend half an hour more on sleep

tyrex2017··on Ask HN: Do kids make you happier?
thats a good point

i dont make that assumption. just wanted to keep the topic simpler.

i agree, on the other hand, that my question is just one factor among a few when deciding on whether to have children

tyrex2017··on Ask HN: Do kids make you happier?
terrific.. you should write a blog post about how you did this/managed life with 12 kids

would be an interesting read :)

tyrex2017··on Ask HN: Do kids make you happier?
Point taken, I just wanted to use a shorter version than her/his
tyrex2017··on The Death of Retail Is Overrated
sounds like he is trying to first convince himself. i dont think he succeeded.

retail is too expensive to be worth it for the bottom 50%.

for me personally, i need top 5% money before the retail experience would be worth its premium

of course, its laughable that i as an introvert techie think that others think similar

tyrex2017··on Ask HN: What is your best advice for a junior software developer?
as in tensorflow stack traces
tyrex2017··on In killing Inbox, Google takes another swipe at its most passionate users
they will kill anything that 99% of their users dont care for. it would be insane not to.

it is strange for us people because we know 1000s who care for those products/features

tyrex2017··on Ask HN: How to organize personal knowledge?
evernote has served me best, with one notebook, and using search

it supports attachments and other stuff

eg when i research “how to do password less ssh”, i will create a note with that title for future use. it has worked so far.

tyrex2017··on Be kind (2016)
amen
tyrex2017··on Apple and Google Face Growing Revolt Over App Store ‘Tax’
In the past I supported the Google and Apple tax, because they kind of created this opportunity.

Now I believe they have gotten their money from this innovation, and the tax should be reduced to sth like 8%

It is a monopoly now (inside Android or iOS phones).

tyrex2017··on Italy bridge: Genoa motorway collapse kills at least 22
hn is the one site i come to detox from news (porn).

hopefully for me, i wont see so many news here in the future

tyrex2017··on Kanban for E-Mail
i take the opposite side:

even saving one hour per month with this tool is worth more than 12 usd, to me (compare hourly wage).

i just want a free month to be sure i am not giving out money to a bad product.

tyrex2017··on Where the Super-Rich Go to Buy Their Second Passport
it is illegal. saving a mil is not worth the risk to someone who has 500 of them
tyrex2017··on San Francisco's zoning makes it illegal to build apartments in 73.5% of the city
the point is that owner should pay (high) tax on the high offer he is not accepting.
tyrex2017··on Ask HN: Why do you keep a personal knowledge base?
another benefit: writing something down burns it more into your brain, so u more likely will remember it without even looking it up
tyrex2017··on Ask HN: Resumé review service?
i guess if you just posted yours here, you would get a ton of feedback here
tyrex2017··on Scikit-learn user guide (2017) [pdf]
so much value in one free python library. inspiring.

also ironic that it is for free, but adjustments to real world business problems are as expensive as you want (consultants, coders)

tyrex2017··on Predicting Price Changes in Ethereum (2017) [pdf]
i have read papers in the best journals. not better, not more insightful, not deeper, than this one. in fact, they usually would have included only half the models.

the only question i have: such worse performance by nn is strange, it should be similar to logistic regression..

tyrex2017··on AI winter is well on its way
Have you spent real money on something because it used Deep Learning?

Me not.

Maybe indirectly, ads have become more targeted, but we cant be sure how much. It might be just a dtandard small optimization

tyrex2017··on OpenAI Charter
i love your points, and agree mostly.

that is why i express support that small entities like openai are thinking about ai science fiction outcomes.

i didnt say we need a cross government, 1 trillion funded, manhatten like project to protect us from agi, which is what we would need IF there was a reasonable chance that AGI will be developed in the next years.

in the meantime let some smart minds think about it, just as a little insurance and preparation

tyrex2017··on OpenAI Charter
point is: AI is different than your usual game, in that the winner might appear randomly, and destroy the world if she makes a mistake. so i believe open ais points are warrented
tyrex2017··on Ask HN: Is a blog clever marketing or just a waste of time?
for a mobile app: absolutely not worth while

for a product like a “food supplement”: yes, totally

the model is: right something useful which will get very relevant traffic via google, and be able to convert this traffic immediately to money

tyrex2017··on China to bar people with bad 'social credit' from planes, trains
better title would be: china expands list of people prohibited to use public transport

right now it is clickbait

tyrex2017··on Rules for happiness (from a hacker who sold his company)
for me rule 8 (mindfulness/meditation) has helped most. but all those rules are easier written down than practiced. I would love to see a guide on how to practice those..
tyrex2017··on Preparing for Malicious Uses of AI
well you didnt say majority so the word plenty is ok actually

i agree that it is a real problem for lets say millions of people.

but what counts is the majority opinion for me. there are all kinds of contrary (!) opinions among small subgroups of the population, and thus it isnt possible to adjust wide-ranging policies to those opinions
