tyng··on 41,000,006 reasons why I think we're in a bubble
At least the domain name is worth some dollars.

I actually quite like the concept - makes group photo sharing fun & easy. But worth $41m? Not yet

tyng··on I wanna work at Instagram
Agreed, seen a few too many these days
tyng··on NASA scientist finds evidence of alien life
Second that, the so called "astrobiology" is one of those fields which we don't know if the study is at all scientific or meaningful until we meet the alien in person. I remember watching a video of the 80's featuring a Professor of "Supernatural Studies".

These are, as one may call the study of "unknown unknowns"

tyng··on Poll: Why are you building a web app? (Research for my book)
Web app is the way of the future, rapid deployment is much more fun and effective than developing desktop software
tyng··on Microsoft has just registered bi.ng
Unfortunately they don't offer .ng on their website, probably still a over-the-counter thing
tyng··on Microsoft has just registered bi.ng
Very true, without the power of Microsoft it's hard to maintain that domain name... in such a remote place.. I mind as well just give up.

And likewise I searched the government website and none of its accredited registrars offer straight .ng registration

tyng··on Ex-girlfriend exacts revenge through Google Images
I'd be pretty touched if my gf does something like this for me - only if they were all good messages.
tyng··on Microsoft has just registered bi.ng
I've been waiting for this for long, so which registry can we use to get .ng?
tyng··on Plenty Of Fish Hacked – Chris Russo’s explains how he did it
I wonder where the discussion of "murderer" or "Russian mafia" first came up, seems totally unrelated to the incidence and random for anybody to bring it up first. Could be some kind of pronunciation miscommunication like "member" -> "murderer"
tyng··on Text message blows up suicide bomber by accident
So the bombing at the airport wasn't an isolated incident, but a planned attack. What's the motive behind it? Why Russia?
tyng··on Do It Yourself Masters in Financial Engineering
The question is, once you get in, how do you get out?
tyng··on Union Square Ventures announces The Opportunity Fund
"Defensibility is more about network effects than patents." Interesting point.
tyng··on Mac App Store: Open for Business
iTunes should be renamed, it's not just about the "tunes" anymore
tyng··on Mac App Store: Open for Business
Broadband speed being one reason it didn't happen earlier I suppose, payment infrastructure is another one
tyng··on Mac App Store: Open for Business
Wow, this is a major step towards creating an uniform marketplace for not just mobile and tablet but also traditional computers. It does seem like a natural next step, it should even have happened earlier, how come nobody thought of it until today?
tyng··on Bing Adds Natural Language To Flight Search
Perhaps Google would want to acquire Adioso (YC) to compete?
tyng··on Mozilla: first impressions from China
China's struggle for a free and better web is more of a political issue than a technological issue. I praise the good intent of people at Mozilla, but fear the task is much more complex than it seems to be.
tyng··on Google Hotpot
Sure, but at least until now we haven't seen the tipping point for a change in Google's product design approach.

In any case that wasn't my point, my point was that as an entrepreneur one shouldn't be deterred by the mere fact that a big competitor is moving into your market

tyng··on Google Hotpot
If I were Yelp, I wouldn't be worried - reason: think Google's other failed attempts: buzz, latitude, video (before acquiring Youtube) etc. Google is best at Search, no doubt, but there are certain areas Google engineers just don't get, which is more of the result of its corporate culture and strategic focus. Especially since Google seemed to have failed at creating social-based products many times in the past, whereas review sites like Yelp, is very social.

Of course there are exceptions, like Gmail and Maps. But the mere fact that Google is entering my market wouldn't make me worry. Keep calm and carry on!

tyng··on Students Read Hacker Monthly For Free
Also, it's a good way to develop loyal customer for the future. If your target customers are college educated white collars, then tapping into that market early is a great way to establish top of mind awareness of your brand for the future.
tyng··on Ask PG: How much did the lunch with you sell for?
What's with the downvotes, people? I agree that Karma points shouldn't be used as a reward, but I think most people here participated because guessing/estimating value of a lunch with pg was a challenging and fun thing to do. Now, is that against HN spirit? Does it deserve a punishment? Relax, geez.
tyng··on Ask PG: How much did the lunch with you sell for?
$1050
tyng··on An umbrella designed using aerodynamic theory to withstand 100km/h winds
Thanks! I hope they handed them out at my uni too, lol
tyng··on An umbrella designed using aerodynamic theory to withstand 100km/h winds
I always hated the fact that normal umbrellas have their handles in the middle, especially when I'm sharing an umbrella with someone else.

This umbrella solved two problems for me! I'm seriously thinking about ordering one. My only concern is that would one side of the umbrella be significantly heavier than the other side? That'd be a pain to hold it up all the time.

tyng··on How To Land a Job at Google
Apparently not, from what i've heard big VCs only hire experienced people, most firms prefer hiring ex investment bankers. There's really not many Entry level jobs in the VC industry (Source: wall street oasis forum)
tyng··on Theoretical Physics, In Your Own Time
Good advice, cheers!
tyng··on Theoretical Physics, In Your Own Time
Becoming a theoretical physicist was one of my aspirations after reading Stephen Hawking's A Brief History of Time (understood half of it, give or take) and being good at Physics in high school. Really appreciate the effort to categorise every steps and resources necessary to attempt this field.

But at the same time this is starting to seem daunting... how long would it take to go through all this material on a part-time basis? Well, my original plan was to do it after I semi-retire.

tyng··on Ask HN: How Did you hack your education?
I graduated with a slightly above average score by not studying for the whole semester but cram everything in the last two weeks before exams. I used my free time (> 25 hrs per week) to run an entrepreneurs club at uni that I cofounded, learned a huge lot about networking, raising money, marketing, teamwork, leadership etc etc... The club did a lot of impressive things.

Sadly none of the skills I learned from my extra curricular activities counted on my resume because the HRs treated it as a standard non-commitment student club thing. Truth be told now I'm having trouble finding jobs, and I wish I actually studied during my uni years because I felt I learned nothing from it... But that I don't really regret, what I regret was not starting up an actual business whilst still a student because after you graduate social pressure start to come from every direction to force you find a job (girlfriend, parents, friends, etc)

Sorry, I didn't hack my education. This is more of a not-to-do

tyng··on Ask HN: Where to find non-geek jobs at startups
From investment bank to PA? That'd be a huge pay cut
tyng··on Ask HN: if I name my startup "XXX"Upon, would I get sued by StumbleUpon?
Lol! No Should probably just put one X - meaning could be any word. I'll edit the title with quotation marks now. But thanks for the comment, I wondered how whitehouse.com got away with it
