tynan··on Why Cruise Ships are My Favorite Remote Work Location
I don't look like a "poor bloke who has trouble talking to people" because I learned pickup and learned how to talk to people. I was very fortunate to be in the right place at the right time and be taken under the wings of the best PUAs. As a result I went from being a VERY shy socially awkward guy to being generally comfortable around people. Pickup changed my life for the better-- one of the best things that happened to me.

It is me, but it was taken probably around 2005, when I was 24. Funny how much things change over the years...

Yeah... this is my 12th cruise or so now. I really love them. For a while I was going twice a year pretty regularly. The cruise aggregator started as a way for me to find the best prices (because cruisehotsheet.com went down), and I decided to try to make money with it to fund access to better cruise data.

Also... I didn't post either of these... did one of my 2 minute cruise-internet email checks and was pretty surprised to see that I was on the front page twice.

Thank you!

Thank you! I actually redesigned it to be simpler on the flight over to where the cruise started.

Will be writing that post very soon... I don't normally submit my own posts to HN, but I will submit that one if no one else does.

Thank you. I love you, too.

Original author here... I wrote the post in transit between those ports. On cruises you go to a lot of ports... this particular one ends up in Florida (Florence to Florida, with 8 stops or so)

Author of the post, confirmed asshole, here. In most cruise ships you do not tip for anything until the end, and it is a flat rate. Enjoy.
tynan··on Cruise Sheet: Find cruise deals
I'm the creator of this site... I tried some algorithms to build something like this. The problem is that there are peak seasons that make the price crazy expensive. To be on contiguous ships all year, the best price seemed to be around $30k... if you don't care that the ports line up (which probably makes it impossible to actually do) it was around $20k.

Scraping from a few sources and coallating the data. Hoping I make some money of commissions to fund buying access to good data.

Thanks for the feedback. This was just a weekend project, so I have a lot of improvements to make, but not a ton of spare time to dedicate to them. I'll get there, though.

The low price is double occupancy-- a few people have gotten stuck on that, so I have to make it clearer.

tynan··on Ask HN: What are you working on and why is it cool?
It's intended to compete directly with hosted Wordpress. You can import directly from Wordpress XML, too.
tynan··on Ask HN: What are you working on and why is it cool?
I forget exactly what we paid, but it was ~$7500, I think. Expensive, but we figured that it would build some trust and wouldn't be an embarrassing domain to have in your blog title (sett.com/alec vs superblog9000.com/alec). I think we bought it through Sedo, where prices vary wildly.

In searching, we also found this seller on ebay (no affiliation) that had a bunch pretty cheaply. I sort of liked omot.com, but not enough to buy. http://stores.ebay.com/Short-Domains/LLLL-com-4-Letter-dot-c...

Sett (http://sett.com)

It's a new blogging platform that helps people build audiences. Our oldest users (1 year) have seen roughly 100% increase in daily traffic, twice as many comments, etc. My personal blog has doubled daily visitors and growth rate for subscribers went from 1% to 10%.

tynan··on My Friends and I Bought an Island
It's really poorly written, but here's what I wrote about it 8 years ago: http://tynan.com/the-infamous-ghetto-indoor-pool
tynan··on My Friends and I Bought an Island
To be fair, I never got the penguin :(
tynan··on My Friends and I Bought an Island
Haha, thanks. I had a great time communal living in school. Everyone involved in the island is trustworthy, fair, reasonable, etc., so I think it will be good. We also outlined ways to deal with disputes in advance.
tynan··on My Friends and I Bought an Island
Not really. Did as much research as I could, and most of the value of the island to me is having a group of friends with an island to build up by our own designs.

Also, we did check it out before wiring the money. If it was burnt down or something really bad, we wouldn't have bought it.

tynan··on My Friends and I Bought an Island
I think the plan my friend was using was Rogers iPad plan... data only, but it was really reasonable.
tynan··on My Friends and I Bought an Island
Awesome idea, thanks!
tynan··on My Friends and I Bought an Island
We saw an unusually high amount of cemeteries on the way to the island... if the zombies rise up, we are totally screwed.
tynan··on My Friends and I Bought an Island
I've seen those-- would prefer something with windows, and it would need to be able to withstand some pretty serious weather (maybe those can... haven't researched).

Thinking probably a 30' yurt for the communal building, and smaller geodesic domes for individual dwellings.

tynan··on My Friends and I Bought an Island
Thanks! That's definitely the highlight reel!
tynan··on My Friends and I Bought an Island
Thanks-- this is all very good relevant advice. Hadn't thought about digesting composter at all, but that's a great idea.

I don't mind too much if people respectfully visit the island when we're not there. We told the really awesome neighbor he could visit the island whenever, so maybe he'll guard it a bit. He could certainly see from his dock if another boat was on it.

tynan··on My Friends and I Bought an Island
Yeah, but it's my ONLY island.
tynan··on My Friends and I Bought an Island
VERY useful site-- thank you!
tynan··on My Friends and I Bought an Island
Thanks! We have a bunch of rules to cover things like this.

Everyone is expecting to pitch in another $1000-2000 next year to build a communal yurt, battery bank, get a boat, etc.

We're told by locals that trespassing isn't a problem. We could put motion detectors / cameras if necessary, but I doubt it will be.

Thanks!

Yes, but only one person per week. Should have it all to myself in 9 weeks if everything goes according to plan...
tynan··on My Friends and I Bought an Island
Yes, there is strong LTE and HSPA+ service there, and Canada has some decent PAYG plans.
