ty_a··on Digital coins may be on the verge of going mainstream
Not to be overly pedantic but the "shell" and "GNU toolchain" are literally not Linux.
ty_a··on Bitcoin Cash Soars to $700, Coinbase Customers Threaten to Sue
75% of the hashrate was just advertrolling. Which had the side effect of keeping the difficulty high. They should have forked Bitcoin and used a different PoW... Oh wait that's Litecoin.

ty_a··on Docker vs. Kubernetes vs. Mesos
IIRC $5k per node, per year.
ty_a··on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.4 Released
Wow I didn't know that. Very interesting to hear. Hopefully Docker support is considered as well.
ty_a··on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.4 Released
I highly doubt Red Hat will ever touch ZFS. Oracle and Red Hat have a very tenuous relationship.

I hope Red Hat will support bcachefs though. I think it's the most promising alternative FS.

ty_a··on The sea was never blue
The best explanation I've heard is that words for colors come to exist after the invention of artificially produced pigments and dyes.
ty_a··on Why aren’t distributed systems engineers working on blockchain technology?
Most mining is hydro powered.
ty_a··on GNU Ring 1.0 released
Came to ask the same. This would be interesting as an alternative to Google Hangouts if an html frontend could be used.
ty_a··on Foxconn to Build $10B Factory in U.S
$3 billion in subsidies for 3,000 jobs.

ty_a··on Crack WPA/WPA2 Wi-Fi Routers with Aircrack-Ng and Hashcat
On most recent firmware, there is an exponential backoff on WPS connection attempts.
ty_a··on Local Rails Development with Docker and Docker Compose
Docker for Mac uses Xhyve, a hypervisor ported from FreeBSD. It could be more performant than Virtualbox but I have not tested them side by side.
ty_a··on Local Rails Development with Docker and Docker Compose
I see a roughly 66% performance hit on docker for Mac in most metrics.

Not a deal breaker but I prefer to do development on Linux as well for that reason.

ty_a··on Overengineering the Deployment of Static HTML with CI/CD Docker and Kubernetes
Why not S3 and Cloudfront or equivalent?
ty_a··on CoinDash’s ICO Website Has Been Hacked
Coinbase could probably do it. If there was an investigation into the theft, that would probably be a terrible idea.
ty_a··on CoinDash’s ICO Website Has Been Hacked
For anyone wondering, 45k ETH is about 7.65M USD.
ty_a··on Amazon possibly working on new stand-alone messaging app called Anytime
Unless there is a self hosted requirement.
ty_a··on OpenBSD on the Huawei MateBook X
This hardware looks to be a pretty good value. I was looking to get an X1 Carbon but this has piqued my interest.
ty_a··on The State of Developer Ecosystem in 2017
Most places I've worked at had policies against contributing to open source projects.
ty_a··on Did Airbnb Kill the Mountain Town?
This is truly an old meme. Replace the word automation with: horseless carriage, assembly line, ice makers, airplanes, digital computers, etc...

I'm sure it's entirely different this time though.

ty_a··on Photos: Life inside of China’s massive and remote Bitcoin mines
Extremely cheap hydro power at around 0.01-0.02 USD/KWh. China has more hydro power than customers in a lot of areas.

Labor and regulatory costs are a huge factor as well.

ty_a··on Photos: Life inside of China’s massive and remote Bitcoin mines
That's up for debate. Facebook and Google use DC in their datacenters to save costs. Azure has a requirement for optional DC power from their vendors and might be using it actively. I think AWS has looked into using DC power as well but isn't using it afaik.
ty_a··on GDAX will restore the balance of margin called users with company funds
Unless it's an issue with the trading platform itself and they think this is cheaper than a class action lawsuit.
ty_a··on Show HN: EC2 prices per GB of memory
IIRC EBS is based on GNBD.
ty_a··on Ethereum crashed from $319 to 10c on GDAX after ‘multimillion dollar’ trade
>but ethereum/bitcoin aren't fiat currencies?

Fiat currencies are created by fiat (legal declaration). No government created either, so no, they are not fiat currencies.

ty_a··on Ask HN: How liquid is Bitcoin?
If it is, use a different exchange there are lots of them.
ty_a··on Ubuntu on AWS Gets Serious Performance Boost with AWS-Tuned Kernel
Not an automatic update but it is in the standard repo as linux-image-aws. But new AMIs come with the AWS kernel by default.
ty_a··on Google Cloud Platform is the first cloud provider to offer Intel Skylake
FWIW, Azure disables hyperthreading on their servers. 1 core = 1 real core.
