txsh··on Tesla employees say automaker produces flawed parts requiring costly rework
Can't put a satellite in orbit. Good marketing though.
txsh··on The Collector’s Fallacy
To combat this, I’ve started going through all my old bookmarks and compiling my own repository of knowledge on a self-hosted Bookstack. I highly recommend doing this. I feel like I assimilate a lot more knowledge than before when I would just read something once on HN and then bookmark it for posterity.
txsh··on Theranos Misled Investors and Consumers Who Used Its Blood Test
These companies pay journalists to promote their scams. Everyone who took their money and wrote a favorable article should go to prison.

Also, the way she compatmentalized her business and threatened former employees proves she was complicit.

txsh··on Feature extraction without learning using Hierarchical Temporal Memory
I’m surprised to see such blatant racism on Hacker News.
txsh··on Theranos, CEO Holmes, and Former President Balwani Charged with Fraud
Good. Now lets put everyone who they paid to hype them in prison as well, every journalist, blogger, hacker news poster who received money in exchange for writing a favorable comment.
txsh··on Autism's social deficits in animal model are reversed by an anti-cancer drug
It's something everybody else would want because its unreasonably difficult to deal with autistic people. I have sympathy for those who can't help it but that sympathy evaporates the second there's a cure.
txsh··on YouTube will add information from Wikipedia to videos about conspiracies
The audacity of YouTube to go after conspiracy theories while actively engaged in a conspiracy:

txsh··on $560M Powerball Winner Can Keep Her Name Private, Judge Rules
What makes you believe any lottery is legit even when we are given names?
txsh··on A New Era of Batteries Spells Trouble for Gas in America
I don't know why Californians put up with this mess from their politicians.

In Texas, one company maintains the infrastructure and a variety of companies compete to provide service to customers. Separating these concerns means cheap, reliable electricity. Power is quickly restored after natural disasters and we don't have brownouts during the summer. Electricity is affordable and we don't pay extra during peak hours.

I pay $0.10/kWh for a plan 100% provided by wind power. When power is in demand, the smart meter my electric company provided for free (with free installation) will adjust my thermostat and give me a credit on my bill (under a program I opted into).

If my state made me pay $0.40/kWh for unreliable energy, I'd be furious.

txsh··on Uber self-driving trucks are now moving cargo for Uber Freight customers
Annecdotal evidence but I know two people who started in their 50s. It’s a good second career for people who are getting too slow for manual labor.
txsh··on Uber self-driving trucks are now moving cargo for Uber Freight customers
When I graduted high school during the .com bust my father told me not to major in CS in college because there wouldn’t be any jobs for me when I graduated.

txsh··on The risk of nitrites and nitrates in bacon
You, as the author, should mention that stores such as Whole Foods Market have sold bacon and other meats for years without nitrates or nitrites.

txsh··on Ex-Google Employee Sues Alleging He Was Fired Over Pro-Diversity Posts
The workplace is a professional environment and company resources should never be used to promote someone's personal political agenda.

Companies don't care about social politics. They care about liability.

Chevalier became a liability when Damore quoted him in his lawsuit. Before that, he could say whatever he wanted not because Google agreed with him but because his opinions were popular and his antics were unlikely to provoke the other employees. But the second firing him was more profitable than keeping him, they dropped him like a rock.

Don't take your politics to work and don't be a bigot to a coworker even if everyone else agrees with you. Stop making memes and do your damn job.

txsh··on Face-verify.js: Monitoring who is physically looking at a website
Do people realy think identities are stolen by criminals peaking over shoulders?

And, if so, couldn’t they use a camera, or mirror, or periscope to bypass this software?

txsh··on Counting Calories Is Not the Key to Weight Loss, New Study Finds
You’re not counting total calories. You’re limiting calorie density. Counting calories ignores satiety. Watching calorie density allows you to be full while limiting the calories you eat.
txsh··on Ask HN: What can I do as a software engineer to help the underpriviliged?
That comment took a weird turn into Iran-Contra.
txsh··on Ask HN: What can I do as a software engineer to help the underpriviliged?
The median income worldwide is around $10,000 and a third of the world lives on less than $2/day. If you want to help the underprivileged you have to or your money has to leave the US.
txsh··on We’re witnessing the fastest decline in Arctic sea ice in at least 1,500 years

txsh··on Ask HN: How do you manage “knowledge”
Bookmarks aren’t enough. You lose old material when the URL changes or the site gets taken down. And you can’t search the content of bookmarked pages.

Text files don’t allow you to embed images, video. Structuring of data is too one-dimensional.

Other document files take too much time and energy to search and maintain.

Online services like Evernote cost money and have too many annoying quirks.

Mediawiki is too slow and bloated. It’s editor sucks and it takes too much work to upload and embed images.

BookStack is the way to go:

https://www.bookstackapp.com

It’s a wiki. It’s fast. It’s searchable. It’s got a great WYSIWYG/Markdown editor with code highlighting.

You can manually upload images or upload them by pasting then directly into the page.

It’s Book-Chapter-Page organization is easy and intuitive.

It’s also free, open source, and easy to self-host.

txsh··on The Gluten Project: A Search Engine for 35K Certified Gluten-Free Products
O-tay.
txsh··on The Gluten Project: A Search Engine for 35K Certified Gluten-Free Products
That hypothesis comes from an old study that got a lot of media attention at the time (2013 I think) but it has since been debunked. People with gluten sensitivity respond negatively to gluten even when on a non-FODMAP diet.
txsh··on Ask HN: Is it 'normal' to struggle so hard with work?
Find another freelancer with the same problem and keep each other motivated/accountable. You don’t have to share work, just general information about your activity. You’re more likely to keep pace if you know someone will notice when you fall behind.
txsh··on The Gluten Project: A Search Engine for 35K Certified Gluten-Free Products
Don't be so sure it's unrelated. I ate gluten for the first 25 years of my life. I stopped eating it for more serious problems but, when I did, the knee pain I had since 15 also went away.
txsh··on The Gluten Project: A Search Engine for 35K Certified Gluten-Free Products
Gluten is in virtually everything.

I've found packaged salad that contains gluten because the vegetables were on a conveyor belt dusted with wheat to keep the salad from sticking.

Flour is used to thicken. If it has a sauce or gravy, it was probably thickened with flour. If it's a soup, it was probably thickened with flour.

Flour is used to make things stick when cooking. If it's breaded, it probably has flour. If it has added spices, the spices were probably mixed with flour. If it has ground meat, the meat was probably mixed with breadcrumbs to make it stay together.

Wheat is used as a filler in fake foods. If the food is made with tofu or fake meat, it probably has gluten. If it has bacon bits, its chock full of gluten.

If one of the ingredients is soy sauce, it probably has gluten. If one of the ingredients is malt, or malt syrup, or malt extract, or malt anything, it has gluten.

Sometimes restaurants will put pancake batter in scrambled eggs to make them fluffier.

Almost everything in grocery stores and restaurants has gluten in it.

On the other hand, the vast majority of people with celiac disease don't know they have it. And those with non-celiac gluten sensitivity remember the weeks or months of needless pain and suffering before they tried an elimination diet.

Excluding gluten lets you know if gluten is making you sick.
