twoquestions··on Ask HN: RFS: Modern SQL/db editor
Have you looked at DataSpell? I haven't used it myself but it looks like it fits at least some of what you need.

twoquestions··on Bun is much faster than Node.js 22 at decoding Base64 but both rely on same lib
"Concurrently" is a nodejs library for running more than one task at once, it's necessary if you want to build Typescript and Tailwind with one call to `npm run build`, for example.

It's kind of a PITA to use, and just calling a Bun script is better.

twoquestions··on Ask HN: Why is nobody manufacturing low tech electric cars in 2024?
I wonder the same, there's a bunch of budget electric bikes out there, I'd love something small that I can get around in the winter with!
twoquestions··on Ask HN: Best Personal Laptop in 2024?
What are you going to be using it for? Gaming? AI model training? Wordpress dev? Writing?

Your answer will change radically depending on these things. Personally, an out-of-support Macbook Pro from 2016 with Fedora on it has worked really well for me.

twoquestions··on Students invent quieter leaf blower
I'm genuinely sorry you have assholes for neighbors.

If it's any consolation, not every rural area is like that, at least around here people just want to be left alone.

Personally I'd buy one of these in an instant, I like being able to enjoy the peace and quiet!

twoquestions··on Students invent quieter leaf blower
I love my battery powered mower and trimmer (wow there's so many names for that)! I can mow the lawn and come back in and relax with a quiet show or game!
twoquestions··on Picotron Is a Fantasy Workstation
Man this feels great to me. The Pico-8 feels a bit too old-school and janky to me despite being a great bit of software, the picotron feels a lot more like my childhood. I'm excited to start playing with it!
twoquestions··on Meta outage
Thank you for posting, I'm glad you can generally find service status better here than status pages that never show downtime.
twoquestions··on Tailwind color palette generator
If you're looking for grab and go components, Daisy UI or Flowbite might be more your speed, I've used both with minimal headache.

twoquestions··on Ask HN: What are your predictions for 2024?
There will be some black swan event that dominates the elections that we have no idea about/hasn't happened yet now.

The US economy continues to roar ahead of the rest of the world, to the shock of everyone.

The April total eclipse is really cool.

twoquestions··on I think I need to go lie down
That was my initial gut reaction, this will be an utter nightmare to customize and integrate. Wonderful for prototyping though.
twoquestions··on Blender 4.0 release notes
This is amazing, it reminds me of Wile E Coyote cartoons which were always my favorite.

Thank you for posting this :)

twoquestions··on Starlink achieves cash-flow breakeven, says SpaceX CEO Musk
Hard agreement with all of this. As much as I'd really love Starlink to do well, Musk has negative reliability.
twoquestions··on My Presidential Platform
In addition to being funny as hell, I actually kind of like the Liturgy idea, but it's an uncomfortable middle ground between private enterprise and taxation. I want to like it more than I do.
twoquestions··on A room-temperature superconductor? New developments
Even if this doesn't pan out, I'll dare to hope we get useful stuff out of this, like how we got Duct (duck?) tape and silly putty.

If it does, hoo boy!

twoquestions··on EVE Online: Add-in for MS Excel
If you like that and 18th century naval history, you'll also like Rule the Waves 3, which also makes no bones about being a spreadsheet sim. Definitely on my wishlist!

twoquestions··on The culture map: How to navigate foreign cultures in business
The book gets into that a little bit (at least what I read in the Amazon preview), the gist was it's very Not Great to say "You're an American so you'll do this", but rather to say "American business culture generally expects this", which is more accurate.

Despite being American, I've had a boss literally ask me to "read their mind" on something, I'm shocked I outlasted them in the company despite my low rank compared to them. Luckily for me subsequent leadership was more forthright.

twoquestions··on Taxonomy of Procrastination
If my understanding of history is reliable, there are times when being in such a state can help your odds of survival, like if your country is occupied by an insane murdering tyrant. Your body wants to keep you alive much more than it wants to keep you happy.
twoquestions··on The curse and blessings of dynamic SQL (2004-2022)
This is the way. I inherited a very long SP that built a SQL string within the procedure then `sp_executesql`'ed the resulting string. It was also at the very core of our product, which made it a living nightmare to support, because if you messed anything up all Hell would break loose.

I spent a good couple months translating it to C#, and making a few improvements while I was at it. Absolutely 100% worth it, those improvements made it possible to add features to make supporting the product much easier for frontline support to help people.

The only benefit is we could cowboy updates directly to prod instantly. If that made your heart skip a beat, congrats, you actually give a damn about change management!

twoquestions··on Master Plan Part 3
I just hope bits of this plan can actually do useful work, I admit I don't know enough about energy to comment intelligently.

What I'm really afraid of is Elon torpedoing this because one of his new friends told him it'd 'own the libs' or some other fit of pique.

I hope it moves the needle in a positive direction.

twoquestions··on Turn your backyard into a biodiversity hotspot
Thank you for posting this, it really made my day :)
twoquestions··on More than five whys and “layer eight” problems
This is a common failure in authoritarian organizations. We'll be in a much better place when Corporate America either adopts or is forced to adopt a more egalitarian way of management.

This is one of the major reasons why I chose to make less money working at a smaller company, as it isn't big enough to accommodate these "reality distortion fields".

I keep wanting to read Moral Mazes, but unfortunately I've yet to get to it.

twoquestions··on United States tells citizens: Leave Russia immediately
> Am I wrong to be concerned?

Fortunately yes.

There are very long and well-respected traditions when it comes to nukes, and despite Russian propaganda and shitposters going on about nuclear tidal waves and other nonsense, serious diplomats have maintained that nuclear policy remains the same, which means they'll only use nukes if there's an existential threat to Russia (which getting their ass handed to them in Ukraine is not), or enemy nuclear strike (which we aren't about to do).

Here's a deep dive from someone smarter than me in these things, it put my mind at ease and I hope it works for you too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxOO0hCCSk4

twoquestions··on “How America took out the Nord Stream pipeline”
What's with the question mark in the title? Hersh certainly doesn't frame this as a question.

Unless it's a miskey of some kind which sounds like the most plausible explanation.

twoquestions··on “How America took out the Nord Stream pipeline”
My thoughts exactly.

If this is true and more evidence comes out, the usual suspects will be screaming it from the rooftops, if not this narrative will die in obscurity. There's been a lot of misinformation about this war, and a bunch of people who for a variety of reasons want to blame the US for it and are willing to believe some incredible things if they support that narrative.

twoquestions··on Ask HN: Is it unwise to post conservative opinions as a tech worker?
Depending on where you are, the opposite is true. I worked for a while in a hard-right state for an oil company, and failing to proclaim current conservative values with sufficient enthusiasm was a serious career limiting move. Luckily I've since moved on.

Engaging with political debate on Twitter is a terrible idea no matter what your ideology, no matter how mainstream your opinions.

twoquestions··on The window trick of Las Vegas hotels
Hard same, I was wondering if I was crazy! You might also want to look into solarpunk art and urban design, at least to me it feels authentic like the monster building.

When I was buying a house some years ago, and one of the places we were looking at was a subdivision outside town with all the houses being nearly the same. It was nice, and the seller talked about how they had chili cookoffs every year, and my partner really wanted to buy the place. My brain however was really put off, and wanted to get away, right now.

We ultimately bought a place in town, within easy walking distance of the main intersection and all of the businesses there, and right by the park so we could walk our dog. The house is much older, and looks like it's been added to over the years, which might not be to the author's taste but I really like the authenticity.

I guess when choosing between something completely designed from the top down to hide what it is and something that doesn't hide it's nature, I'm more drawn to the latter.

twoquestions··on Ask HN: I'm 40 and feel my mental ability declining. Programming seems harder.
Was going to post this. I become a foggy-headed moron when I don't do these things, and I'm plenty sharp when I do.

My area is blessed with parks and cool places to go for a walk, I hope you and OP have something similar.

twoquestions··on How to learn bootstrap(CSS framework)?
I'd very much recommend also using DaisyUI, it gives a lot of sensible defaults for buttons and such that Tailwind forces you to make decisions on. https://daisyui.com/

As for OP's question, just play with it! Futz with different classes and see what happens! A structured approach I don't think will work terribly well.

twoquestions··on Ask HN: What Recession?
People have been screaming about a recession for the last year now, with not a whole lot of hard data to back it up. Inflation aside, the US is doing well, and even on that metric we're doing better than most of Europe right now. Stories of doom grab eyeballs, and a bunch of people really want the US/Europe to have a bad time, so there's also a lot of wishcasting going on.
