two2two··on Love in the Time of Numbness; Or, Doctor Chekhov, Writer
"Anger, like false news, is cheap and easily digestible; it is the fast food of the indignant."

and

"Today, and especially today, as the threat of desensitization—and the accompanying seductions of detachment, outrage, revulsion, indignation, piety, and narcissism—looms over all our lives, we might need to ask ourselves the question that Chekhov asked himself in the spring of 1890: What will move me beyond this state of anesthesia? How will I counteract the lassitude that creeps over my soul?"

At first I was "withdrawing from engagement altogether," but now I find myself with more compassion and an urge to help myself and others move forward.

two2two··on How to Remember More of What You Learn with Spaced Repetition (2016)
Chalk me up as an Anki user. I couldn't have done as well as I have in my college español class without it. I felt like I had superpowers when I knew vocabulary that some of the native speakers struggled with.
two2two··on The relationship between social media use and well-being
As someone who doesn't participate in social media, I do see what the value was and still could be: a way for keeping up with people's lives you care a little or a lot about. My problem is, similar to yours, that the majority of content is external noise. I began to withdraw from social media when sharing external information became a norm, rather than internal information about someone's life.

two2two··on Are We Different People in Different Languages?
This article doesn't really go into what the title suggests so much as it explains that we prefer languages for different reasons. The author talks about several of her students that chose not to use their native language to write because of their negative associations with the language.

"For me, language was a kind of initiation into multiple realities."

This is how I feel about learning a second language. I feel that I'm opening a door to a land of adventure that had previously been closed.

two2two··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (March 2017)
Armstrong Economics - Machine Learning Programmers Wanted

"We are looking to hire programmers interested in the cutting edge of machine learning as well as outsourcing specialty firms with sufficient staff. On-site work will be available in the Tampa, Florida region starting in about three months..."

two2two··on Hollywood as We Know It Is Over
In summary, Hollywood is a dinosaur on its deathbed losing their strength to control the market as SV seeps into every crevice of consumers lives providing solutions Hollywood was too stubborn to embrace.
two2two··on The Health Effects of Cannabis and Cannabinoids
"It is often difficult for researchers to gain access to the quantity, quality, and type of cannabis product necessary to address specific research questions on the health effects of cannabis use"

Being unable to research the effects of specific strains and how cannabis is administered beyond oral or combustible methods limits our understanding of the true net effect in reality. Different methods for vaporizing and strains with low THC - high CBD would likely show very little evidence for negative effects on the user. However, consistent tobacco rolled cannabis cigars for a recreational user may show loads of evidence for negative effects on health. Like eating unhealthy vs eating healthy. Not all food is created equal, just like cannabis and its methods of use.

two2two··on The Middle Class Can't Afford to Live in Cities Anymore
This article mentions "hot cities" including Austin, which not too long ago was just another small eclectic city with steady growth. Once it grew large enough and provided the ingredients to hold it's own, industry wise, against other "hot cities" it became what it is today. Austin was just a little weird city in Texas when I grew up in Dallas, but now it's up there with the big boys. What this tells me is there are many Austin like cities out there waiting to be discovered and grow in a similar way. I believe, in large part, Austin's recent growth and success is attributed to the very problems presented in this article. As long as the economy keeps pushing in this direction, the more of these smaller cities will grow to compete.
two2two··on Interactive Dynamic Video
This would be fantastic for getting a feel for the tactility of a product you've not yet seen in person.
two2two··on Ask HN: Examples of reliable software you enjoy using
Wunderlist. Lightning fast sync across devices, a webapp that is indistinguishable from the local app, a free version is more than I could ask for, 4-5 features that are neatly organized/appropriately available, and even the sound it makes when I check off a task gives me joy.

There's more that I can't recall at the moment. For a simple little list application, it reminds me every time I use it that other software could be this good, too.

two2two··on Ask HN: How do you take notes other than using paper?
Used to use Evernote, then Notes in macOS, but I'm still a pen and paper person as it allows me ultimate flexibility. I also record audio on my phone, write a time in my notes next to anything I need to review later. I just don't retain the information nearly as well if I type. Using a pen/pencil like tool on a screen wouldn't work for me as I use the texture of the pen and paper as a guide to look away while still scratching down notes. As weird as it is, the act of turning a page and marking the date in the corner places a marker in my mind for when I review; practically takes me back to the moment I was writing the notes.
two2two··on My Two Years as an Anthropologist on the Photoshop Team (2015)
I can appreciate the need for an anthropological point of view when attempting to understand the shortcomings of a process that eluded the standard feedback loop before it, but I'd hope the findings are considered just a piece of the puzzle rather than the last resort for an entire solution.
two2two··on EFF Joins Coalition Opposing Dangerous CFAA Bill
This is a little different as it has to do with exceeding authorized access as an employee.

The CFAA doesn't allow TOS writers to "invent" felonies, but it does allow for a basis of prosecution against someone who breaks it.

Someone who siphons off data, breaking a TOS, will get treated the same as someone who lies on their dating profile. This is why the CFAA is too vague in its current form.

We're expected to trust that only the "big guys" will be prosecuted under the CFAA, skirting the point of having the rule of law in the first place as no interpretation of a law should be left up to the discretion of a few men.

As well, most people break at least 3 laws a day without knowing it, and they're likely breaking many more throughout the day online, just not getting prosecuted for it, but they could.

two2two··on The TV Industry Will Unravel Faster Than People Think
While TV mega-conglomerates transition into the future focusing on what they think works best for their business model to maintain/increase revenue, others like myself see what it should be, access to everything whenever access is wanted.

"Unraveling" television isn't what's happening, it's a huge knot that needs to be cut out. Netflix is now successful as a content producer, not just a distributor. Netflix has become a channel, and I'm okay with a handful of channels that collectively have all of the content that I get to choose which I subscribe. Make it simple:

Two all you can eat options: 1) Subscription w/ no ads 2) No subscription w/ ads.

- Any pre-recorded video content should be on demand through a subscription service or rental service.

- Any live content should be streamed online, with rental/purchase access for the time of the content, unless content is under one of the subscription umbrellas

- Implement better filtering systems to find content based on studio, talent, reviews/ratings, date, and the other categories already established

- Major networks need to pull the bandaid off, and stop this confusing business of licensing per device (content removal after expiration, only on web not on mobile)

While I understand this is easier said than done, we all know what the best experience would be in the end, and eventually we'll get there, but communicating that to the TV heads of yesterday shouldn't take stripping them of viewers and revenue by moving over to services such as Netflix. It's such a slow transition this way.

two2two··on The TSA is a waste of money that doesn't save lives and might actually cost them
I should be TSA Pre the first time I went through their procedure and so should everyone else. Rather than going through the arduous process and paying money for it, what's different from your screening from the one that people go through daily?

edit: deleted a word

two2two··on The TSA is a waste of money that doesn't save lives and might actually cost them
TSA is the number one reason why I don't fly and drive instead. From my POV most of the world's industries have progressed positively, but not air travel. I took a train a couple of years ago and it was a beautiful example of old merging with new. Walking through an antique of a train station, iPhone in hand, with my digital ticket ready to board; so easy and pleasant.

At that point I realized that air travel is by far the worst traveling experience money can pay for.

If an alternative airport wanted to do things a little different, such as "fly at your own risk" "no lifeguard on duty", aka no TSA b.s., I'd happily take the "at your own risk" option rather than the TSA controlled situation we're subjected to currently.

two2two··on Instagram rolling out algorithmic feeds to some users
The algorithmic feed is a compromise between adding value for the user and revenue for the company.

Feeds based on followers, the followed, hashtags, likes, and other data about a user's habits are not increasing value for the user in terms of discovery or catching up on what was missed.

In a chronological feed, if you missed something, you know when and seek out that section of time. The nuances of discovery are diminished when you trust Instagram to do that for you.

If you follow a bread maker and enjoy seeing their photos on occasion and you don't tap the heart every time, or haven't tapped the heart much in the past, you may hardly ever see their posts again. You'll have to find them, and look at their feed, which takes away from the nuance of enjoyment you once had.

The curation one builds for their feed is not always a conscious decision. You have your own process for making an enjoyable feed. Then someone else's idea of this process steps in.

A foreign feed steals your once familiar orientation.

I would appreciate a toggle between their idea of my feed vs my idea of my feed.

two2two··on The Last Days of BMX Superstar Dave Mirra
As an avid BMX rider during the mid 90's to early 2000's, Mirra was one of only a few greats, along with Lavin and Nyquist, I looked up to. This saddens me greatly, but also helps me understand a lot of my own inner turmoil growing out of my own x-games centric life. From aggressive inline skating everyday in Texas, hitting jumps in the woods of Nor-Cal on my BMX, to bombing the streets of San Francisco on a skateboard, I now better understand the feeling of thrill separation as an older, risk-averse, adult; thanks to some of the insights in this article.
two2two··on Show HN: Papier – Open a new tab and trap your best thoughts
This works great in Safari for Mac and iOS. Thank you very much for filling a void in my work flow.
two2two··on When I Was Your Age
Another issue worth noting is getting past the set requirements to be evaluated by a human. I'm 30, without a college education, and worked for Apple retail as a 'Genius' for 5 years. That meant enough at the time to get me a job at Hulu with the expectation of upward mobility. Unfortunately, Hulu's executives made poor decisions and the type of work I was doing was unbearable. After leaving, I've been unable to find a job due to my application submissions missing a key component to even be considered; a college degree. Now, no one cares I worked for Apple like they used to.
two2two··on America’s airlines are introducing a class below economy
Avg. air fares have only dropped 13.8% since 1995. Nearly 20 years of innovation later.
