turns0ut··on Inflation Has Outpaced Wage Growth. Now It’s Cutting into Spending
I find present concern with debt the future has no real obligation to pay more concerning than the actual debt. It’s a huge distraction.

What happens if the future bails on paying off dead peoples debt? Get sued by dead financiers if they legislate that dead peoples contracts are not theirs to honor?

Real resource use is a more important conversation to the species than deals made by great great great grandads a future estate try to grift on.

“Pull yourselves by your boot straps and pay off these notes the dead rich took out against old assets over valued by contemporary standards, future people!” Makes absolutely no sense.

I’m more of a bucolic life routines uplifted and assisted by automation type, than a Star Trek TNG live a life of technobabble.

Designer drugs that leave behind the same memory markers as the real thing seem possible given bio-electric therapies and growing understanding of psychedelics in emotional therapy.

VR goggles for everyone seem prosaic, corny af to me relative to such ideas. Traveling to every continent a huge waste.

turns0ut··on Wrong Again: 50 Years of Failed Eco-Pocalyptic Predictions
Humanoids went millions of years without airplanes.

There are plenty of industrialized endeavors that are enabling a financed minority to endanger the entire species. Trying to carve out exceptions that many will still be too poor to participate in is some self serving gibberish.

Accept figurative death as a necessity and disabuse ourselves of delusions of grandeur. As minds adjust we’ll find new things to be titillated by.

Don’t get me wrong; given politics and public agency, YOLO it is. Zero fucks. If the present is not going to concern itself with others future, why concern myself with the present? Why mold myself to expectations of indifferent moral relativists, implicit ageists, a perspective built on observation of their indifference to adjustments agency, virtue signaling rhetoric be damned.

Dedication to inaction or action that comes way too late in deference to equivocating, is nihilism about the state of the future. Let’s dispense with calling ourselves anything else.

turns0ut··on Wrong Again: 50 Years of Failed Eco-Pocalyptic Predictions
Quality of life has been impacted by changes in climate and we can measurably link human activity to it.

I don’t need doomsayers or keep calm carry onners while we collect data to generate directionless statistics chiming in anymore.

Experts have to accept their professional title does not make them smarter than others with the same quantitative ability.

Specific forecasts are wrong. That nothing is wrong is wrong too.

Chanting the ways in which someone else is a hypocrite is exhausting at this point.

“Do nothing until it’s an actual problem.” - people old enough to die before it’s a problem.

Ok we get it; you aren’t part of the solution.

turns0ut··on Severely deficient autobiographical memory (SDAM) in healthy adults (2015)
What you had for dinner probably falls under the “meaningless information.”

The study seems to call out ability to accurately recite one’s life story, vividly recalling subsets of childhood experiences in details, not knowing they had mac n cheez last Tuesday.

I grew up rural and was way less distracted by trendy and/or random people all around energy. I can clearly recite events and back it up with pictures my camera obsessed father took through the 80-90s. My autobiographical awareness seems intact.

Mainstream life then and now comes along with pressure to defer expressing ourselves and serve “higher purpose.” It’s not so shocking people do so and then remember nothing; there’s probably not that much to recall if one’s path was constrained to “set aside personal exploration to serve by getting busy work job, do job all week, sit on couch parasocially recharging through others emotional performances on TV.”

That’s a pretty fractal cognitive existence. That’s why I am not a fan of lifelong “career” culture. Adam Smith wrote years ago extreme division of labor would make humans incurious and stupider than animals; current political trends seem to back up the idea as everyone clings to keeping their tribal bubble intact rather than explore new models.

Don’t smash my cognitive fractal, bro!

turns0ut··on The case against CS master’s degrees
Things must be well engineered and they can be without calling a person an engineer.

IMO we should focus on defining what well engineered means in contexts where a thing must be engineered, not handing people a sigil of power to exploit.

turns0ut··on ML code generation vs. coding by hand: what we think programming will look like
ML is not a “black box”.

It’s formalized statistics translated to code by community.

Regex and grep are just as “black box magic” to those who read a blog post on how to scan some text files.

ML is statistics on arrays, whereas Unix tools are stats for a Unix system.

It’s the same abstraction at its core, new implementation.

turns0ut··on Inflation rose 9.1% in June, even more than expected
Given the Fed doesn’t even know what’s going on your gut is probably just as good a source: https://www.foxnews.com/media/fed-chairman-powell-admitting-...

There is this from Dalio who suggests money printer go brrr policies sank the Dutch and Brits: https://youtu.be/xguam0TKMw8

While all the fancy math is great for drawing geometric shapes, human intuition and basic arithmetic run the economy; human intuition for quantity has been evolving for millions of years whereas our fancy languages are only 5,000 years old (so says historians). We annotate our arithmetic operators differently for calculus and the rest of higher level math, but at the end of the day with only 13% of the adult public possessing an “advanced degree” most people make pretty basic arithmetical decisions.

Smart people used their education to get ahead but the rest of the world has caught up and caught on as <50% believe in higher powers now; elites are just people, not specials to be kowtowed by.

So what’s happened is again elites tried to form concrete agency habits into the masses (like religion did) but the masses agency does not concretely conform to rigid mathematical objects and the elites are now out of touch; either by stubbornness or age, they can’t handle they’re the ones losing ground all this time.

So they tinker with official math to keep us in line: https://www.nytimes.com/1997/02/27/business/job-insecurity-o...

So in the end economic policy was always politically motivated power consolidation for the elites, and the public, probably thanks to the meta awareness of our communities the internet provides, has caught onto the big picture game. Like Assange said; only the highly numerate will be able to see. I like to think it’s because such minds are not as swayed by cable group think.

So here we are saving like the Fed said and emotionally normalizing to a recession coming because that’s what we talk about, and so we’ll create a self fulfilling prophecy of it because like the number say, only 13% have an advanced degree; the masses will go along with Jerome Powell and the cable news channels telling them; stop spending, save, because a recession is coming. And stopping that simple arithmetic spending at scale will trigger a recession.

Subs will get cut to services. Services die off. What’s left is the new “real economy”, and off we go again. Conveniently not giving a toss about general public who got hurt while the elites look smart for getting us to believe they saw the future, and ignore that listening to them really just modified our economics behavior to make it all true.

turns0ut··on Ask HN: Are you cutting back on subscription services?
I have YouTube Premium and Apple Music.

I only use YT for STEM and live music.

I wonder if media talking about recession and now seeing questions like this is intentional; get people to cut their spending, save, actually causing a recession, because people listened to the media and Fed.

Asset prices come down given less activity in the market. Average person can’t save much as it, and the rich buy up cheaper assets.

In no way do I see the media and Fed talking about these things as indicative of their ability to see the future. It’s people using their podium and claim of power to trigger behavioral modification.

They really do not want to raise wages: https://www.marketplace.org/2022/01/26/the-statistic-fed-cha...

turns0ut··on Heathrow tells airlines to stop selling additional flights until September
Growing worker insecurity has been a policy since Reagan, I’d argue. They were much more honest about it back in the day[1]. Now it’s just how society works to all the younger folk.

They want to hand their kids the keys via no inheritance tax and recreate a top down monarchy.

This is the problem with a JIT economy in general.

They want to shave a lot of pennies for themselves by playing musical chairs with our agency.

turns0ut··on Admit It, Squirrels Are Just Tree Rats
They’re like every other media outlet; trying to trigger people into having an opinion that does not matter, because the public having opinions that matter would mean a low effort blogger has to get a job.
