tudelo··on Ask HN: What would you do every day, assuming you didn't need to work?
Play too many video games. If my income is the same as it is now, spend too much money on clothes and going out. Do some programming but probably not as much, and only on things I am interested in, such as open source game clients. I currently read a lot (though not traditional books usually, but I have done a lot of that in the past) so I would probably read more. Oh, and waste time on hackernews/stackexchange/reddit.

I can see where you are heading with this, and we probably do not agree, but I know you have spent more time thinking about this than I have so I will defer on core values. Still, it is an important topic that I should probably spend more time on. But I really don't see how in the modern USA (Where most of FB/HN is) you could make it through life without spending much of it making others more money than you are getting paid yourself. Further, I really don't see how getting paid 250k and producing a value higher than that is such a bad thing in practice. And, another important thing I think to add to the conversation is that it is rather difficult to ascertain what "value" an individual SWE has produced. There are also a non-zero ammount of SWE's that produce less value than they are paid for. Are they immoral for showing up to the job?

Honestly, what is so evil about your work making someone else rich? What is your point here?
tudelo··on Building Inclusive AI at Facebook
"Facebook can try as hard as they want, but their inherent bias against minorities will still show through."

Can you further explain how to create a system that shows no bias (positive or negative) towards any minority group? Is it as simple as don't ever categorize?

Edit: I think this poster is a troll.

The problem with that statement is you could replace Facebook with N other companies and still say nothing of value.
tudelo··on Ask HN: What is/was your parent's net worth at retirement?
Do you plan on taking care of them when they can no longer work?
tudelo··on Teen Suicide Spiked After Debut Of Netflix's '13 Reasons Why,' Study Says
If you played xbox or something similar 10 years ago I think you would agree. Nonetheless, I am happy to be wrong in this situation. YMMV

The Internet has definitely increased the proliferation of such behavior.
tudelo··on Ask HN: What questions would you ask someone to assess their maturity?
I only ever really ask interviewers about what they work on and their general day to day. What more is there to really ask?

Or do you mean, if the tables were turned, what would you ask?

tudelo··on Ask HN: Sources of remote dev work with minimal human interaction?
Actually I don't entirely agree. There are many actually interesting government projects that may not pay great but will certainly impress interviewers who just implement button x on app y. It's not as hard to move out as you would think.
tudelo··on Ask HN: Why is Facebook not having a harder time hiring?
They pay 250k for someone with 2yoe. And have benefits better than 99 percent of companies (likely more than 99 percent honestly).

Edit:

And, a properly defined career ladder. Competitive stock refreshers and bonuses. Varied projects.

tudelo··on Ask HN: How do you learn a programming language (e.g. Rust) from a book?
I will add... these books can often be useful as a reference more so than a strict learning guide. Most technical books seem to be more useful in that way.
tudelo··on Ask HN: I lost my ability to focus for hours on coding. How to regain?
I can say medication has done wonders for my professional life and has made me much happier overall. For anyone on the fence about trying medication, I would say it is certainly worth it.
tudelo··on Post-surgical deaths in Scotland drop by a third, attributed to a checklist
I could see that being problematic.
tudelo··on Post-surgical deaths in Scotland drop by a third, attributed to a checklist
Man, if I was travelling to a different country and needed a passport AND forgot my passport, then I would agree with you. I guess my life is not so hectic that I don't forget the absolute necessities (you can't fly without that or you can die without that).
tudelo··on Post-surgical deaths in Scotland drop by a third, attributed to a checklist
A 100 item checklist?

I just throw some stuff in a bag and worry less. Never fails. If I forget something it probably was not that important and I can just buy it at the airport / when I land.

tudelo··on Congress Is About to Ban the US Government from Offering Free Online Tax Filing
I used CreditKarma and it took 10-15 minutes... afaik they didn't charge a fee either. This is the second year I have used them. I would prefer a Government solution if it was good, but there are plenty of very low cost/free alternatives out there already so oh well.
tudelo··on Manipulating the YouTube Algorithm [video]
And further, even if he is attempting to "manipluate the algorithm" he really is just trying to maximize his views for his content, which is much higher quality content than the average youtube video.
tudelo··on Show HN: 300k lines of Java UI code running native in browser at desktop speed
What is your opinion on the compile time though? No matter how I feel about what it actually can do I just can NOT get over the compile time.
tudelo··on Agile Lite: Agile without all the burnout
I don't even think it's a good rule because if something critical/high priority comes up it could be because of planning or it could be because of multiple external forces and or a bug.

Maybe it's a good general workflow but as a hard rule it seems rather silly... but I would love to work somewhere where there wasn't a flipflop on priorities every week or so :)

Barely resemble the real thing?

Come on... I know you might not like them, but I don't see how they "barely resemble the real thing."

tudelo··on Ask HN: If you’ve recently left SF, where and why did you move?
Did you have a pay adjustment?
tudelo··on Ask HN: What to do when your side-project takes off?
I don't think OP is asking so that they can get hyper growth, they are just curious about peoples experiences.

If you were to say how much you get paid, you would in general say you make x an hour. You wouldn't say "Well, after taxes, rent, food, gas, insurance, etc, I make x-y an hour."
tudelo··on Ask HN: Articles like Sam Altman's startup playbook?
Never saw this, thanks for the link. I found http://blakemasters.com/post/24578683805/peter-thiels-cs183-... to be written extremely well.
