tudelo··on Ask HN: Decade-long plan to FIRE starting just under age 40?
Thanks for this answer, I really appreciate it.
tudelo··on Ask HN: Decade-long plan to FIRE starting just under age 40?
Do you think most people could really do a 2 year on - 1 year off thing? To me that sounds great -- I can definitely save a year of expenses every 2 years... but I wonder what job prospects would be, or other adverse affects.
tudelo··on Me and ADHD
I have heard it can be bad for oral health due to dehydration. Not sure how much of that ends up being a feeling versus physically needing water, and how dehydration affects oral health, or exactly how I would connect all of the dots there (or if I even should attempt it), but it seems reasonable.
tudelo··on Me and ADHD
I'm not gonna lie, OP seemed pretty reasonable here. Why do you feel so angry about his comments? They seemed to come from a place of curiosity and understanding...
tudelo··on Facebook senior software engineer interview
Not sure the source of downvotes, what you are saying seems true. From my experience they will generally not even interview a new grad who has experience for E3 jobs with an internal referal.
tudelo··on Ask HN: Why HN Doesn't Have Tags?
IMO the system is lacking features intentionally. There are definitely sites which sort of re-skin hackernews to serve whatever preference they have (for example, to show the top post on each day, and that's it.) I imagine you could make your own tagger news if you wanted to. Not sure of what HN's policy is regardthing that though.
tudelo··on Bitcoin breaks above $20k
What do you notice? Not sure what you are trying to allude to.
tudelo··on Ask HN: How to Get into Google?
+++. Went to a state University. Got offers from some FAANG's after 2 years-ish of full time work at a smaller company.

My route: Linkedin. Just setting my profile to "open to work" or whatever it is has worked in landing me some interviews.

After you get an interview (completely luck based) you need to study leetcode. IMO if you can do 200 in 1-2 months focusing heavily on medium, you will be prepared. At that point you need to ace your onsite interview by doing very well in 4/5 or so of the sessions (slightly luck based). Then you wait forever until google decides to finally give you an offer :)

tudelo··on Examples of games developed by a single developer?
Seconding this. Great game. My favorite part is the xp modifier you get from really long kill streaks, something that exists in many games (like diablo) but really adds a fun twist to the grindy combat.
tudelo··on Airbnb’s Stunning IPO
To be fair... you can stay at an airbnb and still be completely distanced from the owner of said airbnb. Yeah, you have to travel, but for many this is also possible without any close contact.
tudelo··on Ask HN: Losing all interest in programming, what now?
I am currently at a high paying job... This is my plan but I don't know if I can make it. It feels like such a privileged position but I see and hear of sudden tragedies and wonder, is this really something I am comfortable doing if my last day is tomorrow? I guess I wish we could have the best of both worlds -- freedom to pursue what is interesting and financial stability. It seems possible, but difficult...
tudelo··on Billionaires Build
I agree, but in a distributed world I wonder how we could ever end up enforcing something like that in a positive way. Like, if we add some inheritance tax that ends up being prohibitively large, at some point the amount of money these people have seems to make it impossible to enforce.
tudelo··on Ask HN: How to buy shares pre-IPO?
If you can sustain that income for 10 years (and lets assume, some moderate growth in income, but even at a static 200k) there is a good chance that you don't have to work another day in your life that you don't want to. To me, that is pretty rich.
tudelo··on The Prestige Trap: finance, big tech, and consulting
I personally would consider top 5 percent of any task to be the low bar of proficiency, so even that doesn't seem super impressive to me. But damn, the jobs pay well and wlb can be great (or terrible). I guess the weird part is that the process of getting hired is so different than the day to day work.
tudelo··on The Prestige Trap: finance, big tech, and consulting
For the qualities that you consider a negative, some may consider it a positive.
tudelo··on The Prestige Trap: finance, big tech, and consulting
Yeah, that's something that I have been a bit confused on too. People talk about how hard it is and the "prestige", but there are 20k+ other engineers who did the same thing (at your company alone!). It's really not all that impressive.
tudelo··on macOS unable to open any non-Apple application
My condolences friend. Next time, be more lazy :)
tudelo··on Stripe migrates Stripe Subscriptions users to more expensive Stripe Billing
Yeah but isn't that just the way of the world? Processes can become simpler but at a certain point the complexity of the process is inherent and it would benefit you to employ an expert (individual or entity). You can build a house yourself, with your own hands, but why? I'm not an expert on the whole domain of payment processing but it seems to me there is a lot of non trivial problems inherent with taking payments. I guess if you are hedging on a different system of holding and transferring money there may be a way to get rid of the middleman. What do you propose?
tudelo··on Ask HN: What vitamins and legal nootropics take every day
Just adding that I really don't find nicotine all that addictive either. I find other common drugs extremely addicting and hard to stop in comparison (namely: caffiene). my naive opinion is that smoking ends up more addictive due to the habitual nature versus the nicotine content of cigarettes.
tudelo··on Ask HN: If you were to build a new search engine. What would be your plan?
Any idea of user interest here?
tudelo··on AWS and their billions in IPv4 addresses
> You cannot use IPv4 100% efficiently.

Can you expand on this a bit? I'm not a networking guru but it's my understanding that an IP address is an IP address, how could it be used more or less efficient?

tudelo··on Report on Investigation of Twitter’s July 15, 2020 Cybersecurity Incident
Can you expand on why it's sad? As someone who doesn't have a twitter account or participate much in social networking sites, it still seems like a true statement at face value for a large part of the population.
tudelo··on Ask HN: I'm surrounded by passive people, I'm getting depressed
> Only 2% of people (at best) are leaders/initiators.

Source for this claim? Just a personal feeling?

tudelo··on Archive of tech interview questions of Google, Amazon, FB, Samsung and et al.
On the other hand, some of the questions can be rather interesting to solve. I also notice there are just a few patterns/techniques that you can use to solve them so the questions themselves do not seem all that important.
tudelo··on Google to buy 6.6% stake in ADT in home security push
As long as it updates when I'm leaving too, instant buy
tudelo··on US homebuilding surges as coronavirus sparks flight to suburbs, rural areas
Yeah, especially for the more senior folks who can easily afford to build or buy a house and also have the advantage of being able to ensure they can work remotely for the near to medium future (especially with some companies shifting to remote for higher level IC's and some shifting to remote first entirely).
tudelo··on Ask HN: How replaceable are developers on a MERN stack?
I think it's kind of strange that OP's focus on the framework as the way to determine how replaceable people are. I think unless required, most people have basic familiarity with a framework, and are likely more familiar with the languages that make up said framework. Any Javascript framework or stack (outside of something obscure) is easy to learn (read: doesn't take any real special skill) especially if there is an existing codebase that developers can use to learn from...
tudelo··on Kraftwerk played live with an astronaut on the ISS (2018)
Just wondering, when you think _cheap_, what does that mean? 5 digits? 6 digits?
tudelo··on Ask HN: How to manage burnout / jadedness and job hunt?
"It's impossible to get the stink of desperation off and causes me to interview very poorly."

followed by

"I have been abused and neglected for so long that I'm unable to let go of my victim complex. Please help.

If you need a remote web developer with 10+yrs of PHP / Node experience please DM me"

is kinda rough...

It seems like you may be your own worse enemy here. You usually don't need portfolio pieces to find a new job. You have 10 years of experience. I can't speak to your mental health, and I wish you the best on that. However, appearing desperate in a job interview is in general a red flag (and you know this).

Just keep on applying and interviewing. Stop brooding over the things your coworkers are doing wrong (guess what: they probably can say the same about you). You don't need to give specifics about where you work so much, you can "make things up" (just don't lie about your abilities). Also, if you don't have savings for extended job breaks, that sounds like something you should start on because a job is not worth ruining your life over.

Good luck :(

Yeah... I bet that would make for some really exciting gameplay :D
