ttraub··on Huawei heats up the battle for internet in Canada's north
Don't you mean "appropriate"? If global climate is heating up, people will naturally move northwards in Canada and Siberia to take advantage of newly fertile farmland and moderate temps.
ttraub··on Gombe Chimpanzee War
Yes, lots of great clips about lion behavior from BBC and NatGeo on youtube, as well as (mostly nonviolent) scenes captured by safari leaders like Rob the Ranger.

Lions are incredibly savage toward "the other"; no intra-species solidarity seems to exist, though there are incidents of strangers forming coalitions even though they didn't grow up together.

Chimps increasingly are being reported to be somewhat violent and are known to commit murder; cannibalism and rape also are not uncommon.

It's not clear, whether this behavior is continuous throughout their history as a species, or has come to be more common because of the pressure of human encroachment and the reduction in their population. At one time there were millions of chimpanzees in Africa, and today there are maybe 300,000 left in the wild.

ttraub··on Clarifying ProtonMail and Huawei
Media outlets certainly do that, but can't product makers sue them for damages, when they publish false information that can tank a stock or kill a company's sales?
ttraub··on Sunsetting Python 2
Me three! It happens all too often that an example Python script fails in one, then succeeds in the other. I'm also a casual Python user, trying to ramp up because of its obvious popularity and utility. I wish that the basic syntactical changes could have been designed to be more backward-compatible. But, eventually I suppose, python2 will just be a footnote in history.
ttraub··on How to learn D3.js
My mind was just blown because of D3.js, and now you're hitting me with DC.js? Mercy!!! (joke)

D3 is stunning. I've been looking for a nice visualization framework for some internal reports, and this (D3 or I guess DC) looks like a great tool to add some spice to boring charts.

Javascript frameworks are almost overwhelming in the numbers and functionality now widely available. If only there were more hours in a day to spend learning them.

ttraub··on Google search results in Google Sheets or Excel
A more accurate title would be "How to get Google search results in Google Sheets or MS Excel" as per the original article (corrected for capitalization). "inside sheets" sounds dangerously close to "between the sheets".
ttraub··on Whatever happened to Six Sigma?
So says a friend of mine who has written two books on Six Sigma and for a few years was consulting full time in QC. He told me: "At its core, Six Sigma is a set of very old, well established tools encased in a slick marketing shell. There is nothing revolutionary. Inevitably, Six Sigma fades away and something new will take its place, using the same old tools."
ttraub··on Person carrying bacteria resistant to antibiotics of last resort found in U.S.
The implants would likely be pretty cheap -- a one time purchase of an RFID sensor encased in glass or similar non-immunogenic coating. RFID tags are on the order of a few cents. Probably this type of sophisticated sensor is going to be more like a few dollars in quantity.

The reader and the software are going to be a few hundred dollars or maybe a couple thousand. But it's a one time investment, plus ongoing implants as the herd changes over time.

I suspect the main selling point is going to be the one-time capital investment aspects and the fact that antibiotics are being painted as an undesirable additive in meat and dairy. When the general public starts to dislike a substance, suppliers scramble to distinguish their products, e.g. "No added growth hormones" and the like.

ttraub··on Person carrying bacteria resistant to antibiotics of last resort found in U.S.
This sounds like an "Internet of things" opportunity: an implant that monitors an animal's temperature, antibody levels etc. Then they could target only the animals with telltale symptoms.
ttraub··on [dead]
It was a foregone conclusion that he would win the nomination after Cruz quit, but it's still interesting that it happened before the last big primaries e.g. California. Indeed this may affect turnout in the California primaries: GOP down, Dems up. The Dems may be charged up a bit to rally behind the leading candidate to counter Trump. But, we'll see next week.
ttraub··on Black Market Ride-Sharing Increases in Austin
You said "the citizens" when in fact it was less than 20% of the voters. Technically you are correct, but really, this vote was hardly representative of the citizenry.

Then there's the whole vague wording thing as explained above. For all we know, half of the voters didn't understand the ballot question. I'm not so sure I would have voted correctly either. What a fiasco.

ttraub··on Black Market Ride-Sharing Increases in Austin
Actually, we're not that far off from being chipped voluntarily. That's how it will start. "Let us chip you, and you won't need your badge to get through the front entrance anymore; and we'll give you a $50/week bonus."

In an era when the government has access to our cell phone data via easily obtained FISA court permission, we're already a good chunk of the way there.

ttraub··on TSA's Head of Security 'Removed' from Office
Eliminate the TSA and give the $8B to Nasa. A much better investment.
ttraub··on TSA's Head of Security 'Removed' from Office
Here's what the Tea party website has to say:

http://teaparty.org/tsa-misconduct-highest-levels-160893/

There are many other articles on conservative channels ripping the TSA as a big government boondoggle.

ttraub··on How China is super-sizing science
China is accomplishing great things in science; very impressive list of projects.

By contrast, the U.S. seems to ceding its former leadership role. We don't even have a manned space program anymore. Maybe some day, Orion will be completed. But in the meantime, NASA is operating on a shoestring budget compared to a few decades ago.

ttraub··on Lawmakers grill Uber, Lyft reps over fingerprinting pushback
Are Uber/Lyft passengers in such grave danger that these regulations are necessary, or is this simply a way to "taxi-fy" the ride shares and thus satisfy the traditional cab companies?
