ttmb··on Clubhouse Is a Cargo Cult
> Everyone was on clubhouse.

Anecdatapoint: I don't recall hearing anyone talk about Clubhouse - or at least not in enough detail that it actually stuck with me what it was - before this post.

I may live under a small rock, but others must be under here with me. Some app? Okay, moving on. Sometimes the network effect is so focused that the in-network and the out-network can't perceive each other.

ttmb··on Barry Diller: The movie business as before is finished and will never come back
> Here are the top ten box office films of 2020

But see, 2020 was an aberration. You have to look at 2019.

Sequel, remake, sequel, sequel, comic, sequel, sequel/comic, remake, comic, sequel/remake,

Oh. Oh no. Let's keep going for top 20, yeah?

Sequel/remake, ORIGINAL, sequel, sequel, sequel, sequel, video game, ORIGINAL, comic, comic. (from boxofficemojo)

2 in the top 20.

Let's keep going?

ORIGINAL, remake, sequel-ish? sequel, sequel, (US) remake, ORIGINAL, sequel, ORIGINAL, remake, tv-to-film, ORIGINAL, comic, ORIGINAL, sequel, sequel, sequel, ORIGINAL, sequel, sequel, ...

Let's stop there, but don't assume for a second that all the remakes and sequels are top-loaded - they may dominate the top of the chart but they go pretty far down it too.

ttmb··on Change.org workers form a union
Working conditions... you mean the sort of things that unions tend to care about?
ttmb··on Change.org workers form a union
If you read the article,

> Poché, [...] lives in Manhattan [...] earning just under $50,000 a year.

That doesn't seem like "extremely well compensated"

ttmb··on Instagram, Twitter blame glitches for deleting Palestinian posts
The most likely explanation is that coordinated mass reporting of these posts is triggering removal algorithms.

In that sense, the "glitch" is that the removal algorithms are susceptible to being gamed.

ttmb··on Elon Musk moves to Texas
Most new car purchases do come from dealer stock.

Around 15% are factory-ordered - typically luxury brands. An additional 20-25% are sourced from other dealer inventory, or an upcoming shipment that is already specced and on the way. The rest are on the lot and ready to go with the buyer. Dealer lots are huge in most of the country. Endless seas of near identical cars with minor variations in options and colors.

ttmb··on Uber sells self-driving unit in deal that will push Aurora’s valuation to $10B
Prior to this deal, Uber had a couple of billion (at the value of this deal) in a self driving car company named ATG. After this deal, they have a couple of billion in a self driving car company named Aurora.
ttmb··on Update to Git changes the default of init.defaultBranch to main
What is the principle of standing ground in and of itself? Standing ground for a good reason, yes, but without a good reason, what is the virtue of just standing?
ttmb··on Update to Git changes the default of init.defaultBranch to main
The change doesn't make my life worse in the slightest, and may improve someone else's mental health. No reason for me to be against it at all.
ttmb··on Looking for Voter Fraud (In Old Elections) with Data Visualization
> "I have not yet had the benefit of reviewing the underlying proceedings..."

Ah, vloggers. Same desperate need to fill airtime as the 24-hour news channels, with even less resources for actual journalism.

ttmb··on Looking for Voter Fraud (In Old Elections) with Data Visualization
I believe there was one where GOP poll watchers were barred from entry - because there were already GOP poll watchers in the room and the room was at capacity.
ttmb··on Looking for Voter Fraud (In Old Elections) with Data Visualization
> these unsolicited mail in ballots and the extended deadlines which we've never had before in this country.

Many states added new procedures like these to this election, but I don't believe any state added procedures that weren't already used in one or more other states.

ttmb··on Car seats as contraception
There's a whole category of seats not covered by your links. Large seats that are forwards/backwards switchable so they last a few years. The seats are tethered to the safety latches, which although they are an "easy click" (two) can be quite tricky depending on the car and the tolerances involved. If the seat is facing forwards, it is also tethered to the sash belt, which I believe is the cause of "skinned knuckles" reference.

I 100% empathize with the person you replied to, and found your comment to be a bit dismissive in the "well I don't have a problem" fashion.

ttmb··on Australia to make Facebook, Google pay for news
The recency bias is painful. If you read a recent article and want more information on some background from the story, the results are mostly a flood of more articles on the recent story, with no new info. Your best bet is to find one of the new articles that actually cited and linked to some older work.
ttmb··on U.S. prosecutors seek 27 months imprisonment for former Uber self-driving head
So let's say I did the same thing. I don't have any money, so there is no meaningful financial punishment that can be applied to me. In which case, we'll need an alternate punishment, ie - jail.

In which case we've just set up a punishment system where poor people go to jail and rich people don't.

ttmb··on Lego Helicopter Kit Cancelled 10 Days Before Release
The company drew this line in 2010 - their own words, but paraphrasing their internal policy:

> The basic aim is to avoid realistic weapons and military equipment that children may recognize from hot spots around the world

The Osprey unequivocally is captured by the above standard.

ttmb··on Lego Helicopter Kit Cancelled 10 Days Before Release
Nothing is banned. This is a longstanding LEGO company policy that they were sort of stretching, until consumers called them out on it.
ttmb··on Amazon in advanced talks to buy Zoox
Amazon can use this technology entirely in-house.
ttmb··on Nest Cam status lights can no longer be turned off for privacy
The camera inside my building is not for deterrence - the burglar is already inside at this point and will not be deterred. Either way, as you note, my stuff is gone. If their attention is drawn to an internal security camera by a light, then they may disable it or otherwise take extra steps to conceal themselves or avoid the camera. If they do not notice the camera, I may get better/more footage for identification purposes.
ttmb··on Julian Assange arrested in London
This is hardly the rational discussion you claimed to be starting.
ttmb··on Article 13 Is Back On: Worse, Not Better
Right. So, Article 13 apparently requires prescreening material. That's specifically why people are up in arms.

Everyone is pretty much on board with the necessity for providers to take down content in response to infringement reports, albeit with a side argument about how current implementations of this favour big money over small creators.

ttmb··on Article 13 Is Back On: Worse, Not Better
> You gave instagram a license to share your content.

No, in the scenario you're responding to, someone sent you a photo that is not and has never been on Instagram. Instagram is now required by law to prevent you from uploading it, because you are not the copyright owner of the image. How does that make sense?

ttmb··on I Nearly Lost All of My Data
There really isn't a story here, Kev. You blew a power supply on your Synology. You even said it yourself: "maybe this is a problem with the enclosures and the disks are fine".

If you'd put your disks into a replacement Synology unit, you would have been back online - config, data, and all - within a few minutes.

ttmb··on Source: Google Allo will be officially shut down soon
In this context, an earnest product could be a messaging product that aimed to solve a problem with other existing products and had a coherent story explaining this.

Allo from the outside seemed to solve no problem other than "people are using messaging platforms that aren't ours".

ttmb··on Transitioning Google Cloud leadership after three great years
I think this was downvoted because it's not really the topic at hand.
ttmb··on Transitioning Google Cloud leadership after three great years
YMMV widely. It's not at all uncommon to have large software and infrastructure deals signed by CTOs and Business Analyst type people based on advertised product features and compliance certifications, without ever speaking to architects, engineers and implementors about technology fit, compatibility, etc.
ttmb··on How to Keep Your Job as Your Company Grows
From the title, I didn't know which direction the post was going to go in.

This one: grow with your job title. Alternate version: how to keep doing the same tasks you enjoy and not be forced into a different (likely managerial) role.

ttmb··on Proposed new tag: IMG (1993)
They would be different URIs. file://10.1.1.10/files/example.xlsx - remote vs file:///10.1.1.10/files/example.xlsx - local
ttmb··on Why we’re changing Flickr free accounts
Flickr is no longer owned by Verizon or the remnants of Yahoo.
ttmb··on Even janitors have noncompetes now
Something like this reversal is actually the law in some countries. An employer cannot hire someone else for your position for some period of time if they "lay you off", as distinct from firing you.
