tthayer··on Most drivers who own cars with built-in GPS systems use phones for directions
The car manufacturers just contract it out to companies like Johnson Controls, who make the system in my Mazda. It's running embedded linux and the interface is a bunch of javascript files. One of the bigger problems I see with this system is that Johnson Controls just doesn't give a shit about maintaining an old system unless a safety issue is presented. They're better off selling improved systems for use in newer model cars as a sales tactic. Android Auto/Apple carplay pretty much remove the ALWAYSBEIMPROVING component. Johnson Controls could pretty much just sell the same head unit/LCD combo for the next 10 years and no one would notice.

tthayer··on P4: a high-level language for programming protocol-independent packet processors
The company I work at has Perforce tied to a homegrown code review tool that really makes it painful to use and in reality that's my main gripe with having to use it.
tthayer··on Ever wondered how many open FTP servers there are?
@Home was wide open around 1999ish. My friend would send random (if you can call goatse.cx random) print jobs to various open SMB printer shares. Ah, to be young again.
tthayer··on P4: a high-level language for programming protocol-independent packet processors
I thought 'perforce' when I saw the headline. Perforce is something I'm stuck with at my current job, unfortunately.
tthayer··on BMW Plans Board Shakeup, Change in Electric Cars Strategy
As a counter point, buying any 12-year old car (2002 model year would have been built in 2001ish) comes with it's own set of caveats. Also, there is more than enough information out there on common issues with Mk4 Volkswagen's of era to help inform your buying decision. I'm definitely not defending the car, as I owned a 2001 Jetta for a while and it wasn't the best.

tthayer··on Tesla Lining Up Attack on Auto Industry Lobbying
It's a fine balance between efficiency, emissions, and safety. Cars in the US tend to be heavier by a few hundred pounds compared to the euro versions due to various safety requirements and the california emissions standards tend to set the pace for the rest of the country. If you want your car to meet 50-state approval you aim for Cali's standards and take the efficiency hit.
tthayer··on My Brother's Keeper
Powerful stuff. I appreciate the parts that talk about the damage AA-based programs have done for the cause of recovery too. Medication and therapy can be very helpful when used in conjunction with effective recovery programs, a view advocated by SMART Recovery (http://www.smartrecovery.org).
tthayer··on Unix Toolbox
This is pretty great. Would be cool to get a filtered list based on the OS you were using.
tthayer··on Vim: Takeaways from One Year of Typing
The main problem I have with suggesting starting with MacVim is that using it doesn't translate well when you're SSH'd into another system running a different OS. I've been using Vim for a while (and now neovim) and recently tried out MacVim and it just didn't make any sense to me. The menus are totally non-intuitive if you're used to doing everything from the keyboard. Conversely, I wouldn't expect someone who started by using MacVim to be comfortable with the keyboard shortcuts either.

Opening up a virgin vim session on a new system kind of makes you realize how much you'll miss out on if you don't know about :set number, :set wrap, :set syntax <whatever>.

tthayer··on Ask HN: Best new or modern languange for game dev?
I'd venture to say "The one you know best". If you find yourself struggling to do something in the language of your choice, see how others are accomplishing it and then decide.

tthayer··on Tesla’s Model S Gets “Ludicrous” Mode, Will Do 0-60 in 2.8 Seconds
It looks like OTA updates will be available in the future, but who knows if 'older' models will get that feature.
tthayer··on Tesla’s Model S Gets “Ludicrous” Mode, Will Do 0-60 in 2.8 Seconds
Thanks for pointing me to that. I had no idea that stuff existed!
tthayer··on Tesla’s Model S Gets “Ludicrous” Mode, Will Do 0-60 in 2.8 Seconds
Don't get me wrong, it isn't enough to make me hate the rest of the car. It drives great. About the only thing I use the infotainment system for is the neat fuel consumption statistics screen.
tthayer··on Tesla’s Model S Gets “Ludicrous” Mode, Will Do 0-60 in 2.8 Seconds
I regularly get 40+ MPG(US) on road trips in this little car. The info system being stupid is way overshadowed by how nice it is to drive, given the price. It's still a loud econobox with paper-thin sheet metal, but it drives a lot better than I expected.
tthayer··on Tesla’s Model S Gets “Ludicrous” Mode, Will Do 0-60 in 2.8 Seconds
Agreed. The 2015 Mazda3 we just bought has a horrible info/nav system that crashes and frequently stops responding. I'm guessing the actual chance of it ever being fixed at 0%. Tesla's get an automatic OTA update that would fix that kind of thing and it wouldn't be something you'd have to 'deal' with for the rest of your ownership of the vehicle.

Michael Fassbender is very good at completely occupying the role, so maybe it won't matter too much. Seth Rogan as Woz though? I dunno.
tthayer··on About the OS X Yosemite v10.10.4 Update
The instant hotspot thing stopped behaving for me and the fix has been to click on the bluetooth menu and mouse over the phone connection over and over. I have no idea why this works or if it even does anything, but so far I've had no problem connecting when I do it and when I don't it times out.
tthayer··on Google Play Music – free, ad-supported radio
This varies quite a bit, but I've noticed it a lot more with music that uses studio compression to get more 'volume' than with music mastered for clarity.
tthayer··on Why You Have to Wear a Seat Belt, but Can Drive a Motorcycle
They can use an array of sensors in the seat and passenger compartment. My car isn't terribly smart so if I leave my bag in the passenger seat it will chime at me incessantly until I shove the bag onto the floor. Cars already use a lot of this kind of information when making decisions around airbag deployment. I was in a frontal accident last year that didn't trigger any airbags because I was firmly belted in and moving at low speed.
tthayer··on Ask HN: New job is having me switch from Linux to Mac – how do I cope?
Regarding window management: I use an excellent little free app called ShiftIt (https://github.com/fikovnik/ShiftIt) that makes window management way better. Uses maybe 20MB of RAM and plays nice with multiple displays.
tthayer··on Why Baidu Has Been Hijacked to Attack GitHub
