tsywke44··on Can progressives be convinced that genetics matters?
Kids are savant at learning ”muscle memory skills”.

But there is a reason 2nd graders dont do book reviews of classic literature. Even though they can absolutely read the complex words out loud on autopilot any day of the week.

tsywke44··on The chip shortage keeps getting worse – why can't we just make more?
Nope, not just PCs, just electronics in general.

The pandemic allowed tens of millions of well-off western office workers to move out of tiny urban flats into more spacious housing. While having to spend a lot of time in their new homes, which was previously in ”public” places (eg restaurants, bars, what have you)

Now, what to do with all that space? A giant tv, washer and dryer, a nice stereo set, new induction stove, the list goes on and on…

PC demand also increased obviously, but probably bitcoin miners caused the most demand for PC hardware components

tsywke44··on If software engineering is in demand, why is it so hard to get a job?
Why would any company spend 2 years to train a junior, only for that junior to jump ship?

Oh and it's not that easy to even find a "trainable" junior. Even if you have a fairly strict hiring process, at least 1/3rds of the people coming out of the edication system will be draft busts if using sports terms

tsywke44··on How did so many Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup players miss such an obvious bug?
That actually sounds nice. Compared to most other "competitive” games, where there is an optimal meta way of playing it, and doing anything else is basically trolling and instant loss
tsywke44··on The UK’s delta surge is collapsing
If 70% of your population is vaccinated, it doesnt mean the virus spreads 70% slower.

It instead means that there are 20 million potential virus hosts in the UK instead of 67m. Way more than the population of lots of EU countries.

tsywke44··on The UK’s delta surge is collapsing
Also lots of previously vaccinated people were exposed, but didn’t get infected.

Doesn’t mean their immune system did nothing though. I’d wager a lot of UK population basically got an ”organic 3rd vaccine dose”. My prediction is they have probably the highest immunity rates in the world atm

tsywke44··on The UK’s delta surge is collapsing
Night clubs opened and were PACKED, a lot of young people were unvaccinated, causing hundreds of superspreader events every night for a few weeks.

The % of total population who actually visits nightclubs is pretty low, so it took like a monh for this segment to hit herd immunity basically

tsywke44··on My rant about React
”I feel like 9 out of 10 job ads for a frontend developer mention React.”

Those jobs are not for developing webSITES. They are for web APPLICATIONS, which need a lot more developer manpower than just basic sites. So of course the demand will be higher

Like 90% of random static business websites nowadays are made with wordpress. That’s where the webSITE development happens.

Why? Because the client needs to easily host it. Because the client wants to update the text without needing to know HTML. No need to reinvent the wheel for every single ”we sell cars” website

tsywke44··on London’s Crossrail Is a $21B Test of Virtual Modeling (2016)
Who cares? These are rail lines which will be used for centuries. Trust me, nobody will even remember a few years of delays.
tsywke44··on Ask HN: Why is YouTube adding “&pp=sAQA” to video URLs?
Congrats, you’re in the 0.0001% of youtube users who actually does that
tsywke44··on Android has won the phone world war
Lol. A large amount of these Android devices are just $50 bare minimum specs phones being sold in third world countries, where the only thing they are used for is Whatsapp messaging.

Basically I would not even count this as a smartphone usage. More like the 2020s version of traditional dumbphones.

If you develop Android software you will get flat zero installs from the billions of this type of users.

tsywke44··on Lost world revealed by human, Neanderthal relics washed up on North Sea beaches
Yep. It's hard to wrap your head across the fact just how small human populations used to be, and how slowly things changed. For the vast majority of our species history, people in tint populations lived the exact same way for thousands of years without any change or technological progress.

Contrast it to the present. A random city has millions of inhabitants and your entire life often changes overnight.

tsywke44··on Catholic priest quits after “anonymized” data revealed alleged use of Grindr
It's so interesting. There's a huge amount of privacy-related online REEEing about irrelevant issues, such as anonymized error telemetry in open source software.

Yet when mobile phone carriers sell your real-time location data to random entities, it seems nobody gives a damn.

tsywke44··on Majority of Covid misinformation came from 12 people, report finds
I'm pretty sure the "5G tracking microchips in bloodstream from vaccine" one originated from a 2015 James Bond movie (Spectre)

It does seem a lot of the conspiracy people have this "I'm an action movie main character" -syndrome going on, which is fitting

tsywke44··on We replaced rental brokers with software and filled 200 vacant apartments
This is the classic pet vs cattle problem. It isn't aimed at the person who is renting their precious second apartment.

It's for investors with 50+ rentals where every unit is simply a number in a spreadsheet.
