tswartz··on What Google Learned from Its Quest to Build the Perfect Team
Here is a high-level summary...

After studying over 180 google teams they didn't find any evidence that the composition of the teams mattered (i.e. friends outside of work, male/female, introverts, extroverts, intelligence). Instead what they focused on were the “group norms” or unwritten rules of how the groups interacted with each other. There were two norms that were most important to a successful group.

1) Members spoke in roughly the same proportion, what the researchers call, ‘‘equality in distribution of conversational turn-taking.’’

2) Members all had “average social sensitivity”. They could understand how other team members felt based on non-verbal queues. The underperforming teams had low sensitivity amongst the team members.

tswartz··on Forget Millennials–Why You Should Hire Someone Over 55
This article has some interesting stats.

The last sentence of this excerpt is bizarrely added on.

>While some employers worry that older workers aren’t adept in tech tools or platforms, that’s more related to the individual than the age, Griffin says. She recently told a millennial job candidate to update his LinkedIn profile.

cool! good luck. let me know what it is when it launches. I'm in the market for a good iOS sdk. @tylerswartz
tswartz··on 20 lines of code that beat A/B testing (2012)
If you cookie the users and make sure the experience they saw is persistent that solves most of this problem. But if you run a lot of separate tests than it's hard to avoid this.

Good point! What do you use to do in-app A/B testing?
tswartz··on How Zenefits' Big Bet on Sales Went Wrong
interesting that you've had issues with your paychecks... <logs into Zenefits to check>
tswartz··on How Zenefits' Big Bet on Sales Went Wrong
agreed, that does seem really long, especially since the account executives are handing off their clients to customer success.
tswartz··on How Zenefits' Big Bet on Sales Went Wrong
I'm not sure on the legality of 12 months, but a cancellation clawback is typical. The role I was in the clawback was within the first 60 days.
tswartz··on Show HN: Collapse Comments on Hacker News
Cool! I've always found it hard to read comments in the big discussions. It would be helpful if you had more details on what comments it collapses in the Chrome store description. In the screenshot it didn't look like comments were collapsed. Can I adjust which comments are collapsed, is it just deeply nested comments?
tswartz··on How Zenefits' Big Bet on Sales Went Wrong
Having worked in sales a while back I can attest to how important getting the right sales culture is, and also how incredibly challenging this can be. Companies need to align the reps' goals with that of the company, and too often when high quotas are put in place the quality of a sale goes out the window and it's sell the software to whoever can buy it (regardless if they can afford it or use it properly) and let customer support / retention worry about that. It's the, "just hit your quota" attitude which can be very harmful to a company.

Best excerpt from the article:

>The machine, however, wasn’t nearly as sturdy as this confident talk made it seem. Behind the scenes, operations staff scrambled to help customers enroll in health care, an error-prone and frustratingly low-tech process that involved manually entering data into spreadsheets and sending it to health insurance carriers, according to former employees. Account managers felt like they were constantly putting out fires, or resetting the expectations of customers who had been given a hard sell.

>Zenefits’ compensation structure created big rewards for sales reps on the enterprise team, who handled the largest customers, despite the reality that, as Zenefits later acknowledged, its software and processes worked better for smaller companies.

tswartz··on A Practitioner’s Guide to Net Promoter Score
This post has some useful advice on how and when to implement an NPS survey. As someone who is implementing it for the first time at my company it was helpful to learn that LinkedIn sees NPS as a lagging indicator and that they don't expect to see a meaningful change right after product launches. It takes time for users to internalize the change and thus change their "promote" opinion.

I was a bit surprised that they only survey NPS once a quarter. I'd expect this to be an ongoing weekly survey, especially since LinkedIn has the traffic to get significance quickly from a small % of their visitors.

tswartz··on A website for testing your app ideas
Interesting site. I think it could be more helpful if it also had a "wouldn't use" button that also asks for specific feedback. Sometimes its good to hear peoples concerns when you are still in the idea phase.
tswartz··on Lyft Files to Raise as Much as $1B
>Amid reports of Lyft’s financial struggles in its recently leaked financials, it’s obvious why the company seeks to raise so much money — the on-demand transportation market is a tough place to operate, especially with competition like Uber. According to Bloomberg, the ridesharing startup took a net loss of $127 million in the first half of this year while bringing in less than $47 million in revenue.

Does anybody know how this loss compares to Uber? I don't recall any of their financials being leaked recently.

tswartz··on A $99.99 Surfboard Upends the Industry
This video came out in 2013 of a pro surfer riding the Wavestorm in the big waves of Jaws. It helped fuel Wavestorm's sales, if it rides pretty well at Jaws, it will be just fine in a 2 or 3 foot beginner swell.

tswartz··on New Initiatives for Lyft Drivers
I was driving in SF for two month a couple years ago. Lyft took a 15 or 20% cut right off the top, then I covered taxes, gas, weekly car wash. I also included the time when I ended a shift, but had to get back to my apartment, or had to take a break to fill gas or grab some food in between rides.

After that stretch I drove periodically when I wanted some extra money. It's very flexible on hours.

tswartz··on New Initiatives for Lyft Drivers
My car is paid off so I didn't factor that in. But you make a good point. Probably the majority of drivers have some sort of payment, whether that's a car loan or a lease.
tswartz··on New Initiatives for Lyft Drivers
One "savings" I see is that you wouldn't have to wash your car (which in the city for me meant an extra $35 a week). You also save on general car maintenance. The city streets are tough on the suspension and brakes. You can drive that rental into the ground :)
tswartz··on New Initiatives for Lyft Drivers
Yes, I saw a similar stipulation in regular car insurance. Unfortunately, I don't think a lot of drivers read the fine print.
tswartz··on New Initiatives for Lyft Drivers
I like how Lyft is trying to make it easier for more people to drive for them. But, after Lyft's cut, tax and gas the hourly rate was very low. I drove for a couple months and they promised $25 - $35 during peak time, but I netted out to about $10/hr. Now to add on a Hertz rental fee, that is going to get very slim.

Obviously this is still a better job for some people then there alternative. Lyft will market to new drivers with the higher rates and ease of renting a Hertz vehicle.

tswartz··on Lyft Announces Strategic Partnership with Didi
>As part of our global partnership, Didi also invested $100 million in Lyft.

Hmmm..very interesting. Looks like Didi is trying to get more aggressive in Uber's own backyard.

tswartz··on Show HN: 10HN – Top articles from HN served every morning and every evening
I like the simple format of the articles...and without ads. Not sure how long that will last ;)

One piece of feedback. When I'm halfway down an article and swipe left it puts me halfway down the next article. It would be better if I was back at the top of the next article.

tswartz··on FAA records detail hundreds of close calls between airplanes and drones
I think it's good that the FAA is documenting close calls with drones, however the press is a little overblown. This long time pilot views drones less of threat then geese or other large birds. That may change if drones get bigger and heavier, but all things point to drones getting smaller.

tswartz··on Show HN: Remembered.io – Easily remember everything worth remembering
I agree that the value prop is too vague on the homepage. When I first looked at it the question that came to mind is, "How is this different than Evernote?". It seems like a paid version of note taking system. Perhaps you can focus more on the differentials. I noticed your comment said something about setting reminders, but I didn't see that on the homepage. Maybe I missed it.

tswartz··on Show HN: My first Rails app Bar Roulette, bar hopping with help from Uber and Yelp
Hey HN - This is the first app I’ve built, it was coded with Ruby on Rails. I built it as a way to explore Uber’s new ride request API. I haven’t seen anything using their API where you don’t know where you are going until after the Uber ride finishes. It got a little bit of press last week, but I really value the HN community and I would love to get your honest feedback. Is this something you’d use? Concerns you have that would keep you from using it? Do you have suggestions on how to improve the homepage?

tswartz··on A Miserable Debt-Free Life
The problem with option 2 is that it doesn't take into account risk. You need a much higher and more secure place for a return to alleviate risk. Similar to what others said most people are taking out loans for things that they don't have the cash for. They aren't taking out the loan at a low interest rate so they can invest their cash somewhere else. But they are told, take the cheap money and invest elsewhere. They just forget to do that last part.
