My LG washer and dryer are just over 10 years old now. They haven't been flawless. I've had to repair both of them once. The washer had a pump go out so the clothes stayed soaked. The dryer had one of the rollers wear out. Both easy fixes under $50 following youtube videos. But we also have models before "smart" appliances were really becoming common. I'm still impressed by the washing machine. It gets cloths to "damp" before it's done. Far better than any other washing machine I've used before and cuts down on the work the dryer is doing.
We see this more locally in the US as well. There's something called the California effect. California emission standards were more strict than the rest of the country, but it didn't make sense to make California only vehicles and then vehicles for the rest of the country. So automakers built to the California standards and residents in all of the other states got to benefit from cleaner air as a result.
Yes, but you see this is all part of Anthropic's master plan. They know developers are incapable of renaming files so the fact that Anthropic resisted Agents.md is proof that they were trying to lock you into them as a vendor.
It also works more reliably. I've tested this quite a bit. Instructions in files referenced via CLAUDE.md are more likely to fall out of context or to be ignored. Raw project level CLAUDE.md instructions are the second most durable available as far as I know. I used to have a "well organized" hierarchy of rules and instructions. Collapsing all of that into CLAUDE.md + skills made things far more predictable and "as instructed".
I’ve been diving into Ink Master highlights on YouTube lately. These are typically all excellent artists but they don’t always produce excellent work. I’ve seen some hands that could have come out of an early gen ai model permanently inked into someone’s skin.
I didn't see the author make that statement. She stated she's seen that behavior from other women. My wife was a volunteer coordinator for our school district for two years. Not a single dad volunteered during the entire time she was there. Consequently, my wife seems to run into someone she knows basically every time we leave the house. Every time I leave the house I hope I don't see anyone I know and can just get about my day in peace.
Right? I've been automating things and eliminating jobs using technology for over 20 years. No you do not need a team of five to manage your monthly reporting. We can build automated reports that are delivered automatically to everyone who needs them! No you shouldn't be managing all of this data in an excel file on a shared computer. I don't care if 90% of what Dave does during the week is maintain that file. Let's streamline that.
Suddenly it's very different when it's our jobs being automated away.
I rarely use Claude or Claude Desktop. Almost 100% of my usage is Claude Code because it ties into all of the private infrastructure I've built around it. I've had decent success using CC for generating Office documents of various formats. It tends to reach for a python script and library to generate them and the output is typically clean and easy to apply a template to. I have had issues where I need to manually modify the files to demonstrate format and style, but that's also something that can built into context after with references to templates.
Where do you see Claude doing better than what I'm seeing with Claude Code in these circumstances? Are there any reasons for me to leave my pretty heavily customized CC environment for the other versions?
What sort of issues do you see with spreadsheets? I almost never use Claude or Cowork. Just Claude Code. When I've generated or modified spreadsheets it tends to build python scripts for it which makes regeneration trivial. I have to fight a bit on formatting sometime, but I find if I format it the way I want I can get CC to read the file follow that in the future.
Claude Code has almost always been able to do a passable job of this. I wonder if this new version will need less cleanup. Claude Code would write python scripts to generate the deck. It at least formatted cleanly with templates.
I recently went to a casino. I had dropped my daughter and her friends off at a theme park a couple hours away from home and I had about six hours to kill. Took out $200 and planned to nurse it on slot machines for a few hours. 20 minutes later and I walk out of the casino with just over $600 in my pocket. I didn't get the amount of time playing that I wanted, but couldn't justify sinking more in when I was up so quickly. Best to walk away. Many people struggle with that. Probably won't gamble again (outside of the odd $1B Powerball moonshot) for a couple years.
When I was young living in Oklahoma my family was something else. Dirt poor living in Wilson, OK. At the time gambling was illegal in Oklahoma so a few times a year they would pool money together and some folks would drive to Texas to buy rolls of scratch off tickets. A much more desperate version of the "what if I win" game that I sometimes play.
Most families I personally know who have gone it’s far from an annual trip. This will be their once in a lifetime or maybe once in a decade trip to Disney World. Literally saved up and planned for years for that “dream” family vacation.
Like when I was poor living in a trailer park with my parents going out to eat at Olive Garden or Red Lobster was a special occasion. We got to go to the “nice” restaurant and splurge. I doubt anyone who frequents HN from the US considers those to be “nice” or “high quality” restaurants. To some on HN Disney World is or could be an annual trip. For most others it’s a major event. I’m sure a significant amount of debt is accrued in a many cases to make their vacation a reality.
There's this weird thing where HN users seem to think for some reason they are better than other people and users of this site wouldn't do X. It all seems incredibly silly with zero foundation in reality. This site has tons of morons. Just like every other publicly accessible website with free sign ups. You can see examples of this spread all throughout the comments on this post as an easy example.
My interest in a folding iPhone depends on the form-factor of the most compact aspect ratio. Apple seems really reluctant to show the folded phone versus other models. I can see the appeal of the tranformation into a larger form factor, but I already have issues with the size of Apple phones. And I have big hands. My hands cramp on small handhelds like the Switch. But I'd also like to be able to single hand respond to things on my phone if it's possible.
With the rate that any sort of respect is disappearing from society, I'm sure you're right. It would never occur to me to brighten up my mail carrier's day by giving them a small gift for x-mas. But my wife who is a whole six days older than me has picked up on this lesson from her mom. Not just gifts. But "thank you"'s as well. My kids birthdays aren't over until they have completed the "thank you" responses to the gifts that they have received. All I have learned from this is that my wife is a better person than I am.
This is in response to a literal moderator on the site complaining about comments on the site. Why would I need to email anyone? The moderator is already involved and just wringing their hands.
If only there were some sort of moderation on this site. Surely there's nothing that non-moderators can do. So it feels weird when a mod complains about shit like this which appears everywhere. If only you were willing and able do something about it. Meanwhile people like me are rate limited for daring to question the lack of and uneven "moderation" on this site.
Would be crazy to work for a company where you had confidence that like half your colleagues would be "laid off" after successfully delivering a project.
And I think people like you are the biggest problems in society. Someone willing to sell out your own people to support blatant racist parties like the AFD. You think that they will accept you because you're one of the "Good Minorities". But this story has played out over and over again throughout history. Tokens get spent. And that's all you can ever be to them. I hope your wake up isn't the same as what Hispanic MAGA are experiencing in this country. Never mind. I hope it is. I hope you get the life you vote for other people to experience.
I'm not sure that's an accurate read. Broadcom changed the calculation by raking capex customers over the coals. Doesn't matter if you own the hardware and lease the data center space if your virtualization stack increases their prices by 1000% with a year notice. They would effectively make companies pay higher than cloud tier premiums for just maintaining their existing services running on VMWare.
That conservatism works by creating an "other" to blame all of their problems on. It's very comforting for a certain type of person. All of their problems exist because too many brown people live in their city. Same strategy has played out over and over again. Sometimes we have to put them down like Nazi Germany. Too often we let them off with a slap on the wrist like we do with Republicans every single election cycle regardless of the damage they do.
"If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you."
I've also got a lifetime Plex pass, but have moved on. I was tired of fighting Plex for what the home screen looked like. It seemed like every update there was more Plex bullshit and less of my actual media without digging through menus. I'd configure it to be just my media, and the next update ads and content from other streaming services kept showing up.
Best to specify the formats you can play in the *arr tools than rely on client transcoding. I aim for media I can direct play and the filters in radarr and sonarr make that pretty easy. I also use tdarr to clean up / convert things I couldn't get a direct play file for.
It helps to understand how these tools work. One of the reasons CLAUDE.md doesn't survive longer contexts is it's towards the top of the context. One of the reasons the Claude Code voice survives is it's part of the output style which gets "reminded" to the context at every turn as part of the system context. If you want something truly durable, you should customize your output style. I have zero "load-bearing" issues.
