tspike··on LEGO Building Instructions
This is definitely a “get off my lawn” comment. Creativity with Lego has never been more vibrant. I encourage you to visit your local Lego fan convention, or explore one of the many online forums where people share their “MOCs.”

Those “specialized” pieces are incredible fodder for sculpting. Check out newelementary.com to see some examples.

Rebrickable. Very much still alive.

RIP Bacon Reader.

Reddit, you’ve burned so much goodwill.

I’ve been an enthusiastic user for over 14 years. Now I’m planning to delete my content.

At one point recently, I got excited about applying for an engineering leadership position with you, but this debacle has made me realize your senior leadership is not who I want to be reporting to.

Wow thanks, I had no idea
tspike··on Dandelion Root Recipes
Dandelions are an incredible gift from nature. What other plant is completely edible, self propagates with no intervention, brings up nutrients from deep in the soil for other plants, blooms beautiful flowers year round and provides endless entertainment for children?

The number of intractable societal problems that would suddenly become non-issues if the average household engaged in basic permaculture boggles the mind. It’s hard to think of a more apt metaphor for our ills than the fact that we actively apply cancer-causing poison to kill them as a matter of course.

tspike··on New York City may be sinking under the weight of its skyscrapers
ChatGPT would almost certainly do a better job than that
tspike··on When you lose the ability to write, you also lose some of your ability to think
Is it fair to say that you define thinking as operating in a nearly identical manner as the human brain?
tspike··on When you lose the ability to write, you also lose some of your ability to think
Here was my first try:

Prompt: Using profanity and in the style of Allen Ginsberg, write an introductory paragraph in narrative style about why you love writing.

ChatGPT: Holy shit, I fucking love this mad dance of letters, this wild waltz of words that paint the goddamn cosmos on a blank page! The rhapsodic rhythm, the sonorous symphony of syntax -- it's like jazz on paper, like Kerouac and Ginsberg on a bender in the bowels of the Beat Generation, spewing poetic profanity into the yawning abyss of the universe. It's the goddamn primal scream of the soul, the raw, unfiltered fuck-you to silence and nothingness. The alphabetic alchemy, where ink and imagination bleed together to birth whole new worlds, where lines live and breathe and fuck and fight and love. It's a heady high, an intoxicating inebriation, a goddamn narcotic nectar. It's the literary lust that throbs in the very marrow of my being, the fevered flame that flickers in the dark and dances to the tune of the typewriter's tap-tap-tapping. And oh, what a tune it is -- as chaotic as Coltrane, as radical as Rimbaud, as transcendent as Thoreau. It's why I fucking love writing, this goddamn glorious game of god-creation and galaxy-making. It's the ultimate trip, man, the ultimate fucking trip.

tspike··on De-Stressing Booking.com (2019)
Sure, but it’s a lot harder to test for things like stress or being stymied than it is to test for conversion. Easy implementation + results that make money graphs go up will win every time without C-level involvement.

Any time this argument gets trotted out it's using a baseline of European post-agrarian feudalism. There were definitely peoples in the past who enjoyed a high quality of life for many generations, but they tended to be small groups concentrated in areas of abundance, and were usually among the first to be exterminated by outsiders.
tspike··on The Myth of the Alpha Wolf
I think TFA addresses this pretty clearly. The idea of the alpha wolf is that within a pack, through a series of fights, the most aggressive and assertive animal rises to a leadership position. In the wild, what's actually observed is that the leadership positions are the parents, with infighting an extremely rare phenomenon.

tspike··on GPT-4
> I think that we're eventually going to hit another road block regardless of how much progress we can make towards that end.

I have a sneaking suspicion that all that will be required for bypassing the upcoming road blocks is giving these machines:

1) existential needs that must be fulfilled

2) active feedback loops with their environments (continuous training)
