tscs37··on Showdown: MySQL 8 vs. PostgreSQL 10
You can somewhat mitigate the typo problem with integers by encoding them to the outside with parity included.

An 8 bit parity should be able to easily tell any possible typo in a 32 or 64bit integer and even correct errors. You could even put the parity into the lowest 8 bit of the integer.

I'm currently working on this for a project of mine to not only prevent typos but tolerate them by using the parity and using letters that are far apart on my QWERTZ keyboard (bit local but it should work for most keyboard sets and I have parity to fall back on)

tscs37··on Showdown: MySQL 8 vs. PostgreSQL 10
Keep in mind that JSONB is different than JSON in PG. The later will not transform the JSON simply check consistency and has limits and performance hits.

JSONB is encoded and will transform your JSON, it will drop duplicate keys and order might not be preserved. But it's also faster and easier to use (IMO).

There is no real reason to use MongoDB tbh, PG JSONB can be handled like any other field and you can even index into JSON (partial indices even; only index rows where a field is present in the JSONB)

tscs37··on No one’s ready for GDPR
Keeping things for tax purposes requires no consent, same for anything you are legally required to keep record off. Video cameras most certainly fall under legitimate interest (as long as you follow the law about using surveillance in your country).

From what I recall on the info I've seen locally is that you don't need a DPO until you hit 250 employees.

tscs37··on GDPR vs. Blockchain: Technology vs. The Law
Git is a blockchains. I don't see any rules that a consensus algorithm needs to be non-human or that only a single chain can be authorative.

Git is a blockchain that has none of the usual problems of blockchains since the arbiter is a human and they can do as they please. Argreement between humans is a social procedure.

tscs37··on Zuckerberg didn’t make any friends in Europe today
I think they were interested in getting answers from Zuck but with how the session turned out, I think most of them have most of the answers they need even if Mark didn't speak it out loud.
tscs37··on Playing battleships over BGP
Considering the modern role of BGP it's probably a bit like playing battleship on the controls of two nuclear power plants using the power grid.
tscs37··on Why, if p=.04, we can't say the study has a 4% chance of being false positive
From what I understood in my recent statistics course, the p-value is the probability of receiving a specific result considering the null hypothesis is true. It's usually compared by using some distribution model (binomial, etc.) over the actual study results.

Short version; the p-value is only sufficient to disprove a hypothesis, not to prove it. If your p-value is 1% than that means you make experiments until the probability that you are wrong is less than 1%. (for example, you throw coins 100 times, 90 times is head, the probability of that result is below 0.04 so the coin is not fair)

That still doesn't mean you are right. Just that at the moment you have not been prove wrong or the data is not sufficient to prove you wrong.

tscs37··on Germany Acts to Tame Facebook, Learning from Its Own History of Hate
>For example, Wolfenstein, a game about a Jewish commando fighting against the Nazis, was censored in Germany to comply with the law.

Art, sciences and education are obviously exempt from these rules and while many pretty much assumed games to be art a recent court confirmed that games would be ruled as art.

The reason why Wolfenstein was censored is because of the USK, the board behind age ratings in germany, which has in the past been rather strict with nazi symbolism, regardless of context. They've softened up a lot and would wave through games with nazi symbolism like the newer Wolfenstein titles, however publishers don't want to take the chances of having to reapply for rating and simply already submit a censored version before it even hits their desks.

tscs37··on Germany Acts to Tame Facebook, Learning from Its Own History of Hate
When you go to another country, you follow the law there. If you break it, expect punishment.

That doesn't mean the law is okay but the country is fully free to punish you as they see fit.

> Nazi symbols were completely normal and everywhere.

Not here. Outside of certain exceptions, don't go waving around Nazi symbols in the country that to this day regrets this part of history.

tscs37··on WHOIS blackout period likely starting in May
My sites are all dual-language so I don't see that as a problem.
tscs37··on Understanding Victimhood Culture
I think that specific definition was more meant towards "relying on an authority figure or other third party to resolve the conflict without ruining the life of either".

I don't think the author wanted to cover vigilante behaviour under that.

tscs37··on EU parliaments website in violation of GDPR
> A non-democratic state controlling democratic states seems to me to be a spectacularly bad idea. But I'm a consultant and I've worked and work for these people, mostly indirectly.

The EU isn't a state it's a union of states and there is EU elections happening.

tscs37··on Reddit's redesign increases power usage of user's devices
But why is there no static fallback for when some script doesn't work? BetterReddit allows me to use both methods concurrently on the old design, why is the new design limited to a method that doesn't work for me?
tscs37··on Tarballs, the ultimate container image format
To some extend I sympathize with GP because your post is exactly why I'm currently not using nix or guix.

While it's neat that I can do introspection on my package graph, I don't immediately see any benefit for me when I startup my containers.

I would love to see a full guix/nix script of what GP asked to see a comparison, I like to see hands-on stuff not theoretical.

tscs37··on WHOIS blackout period likely starting in May
Some minor Obfuscation should be okay "mail at example dot com" => "mail@example.com" and similar.

Plus I'm fairly certain providing temporary mail addresses (with decent lifetime) would also be okay.

Specialised Lawyer isn't quite right, a business that competes with you needs to file a complaint (IIRC from law course).

tscs37··on WHOIS blackout period likely starting in May
If those create any abuse then you can still contact the registrar.

From what I understand the eventual plan for WHOIS to only allow access if there is truly legitimate interest. Everything else can be filtered over the registrar.

tscs37··on WHOIS blackout period likely starting in May
In germany there is an imprint requirement so you'll always have a contact point for these things.

Unlike WHOIS it's on a website so you can protect this information much more easily from scraping and spamming.

tscs37··on SQLite Query Language: upsert
Usually for the serializable isolation level you need to manually rerun the transaction.

There are some DBs that do that for you like CockroachDB.

tscs37··on Web Authentication API
Essentially yes. You'll need something like Firefox Sync or providers will have to implement a way of adding devices.

However the WebAuthn API also leaves options for password managers and other endpoints managing the actual secrets.

tscs37··on Web Authentication API
Hmm, yeah, I was more aiming at "Firefox has working WebAuthn in the newest Version, Google just doesn't use it properly or at all", I should have expressed that better.
tscs37··on Web Authentication API
It works with Firefox 60, Google however sometimes relies on Chrome quirks not specified in the standard which may not make it usable in Firefox. (Last I checked)
tscs37··on Web Authentication API
Sorta, Client Certs but the Client generates and authenticates them, the Server only stores the fingerprint and authenticates them on it's side.

And with a better UI and flow since you don't need it to establish connection.

tscs37··on Show HN: Avoid GDPR by blocking EU visitors
>Well, if the user is a begginer-level hacker it will easily be able to bypass the block.

Or alternatively, operating uMatrix at default settings. Didn't even see anything.

tscs37··on iOS 11.4 to Disable USB Port After 7 Days: What It Means for Mobile Forensics
It communicates power needs but nothing else until the user unlocks the phone and enables data transfer.
tscs37··on iOS 11.4 to Disable USB Port After 7 Days: What It Means for Mobile Forensics
Probably because for any decent charging speed (beyond 500mA) you need to talk to the other side. Atleast per standard.
tscs37··on Gitea: Open source, self-hosted GitHub alternative
That doesn't mean that the maintainers of a community fork will have to follow every demand of the userbase.
tscs37··on Gitea: Open source, self-hosted GitHub alternative
There is a milestone system setup on github which tracks when features will be introduced into master and such, so I wouldn't call it a lack of a vision statement.

I don't think a vision statement is necessary either since I'm a fan of developing software primarly for dogfooding, fixing problems you have is probably a good way to improve the software for others.

tscs37··on Gitea: Open source, self-hosted GitHub alternative
Atm I use GoCD though I'm considering to switch to Drone.
tscs37··on Gitea: Open source, self-hosted GitHub alternative
Gitea is however the more active (and quite active) side of the fork so I'd say it was quite successfully. You can easily check this in the contribution statistics on Github for both projects.
tscs37··on Gitea: Open source, self-hosted GitHub alternative
Outside Jupyter Notebook Gitea supports all of these plus is managed by a community team not a singular maintainer with commit access (last I checked).

A good product is not defined by having a feature list.
