tschellenbach··on Europe to End "Salary Secrecy": Employee Salaries to Become Public by 2026
I actually think this is good for both employees and companies. Transparency makes the market more efficient.
tschellenbach··on Founder Mode
I think it's related to the job market atm. Everyone is hired in a stretch position at very high comp. This is true for VPs, directors, ICs etc. Because of this it's less viable than it was as a manager to be fully hands off.
tschellenbach··on Midjourney web experience is now open to everyone
I've been using it for a while and it's amazing :)
tschellenbach··on CockroachDB license change
CockroachDB is easier to manage and more cost effective than Postgress due to that. But now I suspect the balance tips back to Postgres
tschellenbach··on CockroachDB license change
We will probably end up removing CockroachDB from our infra due to this change. It also makes me a bit worried about their long term viability. How much ARR does CockroachDB have and what was their last round valuation...?
tschellenbach··on Russ Cox is stepping down as the Go tech lead
Thank you, amazing language :)

tschellenbach··on Panic at the Job Market
Important to not get frustrated, but try to understand how things work and why they work that way.
tschellenbach··on I am starting an AI+Education company
Imagine world class education, for everyone, accessible to all at the price of Netflix. AI can be a teaching assistant, but also makes it easier to create course materials. Generating video explanations, infographics etc.
tschellenbach··on Squarespace to Go Private in $6.9B All-Cash Transaction with Permira
those are quarterly revenue numbers. they are at >1B in revenue
tschellenbach··on Go or Rust? Just Listen to the Bots
years ago we switched from python to go. super happy we didnt go for rust, C++ or elixir. go is the get stuff done and make it fast language. my startup would have had a hard time and not grown as much if it wasn't for go
tschellenbach··on Roblox Studio boss: children making money on the platform isn't exploitation
Bit of a weird take no? When I was 13 google ads was a great source of income for me. Learned a lot back in those days, definitely a foundation that enabled me to succeed in the future.
tschellenbach··on Cloudflare R2 IA storage tier
does anyone know which products of cloudflare have the most revenue?
tschellenbach··on WebSockets vs. Server-Sent-Events vs. Long-Polling vs. WebRTC vs. WebTransport
(I work at Stream, we power activity feeds, chat and video calling/streaming for some very large apps)

You should in most cases just use websockets with a keep-alive ping every 30 seconds or so. It's not common anymore to block websockets on firewalls, so fallback solutions like Faye/Socket.io are typically not needed anymore.

WebTransport can have lower latency. If you're sending voice data (outside of regular webrtc), or have a realtime game its something to consider.

tschellenbach··on Mass timber is great, but it will not solve the housing shortage
The crisis is not related to the cost of building housing. It's due to regulatory hurdles preventing houses from being built.
tschellenbach··on My co-founder wants to bring his wife as a late joining co-founder
You'll get a lot of misguided advice on an app like this. At the early days of a startup you need people who care, who will find a way to succeed despite the odds, who will stick around even if it doesn't make economic sense for them. Friends, family are often some of the best people to work with. (if, its an important if, if they are excellent)

I would only be upset about this if people who have a personal relationship are held to a lower bar. The bar should be higher for them to avoid any doubt about favoritism.

In your case the real question is not their personal relationship, its more about if the team is excellent and if you trust them.

tschellenbach··on Optimizing technical docs for LLMs
What are the competing solutions for connecting github, docs to LLMs? Who are your main competitors?
tschellenbach··on Amazon joins companies arguing US labor board is unconstitutional
Feels like there is a balance between ensuring good protection and still allowing markets to be efficient.
tschellenbach··on American VC Firms Investing Billions into PRC Companies Fueling the CCP Military
Meanwhile, TikTok and Agora are still going strong. Shouldn't they address that?
tschellenbach··on I'm an engineer that needs to sell my services. Any good books on sales?
for Stream I took the first 200 sales calls myself. I think you need to really just go do it a lottttt. Ignore all the books, just focus on understanding the customer's pain point and follow up faster and more often than any big company would.
tschellenbach··on Why Elixir Is the Best Language for Building a Bootstrapped, B2B SaaS in 2024
Django and Rails are by far the best for small projects. It's not close.
tschellenbach··on Oceans May Have Already Seen 1.7°C of Warming
I think it's the opposite. The push for politics to do something is having an impact, we are making progress in lowering emissions. But it's not enough, and there are constraints on democratically elected leaders. Eventually, public sentiment will change, but not soon enough.
tschellenbach··on Oceans May Have Already Seen 1.7°C of Warming
How do you get people to vote for this given that it will increase prices/lower their standard of living today?
tschellenbach··on Oceans May Have Already Seen 1.7°C of Warming
There is just no democratic support for fixing global warming since it's too expensive. See the riots in France when they tried to tax gas more heavily. I like Bill Gate's book on the topic. We need technological progress in several areas -> lower the premium on solving climate change -> enable political solutions.

(Don't get me wrong, I wish a political solution was possible. Climate change is a major threat. But in a democracy leaders can't do deeply unpopular things. Lots of people want to fix climate change. The challenge is it currently requires increasing the price of construction, electricity, food, and gas)

tschellenbach··on Elon Musk's $55B Tesla Pay Package Voided by Judge
Fine for non-majority shareholders to be able to sue. Also fine that they win. But 6 years after the package was awarded?
tschellenbach··on Brex Layoffs
Likely not the last round. From their numbers, it seems pretty clear that they need to become profitable.
tschellenbach··on The failure of self-checkout technology
Big user experience gap between self checkout in The Netherlands, Albert Hein, vs Walmart/King Soopers etc.
tschellenbach··on Bosses are using RTO mandates as a way to blame employees as a scapegoat
People literally can't agree on anything. Meanwhile, roughly 100% of companies are cutting back on remote work. It's not a cult or some conspiracy, it just has real problems and companies are responding to that. Does it work for some people, yes. Will it work better in the future, probably. Does it cause massive problems for large parts of the workforce today: definitely.
tschellenbach··on Bosses are using RTO mandates as a way to blame employees as a scapegoat
I had several teams abused remote work. From not doing much of anything to working multiple jobs. We still have remote work at Stream, but it's reserved for teams where recruiting is very hard and performance is excellent. I think almost all companies are cutting back heavily on remote work.
tschellenbach··on Bosses are using RTO mandates as a way to blame employees as a scapegoat
I think it's funny how HNews is filled with this type of content. While there are also many posts about people not working at all remotely or working multiple jobs. I think we all have friends who work multiple roles or do nothing remotely.

So it's not exactly surprising that companies are stopping with remote work, or at least are becoming careful with remote work.
