trusche··on Neal Stephenson: Why I Am a Sociomediapath (2015)
They can hardly get worse. I used to be a huge fan of NS, but Seveneves was the last book of his I bought without reading review first. He seems to have decided that character development is for other people, not to mention the gaping plot holes. Sloppy and superficial.

For me, an invaluable companion for learning openings has been http://www.eudesign.com/chessops/. The design of the site is unchanged since ca. 1995, but it works well.
trusche··on Rare color photos of Berlin from the 1930s to the 1960s
I grew up in Berlin in the 70s and early 80s, and I remember some bombed-out ruins that were slowly crumbling. A bit of a post-apocalyptic sight. The ones I remember were close to the wall between east and west Berlin - real estate that used to be city center but now was very much at the margins. Maybe that was a factor in not redeveloping some properties for a long time.

trusche··on Why does Gmail hate my domain?
I've had similar, unfathomable problems with Gmail delivery for a long time, until I added a PTR record for reverse IP lookup for the IPv6 version of my IP address. That did the trick, I haven't had delivery trouble since, even without DKIM (but with SPF).
trusche··on Why did crime plummet in the US?
> Criminals can commit crimes online instead.

Violent crime, not really, and that's what the article is mostly about. But you're right that the shift to online crime seems often to be missed or ignored. For example: http://www.theguardian.com/uk/2013/may/05/crime-statistics-a...

trusche··on Lost Franklin expedition ship found in the Arctic
Brilliant book. Every detail about the expedition that was known at the time is very accurately depicted. The parts that were not known are woven into a fantastical, supernatural horror story. I felt cold just reading about the cold.
trusche··on Vancouver tech surges as U.S. immigration reform idles
This. For comparison, when I had to renew my H1B for another 3 years, I had to leave the country and fly to Berlin for my "visa interview". But first I had to send them my passport, which of course I needed to get into Germany first. So after a lot of expense, several days of wasted time, and anxiety if the courier would deliver my passport on time, the "interview" took all of one minute (handing me my passport back with the Visa stamp). Well, two hours, actually, with going through security and waiting in line. Kafka comes to mind.

trusche··on OS X Command Line Utilities
I use sizeup[1] to maximize the terminal (or any other app) with a keystroke, instead of native full screen. It works across all applications that allow window resizing, and has handy shortcuts for "half" full screen, which is great to position, say, a browser and editor next to each other across the whole screen.

Which reminds me, I really will go and pay my 13 bucks for it now, it's more than worth it. But the free version is fully functional with just an occasional nag screen.

trusche··on The Gravity of Python 2
I'd be interested to see what the HN community has to say about the python 2 vs 3 debate, if there is one. I'm diving into a project where I will definitely use python and am torn between using the "modern" python 3 and the lack (or early alpha stage) or python 3 ports of several important libraries I will have to use.
trusche··on The Open-Office Trap
I find it interesting that in all these articles and studies about open plan offices, the distraction from noise levels is always so prominent, but the other side of that issue rarely gets mentioned. In my experience of open offices, everyone is so aware of potentially disrupting their colleagues by striking up a conversation that nobody does it. So instead of fostering an atmosphere of collaboration, the open office can actually actively prevent it. Is that as common as I think it is?

trusche··on Startups Like Berlin Because Visa Rules Are Nothing Like the U.S.
> I'd have to be paid about 30% just to offset the cost of paying double taxes (both to the US, and to Germany)

This is plain wrong. The US and most (all?) EU states have agreements for the avoidance of double taxation in place. I live and work in Ireland as a German and US citizen. I pay my taxes here, and have to file in the US, but can deduct all my Irish taxes as "foreign taxation credits" or some such, effectively paying nothing to Uncle Sam.

Here's the US-Irish agreement: http://www.revenue.ie/en/practitioner/law/double/usaprot.htm.... I'm sure you can find one for Germany.

trusche··on Twitter Bootstrap Now Powering 1% of The Web
It's not quite a guide, but you can customize what to include, and make tweaks to fonts, spacing and the like, directly on the bootstrap site:

http://twitter.github.io/bootstrap/2.3.2/customize.html

It's fairly self-explanatory, and the resulting file will contain only the code you actually use, making for smaller file sizes.
