trulyme··on Switching to an N95 mask gives a 75x boost in Covid protection
Is it possible that "worse" masks actually perform better in this case, because more air actually passes through the material instead of through gaps? Not advising to use flimsy masks of course, just wondering.
trulyme··on The next big Wi-Fi standard is for sensing, not communication (2021)
However, it could be something employers would want to use when you are working remotely. Unfortunately.
trulyme··on The Rise of Performative Work
I would argue that patient communication is a vital role in healing. Some doctors might get by beeing bad at it, but there should be someone in the system who explains the situation and possible tradeoffs to the patient instead of them. After all, the patient is the single person who is most motivated for healing to succeed. Quite a few doctors never grasp this concept (to be fair, they are similar to many engineers in this), which is a shame.
trulyme··on 5% of 666 Python repos had comma typo bugs (inc V8, TensorFlow and PyTorch)
Yes, single tuple values are useful for example for passing to a function which expects a tuple (because it might expect zero, one or multiple values).

The thing is, your example is the way tuple should be defined. The parenthesis are merely allowed (and ignored). Why? I see this as a mistake of language creators. But to be fair, it is difficult to make a perfect language (or anything really), and Python is pretty close imho.

trulyme··on 5% of 666 Python repos had comma typo bugs (inc V8, TensorFlow and PyTorch)
The "trailing comma creates a tuple" bug actually comes from a disconnect between what people think defines a tuple (parenthesis) and what really does (comma). I always put parenthesis around a tuple for clarity.

Black rules. I love it that I don't need to have a discussion about style with anyone when Black is used on the project.

For now. Like web pages used to work if you disabled JavaScript.
trulyme··on Hacking a VW Golf Power Steering ECU
No technical solution will work against political problems. Any non-conforming vehicle will simply be forbidden. If you want to change anything, make it known how new cars phone home, what the dangers are, why this should be forbidden - only as a society can we prevent surveillance state.

Am I missing something? Why would NVIDIA want to reduce demand for their graphic cards?
trulyme··on A new protocol and tool for PNG file attachments
> As prior art, there’s a draw.io/diagrams.net format which embeds a source string without file name. The source string is encoded in base64 (i.e. unconstrained by PNG), wrapped in XML, then incorrectly encoded as an iTXt chunk.

Anyone know what might be incorrect about draw.io iTXt chunk usage?

trulyme··on Tesla recalls nearly half a million Model 3 and Model S cars
Sure. But the examples you have listed are all on pretty complex systems while hood latch seems very basic. It makes me wonder which issues Tesla didn't recall cars for.
trulyme··on Google's removed all mentions of an Intercept investigation from Search
Yes, that is the reason for the special review, and not that it hurts them instead of a 3rd party. (/s, in case it isn't obvious)
trulyme··on Bugs are evolving to eat plastic
"and continue to provide what we want", you mean? It's not the companies that are the (sole) problem.
trulyme··on Two custom React hooks
Still worth it though, imho - if you have a chance do give it a try. It makes Redux much less verbose and is an ideal abstraction for state management. It never bothered me that much, but forking Redux Toolkit and removing Immer is still an option if you feel strongly about it (should probably be easy).
trulyme··on Two custom React hooks
Thank you for the detailed response! My experience seems to be different, as in my opinion immer solves a problem that should not arise in nice code (in most cases) - state should not be that deep anyway. It also takes away a bit of the simplicity of Redux which is its greatest strength, imho.

But as I said, I still highly recommend Redux Toolkit. After dealing with the code using MobX and the complexities brought by its reactions, I would take Redux anytime. Immer is just a small unfortunate detail, but I can live with it.

trulyme··on Two custom React hooks
They are pretty simple though, and the dev tools are fabulous. I guess we disagree here. :)

Note that I would never (again) use thunk - using such side effects leads to unmaintainable code, at least in my experience.

trulyme··on TikTok streaming software is an illegal fork of OBS
Yes, I know the type - I have met a few of "senior" devs that were anything but. I can imagine their past employer didn't even know their true worth, or lack of. Sorry you had that experience.

trulyme··on YouTube-dl's first release since June 2021
Is this a quasi-captcha because of some legal reasons? I would assume math problems are easy to solve for a computer (easier than for most of the humans, actually).
trulyme··on Two custom React hooks
Kudos on Redux Toolkit! Anyone who complains about boilerplate with Redux has obviously not tried the Toolkit version. Very impressive.

A bit sad that immer was used (a bit too much magic for my taste), but I can understand the reasoning, and if you just accept it, it's ok.

Thank you and all the other maintainers for your work!!!

trulyme··on President Daniels responds to Chinese student's harassment
That's a bit of an exaggeration. Those that try to collect as much data as possible data from visitors will of course find it difficult to be compliant, but many do not do this and are therefore in compliance with GDPR.

I do find the propaganda against GDPR annoying though. As an EU citizen (and someone who had to make sure we were compliant on multiple projects) I am happy about it. Is it perfect? No. But it's still waaaay better than nothing.

trulyme··on Ask HN: Are most of us developers lying about how much work we do?
Would love to hear your hypothesis, care to share it?
trulyme··on Ask HN: Are most of us developers lying about how much work we do?
Most of the other answers focus on how programming is not typing (which I agree with, of course), but I think they miss the point. Yours answers directly and I agree with it.

Working 5 to 10 hours a week seems very low to me, though as a lead or as a coworker I would judge OP by the impact, not by the time spent behind the computer. But I doubt anyone can have serious impact in such time.

I had the chance to work with a brilliant coworker who preferred to slack off - and have passed on recommending him for this very reason.

World is a big place and there are many ways to go through life, so I'm not judging - but if you're asking if this is common, then the answer is "no, not at the places where I worked, and not how I work".

Of course you would have to pay/promise me fortune to get more than 40hr weeks from me, but I'm not hiding that. :-)

trulyme··on Customizing GPT-3 for Your Application
Open alternatives to GPT-3 also seem to exist: https://nlpcloud.io/gpt-3-open-source-alternatives-gpt-j-gpt...
trulyme··on I started a paper website business
You both have a point, except yours is a narrow(er) engineering one. OP solved a real-world problem, and actually solved enough of it to be useful to many people, who were thrilled enough to become customers. That is impressive by itself, but what makes it even more impressive is that it is a new niche!

Would adding new features make it easier to create more complex pages? Yes. Would it improve the experience for the users? I doubt it. It's like adding full text editing mode to a chat - technically viable, but takes away the magic - just give me text and emojis and stop there.

trulyme··on MikroTik RouterOS v7 stable released
Curious, would you trust someone to do that? For me when it comes to network, my paranoia level is sky high. I would definitely not allow some random person to configure my network...
trulyme··on MikroTik RouterOS v7 stable released
Doubtful. Some basic stuff is supported across almost all devices (interface names, speeds, status,...), but more detailed info varies widely between vendors, their OS versions and devices. SNMP SET support is mostly a joke and not worth the trouble. Better use whatever API each vendor came up with.
