trms··on How I motivate myself to write
The post touts writing and publishing regularly as the most important factors in having a blog, as many posts of this style do.

I figured I'd give it a shot, so last summer I set myself the goal of writing one blog post each week, for at least a year. So far, I've never missed the deadline. The audience/reach of my blog, however, didn't change significantly, and it gets progressively harder to go on since it feels like I'm writing "to the void."

A lot of people talk about consistency, but I have come to realize that after a certain point, "marketing," (e.g. spreading your stuff) is even more important. I'd love to see a post talking about that.

trms··on The value of doing a little
This is extremely on point. I was almost not going to post my comment including that book precisely because of the public's feelings towards the author.

When you decouple the ideas in the book from the author though, and weigh them on their own merits, they hold up, at least for me, and that's all that matters.

It's Freeletics. I now added it as a footnote, thank you.

That's a brilliant analogy. It reminds me of something I've read in Scott Adams' book on habits. [0] In the days he was supposed to work out, he'd just put his shoes on and see what happened. That would lead him to the next action, until 99% of the times, he'd end up exercising.

Definitely. In no world is 1 better than 100. In my personal experience, though, when I tried to set myself a goal of doing "100 pushups a day", I'd end up doing none since the effort seemed insurmountable. Telling myself that I'd only do 10 would make sure I'd keep doing that in the long run.
trms··on Ask HN: Is it too late to start creating content on YouTube?
I've just started two weeks ago, and so far the response has been satisfactory. Whether it will last in the long run is to be seen, but if you find your niche, with enough persistence and a focus on quality, I don't see why it would be too late to start creating.

Addendum: doing it for the money is perhaps the wrong reason. It's likely that the network of people you'll get as a result will be even more valuable. Plus, you have to enjoy doing it, otherwise it'll be just like any other job.

trms··on Zettelkasten note-taking in 10 minutes
To your last point: there's now ZK-focused software which has exactly that: a 'what links here' button on the side, which sort of removes the fuss. (Obsidian, to name one)

This. ZK works very well, but not in all areas. People in the humanities are more likely to benefit from it than, say, software engineers. I tried making software-related notes in a ZK and it just didn't _feel_ right. Maybe I should give it another go.
