tripdout··on Google Messages RCS is blocked on rooted, custom ROM Android phones
Disgusting behavior by Google, and even more since it's essentially a shadow ban.

First DRM-ed content, now messaging.

Android should just say they don't allow bootloader unlocking outright anymore, then maybe we can move onto an actually free and open source operating system not ran by an advertising company.

tripdout··on DJI – The ART of obfuscation
I thought it was essentially WiFi.
tripdout··on Wyze security incident update
Well obviously, and I think people can figure that out.

I actually appreciate the more specific details on how the private pictures and videos were actually viewed using terminology from the Wyze app.

tripdout··on Privacy focused platform Skiff is joining Notion, Skiff to be sunset
First time hearing about Skiff, but it looks really cool. Too bad the privacy part isn't going to work once it gets integrated into Notion.
tripdout··on "Niksen": The art of doing nothing
This whole article says nothing about what it actually is.
tripdout··on Asciinema 3.0 will be rewritten in Rust
Seems to have been updated (or just works for me)
tripdout··on Android Studio for Platform
This is a much-improved development experience over AIDEgen [0] and it's predecessor, idegen [1], or even before that just using Vim.

tripdout··on Trunk-Based Development
There's a workflow where you commit to each release branch?

I genuinely did not know that. I thought working on individual branches, merging to master, and then cutting the release branch from there (to merge back into master if any changes were found during testing) was the only major way people actually did things.

tripdout··on Flakes aren't real and cannot hurt you: using Nix flakes the non-flake way
How does Sourcegraph compare to just searching Github? ie file:*.nix BLAH
tripdout··on Flakes aren't real and cannot hurt you: using Nix flakes the non-flake way
Yeah, I use a Linux machine at home, but being able to get my work-provided Macbook up and running with an identical Neovim & ZSH setup almost instantly, without having to figure out how that would all work on MacOS (in terms of package installation, changing the shell, etc) it's super awesome.
tripdout··on Flakes aren't real and cannot hurt you: using Nix flakes the non-flake way
Checking nixpkgs now, it looks like the entire suite of Jetbrains tools are well-supported (except for the newest one, Fleet, since it looks like the people who tried ran into some issues they didn't know how to solve), as well as VMWare Workstation.

Coming from Arch, almost every package I want is on NixOS. The couple I can remember that weren't there are Android Studio for Platform (I packaged it myself following the derivation for the regular Android Studio), Obsidian.nvim (which was packaged a week or two after I mentioned it), and there's been a couple smaller tools that I can't remember.

tripdout··on Tom Scott: After ten years, it's time to stop making videos [video]
Today is 6 months from then.
tripdout··on Android developers no longer need Windows USB drivers
TestDPC is even simpler/lightweight
tripdout··on Looking into the Stadia Controller Bluetooth Mode Website
If the firmware is signed, how is flashing other firmware accomplished?
tripdout··on Paying Netflix $0.53/H, etc.
Spotify average usage is 5 hours a month? No way, that's just 10 minutes / 3 songs a day. My yearly Spotify total was 57,000 minutes, which comes out to just over 2.5 hours a day - and that seems low when I think about it.
tripdout··on 0% of the phrases of the original Wikipedia "Ship of Theseus" article remain
I feel like the overall description from 2003 better explains the concept than the current article:

> According to an ancient Greek legend, Theseus had a warship that was preserved as a historical relic by the Athenians. Some of its boards rotted and had to be replaced. After many, many years, many such replacements occurred. Eventually, none of the original boards were present. Philosophers could then debate whether it was the same ship that Theseus had used, and if not, when it had ceased to be so.

versus the current version:

> The Ship of Theseus is a thought experiment about whether an object which has had all of its original components replaced remains the same object. In Greek mythology, Theseus, the mythical Greek founder-king of Athens, rescued the children of Athens from King Minos after slaying the minotaur and then escaped onto a ship going to Delos. Each year, the Athenians commemorated this by taking the ship on a pilgrimage to Delos to honor Apollo. A question was raised by ancient philosophers: After several centuries of maintenance, if each individual part of the Ship of Theseus was replaced, one at a time, was it still the same ship?

tripdout··on Hardening cellular basebands in Android
> BSP code dump quality

I know they're proprietary, but got any more info on this? Would be super interesting.

tripdout··on Virtual Machine as a core Android Primitive
Why does the tutorial for creating a demo app, https://source.android.com/docs/core/virtualization/writeavf..., only work on Cuttlefish (emulator)?

Nevermind, only the demo app, not the tutorial, so who knows what its doing.

tripdout··on Lack of sunlight during the day is worse than electric lighting at night
I'd love to be very similar to a fruit fly.
tripdout··on Lack of sunlight during the day is worse than electric lighting at night
For fruit flies.

Also, what?

>... circadian rhythms are the 24-hour changes in our physiology that synchronize with the day-night cycle and modulate when we are hungry, sleepy, want sex and have asthma attacks or a fever in the afternoon.

tripdout··on Ask HN: What are some unpopular technologies you wish people knew more about?
Most language package/environment managers do not come close to giving you the guarantees that Nix does.
tripdout··on Onyx, a new programming language powered by WebAssembly
Not to be confused with Onyx, the son of rappers Playboi Carti and Iggy Azalea.
tripdout··on GitHub Renamed Me (2014)
Same here, not sure if they still list it but GitHub had a name-squatting policy on their site, and after referencing that in an email to support, requesting a username of someone who only had a handful of repos about 8 years ago, they released the username to the public so I could switch to it.
tripdout··on I tested four NVMe SSDs from four vendors – half lose FLUSH'd data on power loss (2022)
Flushing in this case is from the SSDs internal DRAM cache to the actual NAND flash?
tripdout··on Ubuntu Pro Shenanigans
Nixpkgs has a stable channel. Plus, it just depends when you update your channel / flake input.
tripdout··on Apple exec defends 8GB $1,599 MacBook Pro, claims it's like 16GB on a PC
Sharing the ram with the CPU, GPU, and the SSD cache makes me wonder how the 8Gb models are even useable with how heavy modern programs are.
tripdout··on macOS Sonoma Boot Failures
My old AM3+ motherboard has an option for full screen boot logo, and it starts in full HD, continuing with systemd boot, all in 1080p.

I thought this wasn't really a problem anymore.

tripdout··on Android and RISC-V: What you need to know to be ready
Oh, hey! Love your project for running Android Studio on NixOS, will do.

Would also be cool if we could get Android Studio for Platform running as well, I'm guessing it shouldn't deviate too much from regular Android Studio.
