trgn··on Rob Pike’s Rules of Programming (1989)
A lot of developers get enamored by fetishes. Just one example, because it's one i always struggle to vanquish in any of my teams.

Devs are obsessed with introducing functional-style constructs everywhere, just for the sake of it. FP is great for some classes of software, but baseline crufty for anything that requires responsiveness (front-ends basically), let alone anything at real interactive speeds (games, geo-software, ...)

The "premature optimization" quote is then always used as a way to ignore that entire code paths will be spamming the heap with hundreds of thousands of temporary junk, useless lexical scopes, and so forth. Writing it lean the first time is never considered, because of adherence to these fetishes (mutability is bad, oo is bad, loops lead to off-by-one errors, ...). It's absolutely exhausting to have these conversations, it's always starting from the ground up and these quotes like "premature optimization is the root of all evil" are only used as invocations to ward of criticism.

boomers didnt want to let go of the welfare state their parents and grandparents had introduced, at the same time they live longer, work less, not nearly had as many kids, and did not effectuate the required productivity growth to offset that.

they will go down in history as the worst generation in modern history, 100% certain of that.

trgn··on A Theory of the World as run by large adult children
it's instinctive, people will readily be accept to be told they're wrong by an authority rather than a peer. people cant cast judgement without having earned to position to do so. similarly, people will not receive judgement when it doesnt come from a valid position of authority.

the answer is not to try and change human psychology, it's to reintroduce the hierarchies and structures where correction and judgement flows through the correct channels.

trgn··on US private credit defaults hit record 9.2% in 2025, Fitch says
> but it's not really historically high

i dont think the inflationary seventies and eighties are great lodestar

low interest rates are historically a sign of a stable polity and economy. so if anything, we want the conditions for prolonged low interest rates, rather than prolonged high interest rate.

trgn··on Writing code is cheap now
thanks!

i would love another bubble. i feel like tech has been in a corner for going on ten years now (covid spike was so brief). it's so concentrated in ai it sucks up everything.

trgn··on Writing code is cheap now
haha! do you know details, what domains?
trgn··on Writing code is cheap now
people became millionaires writing html 30 years ago. there's been these shifts in the past.
trgn··on The US is flirting with its first-ever population decline
a usa with fewer people would be quite nice. more liebensraum for everybody, true affluence, a spacious rowhome in a walkable city and a rustic cabin in the woods for everybody. population decline is really only a problem in welfare states. it took less than 2 generations to demonstrate this.
trgn··on Hard-braking events as indicators of road segment crash risk
much easier too investigate and solve though. a few lines of paint here, a bollard there.

> another car sees a gap and changes lanes in front of you.

it's largely a problem in the left lanes, thats where drivers will bunch up most. the subjective feeling is mostly a reptile brain issue though, the feeling you're getting done over. driving is 90% id, sadly.

trgn··on AI is killing B2B SaaS
counterpoint: why would sales people want to use a different crm each time they job hop every 2-3 years?
trgn··on AI is killing B2B SaaS
thats what theyre all doing. its gimmick and wont really fix the underlying issue.
trgn··on AI is killing B2B SaaS
but it is down 25% in days. if not contagion that ai is going to kill saas, then what?
trgn··on Young adults report lower life satisfaction in Sweden
the population bulge is at 50-60. with tfr as low as they are, we're looking at at multiple decades of a top-heavy pyramid. that's not disappearing anytime soon, it will take a lifetime.
trgn··on Young adults report lower life satisfaction in Sweden
somewhat tangential, but most interesting phenomeon is the phaseshift non-boomers will undergo when they're around 45, surveying what's left, realizing how much they have paid into the system already, and desperate to claim the same rewards. it's a perpetuum mobile. if it needs to end, the young will have to wrestle it from their seniors _now_, because that gap closes fast.
trgn··on Why software stocks are getting pummelled
the crash is indiscriminate, which is really disheartening. even infra software is getting demolished, no llm is going to replace something like mongodb, but it's all traded under the same umbrella.
trgn··on Parking lots as economic drains

do you have link to article or vids where trump or admin talks about this?
trgn··on Surely the crash of the US economy has to be soon
falling usd is a disaster in a consumption economy like ours. fuels inflation. makes investing in usd-denominated assets less attractive. it's not going to boost exports due to tarriff walls. there's no silver lining here.
trgn··on Surely the crash of the US economy has to be soon
real's estate been flat for a number of years now in half the country, down even in some parts. not a crash perse, but certainly a bad investment and starkly different from situation 4-5 years ago.
trgn··on Tesla ending Models S and X production
it's its own design, doesn't look like a fat truck, more something new and big
trgn··on Tesla ending Models S and X production
i guess it's not accompanied with the noise which makes the difference for me
trgn··on Tesla ending Models S and X production
it's one of their models i would like for them to succeed the most. americans love trucks (especially where i live), and the impact of electric truck replacing ice ones on the gestalt of the neighborhood is significant, no noise, no fumes. people tend to drive their electric cars/trucks more gently too. my neighbor bought one, and it's night and day.

and oddly enough, while i kneejerk hated it at first, the design has grown on me, something genuinely different, playful. much rather see a parked cybertruck than yet another oversized bloated "regular" truck.
