trencedamp··on I'm going back to coding by hand
I normally would use find replace in vscode but I either forgot that existed or I was enjoying myself too much
trencedamp··on I'm going back to coding by hand

trencedamp··on Bill Gates tries to install MovieMaker (2003)
This happens when you have people at the top of the chain who don't use the product and people at the bottom who are afraid to speak up, or use it so much they can't see the problems.
trencedamp··on Show HN: Fly By – retro biplane flying game
When you're in a cockpit you're pushing the stick forward to dive, up key on the keyboard is often what we use to represent that but it's not a perfect analogy.
trencedamp··on Show HN: Fly By – retro biplane flying game
Second this. I've been trying to build a casual flying game in unity and getting the physics right is hard.

What I found particularly hard is simulating accurately how gravity works against the aircrafts momentum, and trying to get stall and recovery right

trencedamp··on Just Bury Your Trash
You can't replace the blades on a single use razor any more than you can replace the bristles on a toothbrush
trencedamp··on Just Bury Your Trash
Another point, to counter the " plastic bags are cheap, cotton is expensive" argument, is that most of the reusable bags are plastic too. They are way cheaper to produce than cotton bags, and earn their keep within about 5 to 10 uses as opposed to 100 or whatever the crazy figure was for cotton bags.
trencedamp··on Apple CEO Tim Cook's Legacy Is Dull Products and Spineless Capitulation
> Our dull corporate press is unsurprisingly obsessed with wealth. If you make large gobs of money you are inherently very smart, skilled, and good. Absolutely everything else is a pesky afterthought. It's why Elon Musk, an unremarkable bigot cosplaying as a supergenius engineer, so easily enamoured a shaky U.S. media for the fifteen year run up to his recreational ketamine-fueled nazi ego implosion.

What a fantastic piece of writing. I reread this five times.

trencedamp··on The Road That Couldn't Be Built
The op literally didn't do anything to explain it. Thanks for some context
trencedamp··on Does the Sumerian King List Align with Paleoclimate Events?

trencedamp··on The Road That Couldn't Be Built
This is probably an interesting story but we're just lazy linking to Wikipedia here and Wikipedia has no details. Why was it considered impossible to build this road? All we have is construction details in two to three paragraphs

This feels like point farming to me

trencedamp··on Longest Straight Line Paths on Water or Land on the Earth (2018)
If it's the longest straight path on water OR land then surely it's just the circumference of the earth

trencedamp··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
There's a way simpler solution and it's just to leave your phone at home and put your SIM in a different handset without all your data on it

> Sure, AI (not LLMs) are literally going to cure cancer

If AI cures cancer it will likely do so in a world of such horrible inequality that only the rich will be able to afford the cure

trencedamp··on The Lost Treasure of Sid Meier's Pirates
What a great read. Thanks for posting this!

> Pirates essentially changed the studio's whole identity, something that was incredibly hard to do even in those days.

There are indeed very few examples I can recall of a game that completely changed a studio, but one that comes to mind is Worms. Team 17 mostly made top down shooters and fighting games, until they released a silly trajectory shooting game inspired by the ancient basic game, Gorilla. That was such a massive success they mostly only made Worms games after that

I wish people would find a decent source for these stories in order to post them on here instead of sending us to a tweet. I'm not on Twitterx and it's a mini nightmare on a mobile browser
trencedamp··on Will you have spent more of your life with computers than your family?
Kids are expensive, no doubt. But if you want kids, don't let money be the thing that stops you. That would be a far bigger regret
trencedamp··on Will you have spent more of your life with computers than your family?
My dad always used to say I was addicted to screens growing up. I don't think he was far off the mark (nowadays he's as bad as me)

One time, almost all of my hobbies involved computers. I was a coder. A gamer. A writer. A digital artist. A filmmaker. I made fun Photoshop things for friends. I built websites. I did a lot of dtp. I made music with music apps. All of these things involved me staring at a screen for hours, but I don't consider them wasted time.

As I've gotten older and had kids I've tried to dial it down. I don't game anymore. I don't do social media. If I draw, it's usually with the kids on a giant sheet of paper on the floor. I spend a lot of time with my kids and it makes me happy. But even in that, I would have to concede I spend far more of my day and week in front of a screen than talking to humans.

One of the most common regrets on the death bed is "I wish I hadn't worked so hard, I wish I'd spend more time with my family", And while I don't have the benefit of 7 decades of hindsight and any clarity of mind that comes with being near death, it does seem to me like a slightly unrealistic idea, that we simply could have chosen to work fewer hours and spend more time with loved ones.

Most of us work 40 hours a week to pay the bills, and most of us can't afford to cut down that time. And I would guess for most of the people on hn, those 40 hours are spent in front of the computer.

We all have to work, and we can't all just wave a magic wand and step away from the computer and spend time with the kids instead. Otherwise said kids will end up without a roof over their head.

Yes, you probably spend more time in front of a computer than you do talking to your children, but don't beat yourself up about it

trencedamp··on Why does Opus 5 feel worse to work with?
Total sidebar, but mun logadans site is better than browsers readability modes. I find it so easy on the eye even though the text is tiny on my phone. I don't know what font css combo is being used but it's perfect

trencedamp··on Automatic1111 for Apple metal, 40% speed up sd1.5
It got a lot of use in comedy screenwriting. How many shows have you seen where someone says "don't touch that, that's a load-bearing [object that should never be load bearing]"

The fort episode of community springs to mind but there are plenty others

There's a better solution and that is to just not go on Facebook
trencedamp··on uBlock Origin Is Giving Up the Fight to Keep Ads Off Facebook
The last time I went on Facebook, the ads were so similar to posts it was near impossible to tell one from the other. The problem is compounded by elderly relatives liking or sharing weird AI posts, and an algorithm that seems to be random and non deterministic
trencedamp··on Mushroom behind 'tiny people' hallucinations identified
There's some variety of little people myth in most cultures. There's also giant myths in most and there's no mushroom for that.

I think those kinds of myths are just natural progressions of exaggerations and oral storytelling
