tremon··on UEFA and its national associations will not participate in FIFA competitions

tremon··on UEFA and its national associations will not participate in FIFA competitions
I'm not convinced. There's plenty of large clubs in Europe owned by foreign capital and those clubs have already tried to push a pan-European league for themselves. I can see the FIFA using those teams as leverage to gain a foothold in Europe without UEFA.

* e.g. Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Paris SG, AC Milan and Inter Milan -- in Spain, individual clubs can't be owned by private equity but the La Liga corporation is)

tremon··on Europe's fires are just the start
A comment from an earlier thread alleged that Spanish policy says that forests that are destroyed due to fire don't have to be rebuilt, the land can be re-purposed. That's what's driving the arson in Spain.

I have no way to evaluate the veracity of this site, but https://inspain.news/spains-wildfire-tragedy-now-has-a-human... says:

> In some cases, arson is linked to economic gain: land clearance, insurance fraud, or disputes over grazing rights. Others are sparked by resentment towards environmental restrictions.

Hydro is not renewable when the basins are being refilled by glacial melt as is the case for most of Europe, and precipitation is also becoming more erratic. For example, Iceland is currently relying on hydro power for 70% of its electricity, but current models predict that glacial runoff will peak around 2060 (or earlier, if the arctic temperature continues its upward trend). After that, the potential power to be generated from hydro will gradually decrease, which is why Iceland is now diversifying towards geothermal and wind.

I think that's net zero for electricity only, not net zero for all power generation. It excludes heavy industry and freight shipping, which still have a projected investment window of at least 25 years. Heavy industry in particular would have benefitted from the predictable high-power output of nuclear energy.

I feel that if we're supposed to call a SQL query planner AI, then any compiler that targets more than one architecure (including JIT compilers that optimize for the current processor's cache configuration) should be included as well. And if we're going to be that broad in terms of adaptable command execution then we should be similarly broad in terms of command interpretation, which says to me that all HTML parsers and rendering engines should similarly be classified as AI. After all, SQL queries still follow a very rigid structure and any non-conformant query will be rejected, whereas web engines are very good at recovering from non-conformant HTML input.

It's not just about separating lookup and connect: the fundamental stream abstraction is a point-to-point connection. It's possible to construct one-to-many connections on top of that, but it adds a lot of complexity on both sides. Doing it the other way around (emulating one-to-one connections on top of a one-to-many abstraction) means burdening simple connections with a lot of unnecessary complexity.

> Encampments produce fires, needles, waste, blocked sidewalks, and local crime spikes

Are you saying that if it weren't for such an encampment, homeless people wouldn't be keeping warm, shooting up, and relieving themselves? I don't see how that can be the case. It seems to me that what you are pointing out is that encampments make these events more visible by containing them in one place, rather than them being diffused throughout the city.

Switzerland is not part of the EU nor the Eurozone though. It's still a shortsighted stance of Postbank not to open the app to at least the DACH region, but that specific argument carries little weight.

Your specific example is not intended to address buyer's remorse, but mortgage financing. After agreeing to a house sale, the buyer has three days to have their bank sign off on it. Yes, it's nice that it slightly alleviates pressure but the primary goal is to streamline house sales by making the financing details part of the finalization instead of the decision-making process.

I'll be closing my browser soon anyway and they'll be gone

Sure, your browser cookie will be gone. But you have already allowed the server-side identifiers of your session to be used for whatever purpose, including reconstituting increasingly larger parts of your identity over multiple disconnected sessions. Please don't make the mistake of thinking that clearing your cookies afterwards is the same as rejecting all server-side processing.

Yes, it is strictly necessary to properly honour the user's choice. Not storing a rejection of consent but storing acceptance violates the GDPR because it creates an asymmetry between the effort required to accept vs the effort required to reject user data processing.

> Your tree produces female flowers first and later in the year produces male flowers. This is to prevent self-pollination

How does this work in practice? Do other trees from the same species produce male flowers first, and then female? Logically, if all trees produce female flowers in spring and male flowers in the summer then the species can only survive if the seeds can remain viable unfertilized for months (which is probably not that exceptional for plants, I wouldn't know). But if the female seeds are still viable by the time the plant sprouts its male flowers, exactly how does this prevent self-pollination?

The embryo, not the fetus. Pretty sure that's referring to gastrulation, where the cell blob splits into multiple layers to start cell specialization; it does this by curving in on itself, and the cavity formed by this process becomes the intestinal tract: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gastrulation#Protostomes_versu...

However, that all happens at the embryonic stage (around day 9). At the point where the embryo has advanced sufficiently to be called a fetus (around week 9), the body has already sufficiently developed so that it's impossible to say where "fetal development" starts: https://embryology.med.unsw.edu.au/embryology/index.php?titl...

tremon··on LG monitors silently install software through Windows Update without consent
That would be a good idea actually, but I'm not sure how viable that is within the current Windows Update instrumentation. Allowing local binaries to fetch random URLs through the Windows Update API is no different from them using the HTTP Service unless there's some kind of whitelisting/validation happening there. The alternative would be that Microsoft uses their own Windows Update cdn to host random firmware files that they're not able to verify themselves. Both cases sound like maintenance overhead for Microsoft without benefit to them.
