trasz@FreeBSD.org - FreeBSD committer, Cambridge researcher, NAFO fan, 50 Cent Army member, lifelong deviationist. Likes Unix, HP calculators, and Skinny Puppy. Hates when people get killed, especially for religion and oil.

PS. To the Americans among you, the 50 Cent thing isn't really true; see https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarcasm

Previously (as "trasz", "trasz2", spot the pattern) banned for pointing out that HN tolerates racism, and that they are lying about their moderation policies.

trasz4··on Health advisory on social media use in adolescence
No reason to let your child any media, unless you want them to be literate or sth.

And social media is less harmful than some traditional ones. It's just that you've been conditioned by the traditional ones to believe they are somehow normal.

trasz4··on US on track to set record in 2023 for mass killings after series of shootings
Yup, it's been long known that some state actors, like Russia, do that, usually by amplifying alt-right content.

He can, he just doesn't want to. And if he did we'd probably have no insight into what even happened. The society doesn't even know kings' finances.

None of those were caused by market forces.
trasz4··on The big idea: why you can’t leave climate out of history
>If you think society can adapt and a reasonable reduction of CO2 over time is the best approach using market forces, then for example

Then for example you might be a flat earther too. We've been trying that for past two decades and it's an epic failure.

Ok, how?

trasz4··on UN Human Rights Chief Urges UK to Reverse ‘Deeply Troubling’ Public Order Bill
UK is not a constitutional monarchy. The king could have me executed. The only reason they don't is the lack of need vs the expected public backlash.
trasz4··on UN Human Rights Chief Urges UK to Reverse ‘Deeply Troubling’ Public Order Bill
I'd argue a coronation is just another show. Royalty are a pest, they don't have any important social function; interfering with them should be fine.

Same with presidents and whatnot. They can do their jobs without all that theatre.

trasz4··on UN Human Rights Chief Urges UK to Reverse ‘Deeply Troubling’ Public Order Bill
In UK the king has absolute power, its just that they don't exercise it because in a civilised country they would need to be guillotined afterwards.

How is an unelected king not a dictator?
trasz4··on Unix: An Oral History
They didn't take too much memory, they mostly were just a bad ideas. "Ring security" doesn't really do anything; long command names are unwieldy and counterproductive (see PowerShell) etc; memory-safe languages have always been there in UNIX.

And it's not like C can't be memory-safe, as shown by CHERI/Morello (shameless plug). It depends on hardware.

trasz4··on The big idea: why you can’t leave climate out of history
But of course you can; there's an entire industry behind climate denialism.

The culture war was always there, you just see it now because your media can no longer be censored by capital like they used to.
trasz4··on Where Did Personal Computing Go Wrong (2020)
Except todays applications are way less reliable than what we used two decades ago. It's not that we don't _nee to fix them anymore, quite the opposite. Instead we just learned to ignore those screwups, manually refreshing a page when it fails.
trasz4··on OpenBSD cron(8) now supports random ranges with steps
It's not a hack because of the boilerplate - it's a hack because it's functionality implemented in a wrong place. I think the boilerplate made you believe it's not a hack by making it look professional(ish), ie someone spend time putting a lot of lipstick on that pig, man page and all.
trasz4··on OpenBSD cron(8) now supports random ranges with steps
How does it look robust? Because someone wrote a man page and there's lots of boilerplate in it?

Proper design reduces complexity. The above adds a lot of complexity, and thus it's a hack. Not the appearance.

And there's your problem - you don't realize "writing a wrapper script" is actually simpler than messing with config files.

>Well, yep. Reinventing the wheel each other time.

Erm, no - flock(1) is a UNIX tool, a component if you will. It's the exact opposite of reinventing the wheel.

Not understanding the operating system you're using is fine, but it's good to at least know what you don't know.

trasz4··on OpenBSD cron(8) now supports random ranges with steps
Yeah, but with systemd timers it's just another ad hoc hack.

It's not the "medical establishment" that sanctioned it - American society did.
