trasz3··on Twitter brands BBC a ‘government funded media’ organization
Which is obviously correct - BBC is known for being complicit with Tory agendas.
trasz3··on Twitter is no longer policing Russian and Chinese state-backed media
>Very little goes directly into NPR from the state

Yeah, just the management xD

trasz3··on Why Your IT Manager Hates Easter Eggs–Even If You Love Them
The article claims Easter eggs go against trusting the system, but ignores the fact there is orders of magnitude more crap sneaked in because of said PMs, not despite them.
trasz3··on “He Got Rich from Defrauding People. Do I Have to Be Polite?”
>The whole reason society created politeness is from experience.

This thing here is not politeness, but rather a political correctness. And indeed it does have its advantages, but also disadvantages - like the overwhelming tolerance towards white collar crime, or turning a blind eye to crimes by institutions like Catholic Church.

Life is not filled with absolutes, but people who are scum usually remain scum, and we should have no problem with publicly naming them when it’s an effective way of reducing the harm they pose.

trasz3··on Twitter is no longer policing Russian and Chinese state-backed media
The current NPR CEO used to lead US government propaganda agency, https://www.usagm.gov/who-we-are/management-team/john-lansin.... But yeah, go ahead, maintain they are not controlled by the state xD
trasz3··on F-16 training for Ukrainian pilots successful: U.S. makes course “much shorter”
A year ago Russia was still widely considered to be a great military power.
trasz3··on Twitter is no longer policing Russian and Chinese state-backed media
Twitter failed to flag US state-sponsored media like NPR, so not doing this to eg China seems only fair.
trasz3··on Levels of banned CFCs rising
US hasn’t invaded Syria in a colonial war. They also didn’t commit genocide in Syria.
trasz3··on Levels of banned CFCs rising
And let me guess, you’re not even aware that green every in China - eg nuclear power plants - is growing much quicker than in US?
trasz3··on UK airport scraps 100ml liquid rule with new scanners
Hopefully the rest of post-9/11 idiocy can be rolled back as well, at least outside the US.
trasz3··on UK airport scraps 100ml liquid rule with new scanners
The vast majority of drug victims are really the victims of war on drugs - that’s what makes clean, safe drugs unavailable and forces people to use dangerous replacements.

From the very beginning the American war on drugs was motivated by racism. It’s just another state-organized genocide in disguise.

trasz3··on UK airport scraps 100ml liquid rule with new scanners
That wouldn’t matter at all if not for the locking down the cockpit.
trasz3··on Tell HN: MailChimp blacklists your IP if you open the browser's dev tools
Company in spam sending business does other unethical things, how surprising.
trasz3··on The cloud backlash has begun: Why big data is pulling compute back on premises
>all code in a single process

Can you give some example of that being the case?

trasz3··on Zippyshare quits after 17 years, 45M visits per month makes no money
I’m sorry, it appears ignoring problems specific to some flyover states in my follow up comment was a bit too subtle.
trasz3··on OpenAI CEO warns that GPT-4 could be misused for nefarious purposes
>I don't think that is going to be the case, more people today believe outright lies than just a few years ago.

Vastly fewer people believe in outright lies now than a couple of decades ago. Fringe theories of all kinds used to be commonly accepted, much more than they are now. Religiously motivated homophobia is a good example. And I’d claim that making it easier to spread falsehoods made it so, by training people to be less naive.

trasz3··on Supreme Court asked to strike down immunity for police who brutally beat student
In a properly working law system those officers getting shot and killed by bystanders could solve the problem by making the police think twice. Of course it won’t work in this case.
trasz3··on OpenAI CEO warns that GPT-4 could be misused for nefarious purposes
States and companies have been successfully creating fiction masquerading as reality for centuries. The only thing AI can change here is it makes it more commonly available. And that might end up reducing the effectiveness of this manipulation by raising people’s awareness.
trasz3··on Zippyshare quits after 17 years, 45M visits per month makes no money
Erm, no. https://www.speedtest.net/global-index; eg the average in Beijing is 177Mbps.

What I was thinking of is hosting for yourself; ie there would be no uploads from outside, only downloads.
trasz3··on Amazon to lay off 9,000 more workers after earlier cuts
It would work smoothly in a democracy, where the “mob” can vote the private owners out.

Of course it won’t work in a fake democracy where corporations are allowed to buy politicians.

trasz3··on Amazon to lay off 9,000 more workers after earlier cuts
“Downtime” is a meaningless metric. Actually working is what matters. And Meet just broke for me two weeks ago; the video didn’t work. Doesn’t matter it was technically “up”.
trasz3··on Zippyshare quits after 17 years, 45M visits per month makes no money
Then those homes might still use a centralized solution instead, with everyone else using a better one.
trasz3··on ASML export ban will hurt Netherlands relationship with China, ambassador warns
Oh, another “China bad” shill.
trasz3··on Amazon to lay off 9,000 more workers after earlier cuts
Outsourcing is less amusing when you realize that the whole cloud industry is a kind of offsourcing.
trasz3··on Zippyshare quits after 17 years, 45M visits per month makes no money
It’s a bit sad that in 2023, with dirt cheap SSDs and gigabit internet at home, we still default to using some third party hosting for transferring files.

>Sometimes I feel guilty about using an ad blocker on sites I like

Put it differently, sometimes you feel guilty about not allowing the sites you like to abuse your computer.

That feeling doesn’t seem healthy to me, tbh.

trasz3··on Ask HN: Why do many CS graduates lack foundational knowledge?
Ah, yes, “normies can’t code”. It’s not a polite thing to say, even if (somewhat) true, and it’s also not very useful, given they are the vast majority of people.
trasz3··on ASML export ban will hurt Netherlands relationship with China, ambassador warns
It also forces China to develop its own competitor to ASML, which will eventually drive them out of the market.
trasz3··on Who is still inside the metaverse?
I’d say PSVR did quite well. Your examples above - from FB or Google - failed for the same reason everything else they try ends in failure - it’s a problem with those corporations and their “engineering culture”, not with VR.
