traek··on Sunsetting Hire
This makes sense, Hire was born out of Bebop (founded by Diane Greene, former VMware founder/CEO).

Google acquihired Bebop to get Diane Greene as head of Google Cloud (which is why this product was lumped under their cloud division), but she left Google earlier this year. No reason for Google to keep it running now.

traek··on No More Cheap Shipping for Chinese Sellers
It's happening because many Americans don't see the value in subsidizing electronics hobbyists.

It won't hurt robotics or drones companies, that's pure fearmongering. No business is having circuit boards shipped via ePacket.

traek··on Software was eating the world – now landlords are eating everything

traek··on WeWork Isn’t a Tech Company
Nothing I can find indicates that Narrator "supports" WeWork or has WeWork as a client, only that Narrator's founding team all used to work at WeWork [0].

traek··on Facebook collected and transcribed users’ audio without permission
The article explicitly says it was opt-in. How could that be "due to it being opt out"?
traek··on Google to Offer a Best Price Guarantee on Certain Flights
You’re wrong, it’s possible. [0]

traek··on FedEx Ends Ground-Delivery Deal with Amazon
And if it happens often enough you'll get banned from Amazon for being an unprofitable customer.
traek··on Vahan (YC S19) is helping low-skilled workers in India find jobs on WhatsApp
Yes, via the WhatsApp Business API explicitly mentioned in the article.
traek··on Meal timing strategies appear to lower appetite, improve fat burning
You missed it, right in the abstract :-)

> Methods

> Eleven adults with overweight practiced both early time‐restricted feeding (eTRF) (eating from 8 am to 2 pm) and a control schedule (eating from 8 am to 8 pm) for 4 days each.

traek··on Meal timing strategies appear to lower appetite, improve fat burning
It’s still a control, just not blinded to the participants (which, yes, can result in bias).
traek··on Google Cloud's run rate is now over $8B

traek··on Amazon workers launch protests on Prime Day
Amazon is absolutely not a monopsony for unskilled labor, or even for warehouse labor. UPS and FedEx each have roughly the same number of employees as Amazon. Walmart has more than double.
traek··on Hospitals Block ‘Surprise Billing’ Measure
> Some prurient examples

Not sure these are "prurient". You may mean salient.

traek··on Fed Chair Jerome Powell Has ‘Serious Concerns’ with Facebook Libra Proposal
This is how every bank works.
traek··on Facebook reveals its cryptocurrency Libra
If you can come up with a scientifically falsifiable theory on the effectiveness of government regulation, there’s a Nobel Prize waiting for you. It’s hard for a lot of reasons, including that it’s almost impossible to create a true test and control treatment.

Macroeconomic theory relies on a lot of spherical cows. In theory I don’t disagree with you, but in practice we don’t have the tools (yet) to do this type of economics in a scientific/falsifiable way.

traek··on Brave Improves Its Ad-Blocker Performance with New Engine in Rust
Brave is a private, for-profit company that has raised $42 million in venture funding—out of curiosity why do you bother doing free work for them in your spare time?
traek··on Facebook reveals its cryptocurrency Libra
Many people feel the solution to bad products is making better competing products rather than adding government regulation.
traek··on Populists prefer TV to online news, but are sticking to Facebook as others leave
I don't see mention of it in the article but Leftbook (a subculture of left-leaning Facebook groups) is a major reason why leftists continue to use Facebook.
traek··on Joyent Public Cloud EOL
Joyent created Node.js
traek··on Amazon Is Poised to Unleash a Purge of Small Wholesale Suppliers
> USPS Priority Mail for $9.99

Priority Mail != Media Mail

traek··on Ask HN: How close together are your bus stops?
> I know how the ridership is measured. I’m not sure what your point was.

Probably that it's inaccurate for you to say "the 4.5 million people who use the 28th Street stop" because that number is ridership, not people.

traek··on DeleteFB: Selenium script to delete all of your Facebook wall posts
> I'd be slightly more confident (slightly) that editing the post might cause the core data in the db to be updated

I'd be much less confident, considering that they explicitly save and make public post's edit history.

traek··on Treat Facebook Like Big Tobacco
> spying on teens

Worth noting that "the app was targeted to users ages 13 to 35 (5 percent of whom were teenagers)." [0]

Google had a similar app. I don't think that makes Facebook's app better, but it's interesting how the media reports on the Facebook app and not the Google one.

traek··on Senior Developers Are Getting Rejected for Jobs
> any resumes that don't have some sort of CS or programming on them

> I have a degree in physics and 20 years of programming

Depends, do you mention your 20 years of programming on your resume?

traek··on The Maker of Gore-Tex Is Experimenting With an Artificial Cornea
Why CDC and NIH instead of the EPA?
traek··on Proteins central to the pathology of Alzheimer’s disease act as prions – study
Sure, but this particular study came out of the lab of the Nobel-prize-winning scientist who literally discovered prions. I think it's at least worthy of discussion.
traek··on Facebook Expects to Be Fined Up to $5B by FTC Over Privacy Issues
> Facebook is paying billions because they made a bad decision when choosing to grant access to data for research

For clarity, Facebook didn't "choose to grant access to data" specifically to Cambridge Analytica. It used to be the case that Facebook's API would let the client app see all the information a FB user could see once they authorized it, including information about their friends. That's what CA exploited.

traek··on Facebook Expects to Be Fined Up to $5B by FTC Over Privacy Issues
> Facebook earned about $172 billion since 2013.

No, they didn't, it's around $56.3 billion [0].
