tppiotrowski··on Study Finds Microplastics in Nearly 90% of Proteins Sampled
I wonder how much of this stuff we inhale from our dryer exhaust when washing outdoor/athletic wear? I used the lint from my dryer as a fire-starter once and it definitely smelled like burning plastic.
tppiotrowski··on Study Finds Microplastics in Nearly 90% of Proteins Sampled
I think of tires as being made of rubber. Where does the plastic come from?
tppiotrowski··on Americans Are Skipping Doctor Visits Due to Costs
I had a virtual care plan from Kaiser Permanente. What I liked:

- you can email a photo to the dermatologist and get a diagnosis for free. I used this for moles and rashes. Saved me a visit and $$

- you can email the doctor for free and chat with a nurse for free and if they refer you for labs or vaccines you just go directly to the lab and get your results online. No time with doctor required.

I am young and have no major health issues. I found this a drastic improvement over going to see a doctor in person, being told to take Tylenol + rest then getting a $700 bill for that advice.

tppiotrowski··on Airlines will make $118B in extra fees
I agree. Ticketmaster, AirBnB, and other services with mandatory fees that are known but not shown until checkout should be regulated but it won't happen.

Just like the USA is the only country in the world that doesn't include sales tax on sticker prices (because it makes things seem more expensive)

tppiotrowski··on Defence against scientific fraud: a proposal for a new MSc course
> Some people might not see a difference between bias and fraud, but I personally do. I think of fraud as a very intentional deception, straight up falsifying numbers in a conscious attempt to deceive.

Lets say you do three runs of the same psychology experiment and only publish the results from the one where results are most significant. I think most researchers would not consider this fraud. You are publishing data that's absolutely true. It's the selective cherry picking of data in order to produce novel results that's rotting the field.

This is how I think researchers can sleep sound at night while faith in science continues to erode.

tppiotrowski··on Australia's overuse of antibiotics driving rate of drug-resistant infections
I took 1000mg of amoxicillin twice a day for about 6 months. I was terrified that it would destroy my gut flora and I would contract cdiff but in the end I didn't notice any adverse effects. Many people take yogurt with antibiotics but I didn't do that nor take probiotics.

Walking out of the pharmacy with 8 boxes of antibiotics at a time was a fun experience. I can't remember but in Australia I think it was less than $5 a box without insurance.

tppiotrowski··on Meta allows ads saying 2020 election was rigged on Facebook and Instagram
I sense a learned helplessness when it comes to these topics. To say that Meta should police these posts hints at the fact that there is no hope for rhetoric or persuasion and that people are not rational.

Have we completely given up on making a good counter argument instead of disallowing things to be said in the first place?

Suppressing speech has downsides (loss of trust, centralization). Allowing speech also has downsides (misinformation, instigation, hate). How do we decide which is the way forward?

tppiotrowski··on Australia's overuse of antibiotics driving rate of drug-resistant infections
I thought the GPs were just fine but it's true that they do offer antibiotics almost every time you have a cold. In the US, you would demand them from your doctor and they would say no.

Whether it was placebo or not, it did usually seem to make me feel better.

tppiotrowski··on Current thoughts on social media
I wonder if the BBB can be leveraged. I can't find Meta on there but I did find an Instagram entry and they have a rating of F [1] Maybe we should post the BBB page for Meta to the front page of HN and let people voice their frustrations?

tppiotrowski··on Current thoughts on social media
Just wait until your account gets hacked and you realize there's a bug with the "click here if you didn't make this change" links in the security email making it impossible to get your account back.

Then navigate to Facebook.com/hacked as directed by the help docs and have it reject any attempt to recover your account because it only works with currently used email addresses and phone numbers which the hacker has removed and updated to a value which you cannot know.

Does anyone work at FB or knows if they have a public facing bug tracker or ability to contact their developers? This is a pretty bad bug.

tppiotrowski··on Cloudflare API Down
You're right. The email yesterday was that the voluntary opt in period to the new pricing was starting. Everyone will be switched over on March 1st.
tppiotrowski··on Yann LeCun: AI one-percenters seizing power forever is real doomsday scenario
I don't know enough about the unabomber but from what I heard he wasn't trying doomsday stuff. Seemed like more targeted assassinations at certain individuals. Feel free to enlighten me though...
tppiotrowski··on Cloudflare API Down
That was yesterday. They announced pricing changes for Cloudflare workers. I think it won't affect me but heavy workloads will have to pay more. They used to charge a flat fee but now are moving to $/CPU time.

Overall I still love Cloudflare and run all my backend stuff there. It just feels simpler and cleaner than AWS but it's slowly starting to get cluttered as more features are released.

tppiotrowski··on Cloudflare API Down
Bad timing: quarterly earnings call is this afternoon.
tppiotrowski··on Yann LeCun: AI one-percenters seizing power forever is real doomsday scenario
The people who can do doomsday level harm need to complete a level of education that makes them smart enough and gives them time to consider the implications of their actions. They have a certain level of maturity before they can strike and this maturity makes them understand the gravity of their actions. Also, by this point they are probably set financially due to their education and not upset with the world (possibly the case for you and friends)

Then there are the script kiddies that find a tool online that someone smarter than them wrote and deploy it to wreak havoc. The script kiddies are the people I worry about. They don't have the maturity of doing the work and the emotional stability of older age and giving them something powerful through AI worries me.

Theorem: by the time someone reaches the intelligence level required to annihilate the world they can comprehend the implications of their actions.

tppiotrowski··on Show HN: Instant API – Build type-safe web APIs with JavaScript
I was looking at ChatGPT plugins today and they use the OpenAPI convention. Is it called OpenAPI because it was created by "Open"AI or it's something completely independent of OpenAI that they chose to adopt?
tppiotrowski··on Protomaps – A free and open source map of the world
Cloudflare: 100GB hosting is $1 and $.36 for 10 million requests.

If you read the Protomaps docs it explains how to cache the requests on Cloudflare CDN so you only have to pay for each tile request once per cache period. It's quite cheap.

Edit: previous submission title for Protomaps: Serverless maps at 1/700 the cost of Google Maps API

tppiotrowski··on Protomaps – A free and open source map of the world
Protomaps generates daily world files I believe [1] but I haven't confirmed that they're used by the download tool yet. In theory you can download the data everyday to pick up updates.

[1] https://maps.protomaps.com/builds/

Edit: re-reading top comment it looks like they're using a daily file so you'd just have to create a cron job

tppiotrowski··on Binance US No Longer Allows USD Withdrawal for Users
You often have to declare more than $10K of cash when traveling so cash makes it hard to flee your crimes.
tppiotrowski··on First Off-Road Solar SUV Just Drove Across Morocco Powered Only by the Sun
I don't know if it's "street legal" to drive without windows but I want to see a car that covers the windows in solar panels and projects the road on a monitor inside using external cameras. Would also help with heat buildup in the cabin and skin cancer rates for long distance haulers.
tppiotrowski··on Ask HN: How do you get out of a rut?
Are you doing repetitive work? Can you take a step back and ask how you could automate or make mundane tasks take less time?

I often get exhausted when I know it takes 20 minutes of busy work (manual testing, spinning up environment, opening IDE, updating tickets, etc) to commit a single line of code. Don't try to power through this or you'll burn out eventually. Try to optimize time for tasks you enjoy.

tppiotrowski··on A real-time 3D digital map of Tokyo's public transport system
Thanks for the shoutout. Shademap is actually really popular with the Japanese and a subset of them use it to plan photography of...trains [1]. It's a fascinating subculture I didn't even know existed.

tppiotrowski··on Yet another E-Ink weather display – but with Rust
What is the Rust used for here? Do you manually write x,y pixels to these devices?

Can you use another program to rasterize a two tone bitmap image with the appropriate dimensions and then pass it to the display controller without needing to write any software?

tppiotrowski··on Investigation: 78% of carbon offset projects globally are “likely junk“
Carbon sequestration doesn't require deep understanding of chemistry or physics. It can be understood by politicians, CEOs, economists and the general public.

If we could effectively communicate the science we could support/fund more scientific solutions. However, money rots science too.

tppiotrowski··on macOS Sonoma is available today
No need for a testing matrix (Does version X of app work with version Y of MacOS)?

Not needing to bundle dependencies that you know are provided by your OS environment?

Easy to investigate and fix bugs (You don't need a VM of every MacOS version on your machine)?

tppiotrowski··on WebGL Broken in iOS17: Webglcontextlost
Spent the morning wrestling with this bug. It affects iOS17 and 17.0.1 on my iPhone 12 (not sure about other models). It appears to be fixed on iOS17.0.1 on my iPad. I've seen reports that it occurs on iOS16.7 as well.

Safari fires off a webglcontextlost event. WebGL test pages [1][2] fail to render.

[1] https://get.webgl.org/

[2] https://get.webgl.org/webgl2/

Edit: Temporary workaround is to Add to Home Screen you webpage. The full screen web app wrapper does not lose context like Safari does.

tppiotrowski··on Organic Maps: An open-source maps app that doesn't suck
Do the big players provide you simple downloads of entire countries in under 1GB, offline search and routing?

It's not the most complete data but it's by far the fastest mapping app when using offline data. Most intuitive point and click routing. Elevation data. Ability to load GPX/KML if you hike. And it will blow your mind how much is contained in the offline data: wikipedia articles, open/close times, etc
