tppiotrowski··on Eggs US – Price – Chart
Why does this mostly affect the US? I've been abroad most of the year and eggs don't seem overly expensive.
tppiotrowski··on Web page annoyances that I don't inflict on you
Another one: No "Sign in with your Google account" popup covering the upper right corner of the page
tppiotrowski··on Combining 15s interval whole-sky-camera photos to form a 4y spanning keogram
You can train ML to recognize vegetation in satellite photos and further train it to estimate its height +/-3 meters

tppiotrowski··on US newspapers are deleting old crime stories, offering subjects a 'clean slate'
The fact that it's self reported makes me wonder how close to the actual number it is. Also, how did they choose their sample.

tppiotrowski··on Combining 15s interval whole-sky-camera photos to form a 4y spanning keogram
True. Argentina doesn't have DST and I just realized living in the northern hemisphere made me miss the fact that the sunlight hours chart is concave in the south

tppiotrowski··on Combining 15s interval whole-sky-camera photos to form a 4y spanning keogram
I generate these type of charts [1] focused on the daylight hours so it was a surprise to see a concave shape instead of a convex one. Awesome way to validate these computer generated charts with captured physical data.

tppiotrowski··on Satellite powered estimation of global solar potential
Yes. There are planet wide DEM (Digital Elevation Model) datasets which record ground level elevations but no planet wide set for DSM which includes built structures and vegetation.
tppiotrowski··on Satellite powered estimation of global solar potential
As someone who has researched DSM availability across the globe, Google's Solar API is a top contender. Other option is government LiDAR surveys but the coverage, file formats, projections, etc are all fragmented. I think it would be great for the mapping community to create a world wide DSM map tile dataset similar to the ground elevation tile dataset that contour lines and 3D terrain views are generated from. Maybe someone is already working on this?

In the article they show areas where their approach can generate DSM although this is just the potential areas and not the areas where data is already available. :(

tppiotrowski··on Legal fights over kei trucks in the U.S.
Sounds incorrect. I think the insurance rate is based on the value of the vehicle and SUVs and trucks are much more expensive than compacts and sedans.
tppiotrowski··on An Italian town that built its own sun (2021)
Lighting conditions seem to check out:

tppiotrowski··on William James and the philosophy of pragmatism (2018)
> In “The Gospel of Relaxation,” James applies psychological insights to everyday concerns. Limit introspection: don’t become a prisoner of morbid feelings. To feel brave, act brave. To become cheerful, smile and laugh.

Today known as "fake it till you make it"

Or my personal version: "Action creates motivation, not the other way around"

tppiotrowski··on Grab built its own map in Southeast Asia, and is now going after Google
I'm currently in Pokara, Nepal and Google maps has definitely hallucinated a lot of streets that don't exist (computer vision false positives I presume) This makes Google useless for routing because it sends you into dead end alleys and driveways it thinks cross through to the next road.

Organic Maps (OSM client) on the other hand is much more accurate and supports offline routing.

tppiotrowski··on Mom jailed for letting 10-year-old walk alone to town
This mechanism is the source of fear for foreigners who believe they will be the victims of a mass shooting if they visit the USA.
tppiotrowski··on Toyota to buy clean power from a $1.1B solar farm in Texas
> Compared to what?

My comment was based on 1kW panel on Amazon.com is $500 delivered but there's likely a lot of nuance in quality and lifetime and labor for these projects

tppiotrowski··on Toyota to buy clean power from a $1.1B solar farm in Texas
$1,100,000,000 / 815000 kW = $1350 per kW

Seems kind of expensive at this scale

tppiotrowski··on Fraud, so much fraud
There was a period of time when science was advanced by the aristocrats who were self funded and self motivated.

Once it became a distinguished profession the incentives changed.

"When a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure"

tppiotrowski··on A Uruguayan company teaches people how to turn regular cars into EVs
Can anyone recommend a learning resource or YouTube videos on English? (Autolibre has a course but I believe it's only in Spanish)
tppiotrowski··on We built the city of Colombo in Cities:Skylines
Can you explain the projection issues you faced with the DEM? I thought something like gdal can reproject any data into a standard projection like web Mercator.

tppiotrowski··on US hospital told family their daughter had checked out when in fact she'd died
Personal story:

A couple of years ago I climbed Mt Whitney in California. One of the climbers that day was from the east coast and failed to show up for work a few days later. The family became concerned and called the car rental agency in Las Vegas where he flew to and rented his car. The agency said the car had been returned. After another day of him missing they called the car rental agency again to confirm and once again the agency said the car was in the lot. The next day the rangers found the car was still parked in the Mt Whitney parking lot and search and rescue was finally dispatched.

In this case I believe it didn't make a difference because the climber appeared to die from acute injury on the mountain the day of his climb but in another scenario maybe those 2 days would've been the difference between being rescued or dying from exposure.

tppiotrowski··on Notes on Remitting Stripe Tax to the UK and EU
Thanks!

Lemon Squeezy is exactly what I needed but failed to find the required keywords to make it surface in Google search results.

Ironically they were just acquired by Stripe today. I'll keep this guide up nonetheless in case the fees start to increase in the future.

tppiotrowski··on Identifying Leap Years (2020)
Does a compiler use special cases for division by two (and other integers as well) that it implements as single bitwise operations? This seems like a lot of work to scan through all mathematical operations. Is that why compiling code takes so long sometimes?
tppiotrowski··on Correlation between fecal microplastics and inflammatory bowel disease (2021)
It has to be PVC pipes. Once you cut one with a mitre saw and see all the plastic dust in the pipe that gets washed into the nearest water source

Or the replacement of wool with polyester and nylon over the last 100 years

Tires are a good thing to look into but a lot of things have change drastically in the last 100 years...

tppiotrowski··on Ship Something Every Day
> The satisfaction (and mental benefits) of getting something done

I used to think that motivation would come to me if I just waited long enough but I now believe that action breeds motivation. You need to do something no matter how small and your motivation will benefit from it.

tppiotrowski··on Show HN: Every mountain, building and tree shadow mapped for any date and time
By default the tree shadows appear as they would from an airplane, so you would not see any shadows at noon as the top of the canopy is completely in the sun.

Try changing to "below canopy" in the Settings and you might see the missing shadows.

tppiotrowski··on HumaneAI pin maker selling itself for $1B
> The company was previously valued at $850 million (before the launch of the AI Pin)

Isn't the valuation geared towards making investors whole instead of the actual value of a company? I thought this was standard in the VC world.

tppiotrowski··on Buckets of Parquet Files Are Awful
I've recently played with the Overture Maps datasets which are in .parquet and I agree that there is a learning curve.

One thing that's nice about .parquet is typical Macs come with 128/256GB SSDs and you can query 300GB of parquet in S3 without needing all those files on your local hard drive. Some of these queries are also surprisingly fast but I haven't looked into how it works.

Edit: Having used MySQL and Postgres, I actually think DuckDB is better than either.

tppiotrowski··on Buckets of Parquet Files Are Awful
Can a CSV contain binary? I'm just thinking of the massive file size explosion of stringy'ing integers and floats (like those used for lat/lng coordinates for example)
tppiotrowski··on Show HN: I made a better Perplexity for developers
I use perplexity because it's the best free GPT that is anonymous (no login required)
tppiotrowski··on A fourteen-day free trial ain’t gonna cut it
I think most consumers would agree that this is the fairest model. If I pay for 30 days of Netflix, only charge me for the days I watch so then I feel like I'm using my entire purchase.

The current SaaS model is like going to the store and you can only buy 5 gallons of butter or milk and you have one week to use it. It "feels" like most of your money is being "wasted". At least that's my perception.
