tpmx··on Up to tenth of Amazon shoppers in GB 'bribed' by sellers to offer good review
What the US needs is a great price comparison service. That is how we get by in Sweden before and after Amazon. Google Shopping is not it.

Such a price comparison service needs a large team manually curating categories and most of all: the product metadatas. So much manual work. Yet it all made sense, even in a country of just 10M people. (The company is called Prisjakt and is now starting to go to shit for unrelated reasons.)

tpmx··on Up to tenth of Amazon shoppers in GB 'bribed' by sellers to offer good review
I guess I'm happy to live in a country where Amazon showed up too late (Sweden). Their offering for non-Chinese brands seems like a joke in comparison to the online retail landscape here. It's good for cheap noname (weirdname?) Chinese electronics (think e.g. TPA3116D2-based amplifier boards) though.
tpmx··on Up to tenth of Amazon shoppers in GB 'bribed' by sellers to offer good review
Why doesn't Amazon care?
tpmx··on Passengers in wheelchairs can't use most airplane washrooms. That could change
I guess that essentially means larger restrooms in 'First class' in the US on new 737s/A320s?

will require new single-aisle airplanes to be designed with handicapped-accessible bathrooms

tpmx··on VeroRoute – an open source Veroboard, Perfboard and PCB layout design software
Thanks! Looks like this very specific area needs some open source love though. I'll look into if I think I can contribute here.
tpmx··on 23andMe says user data stolen in credential stuffing attack
Some background for new readers:

The 23andMe founder (and current CEO) Anne Wojcicki is the sister of Susan Wojcicki, until recently a long time Youtube CEO.

Anne is also the ex-wife of Google/Alphabet founder Sergey Brin. Google/Alphabet is also an investor in 23andMe. Youtube is an Alphabet company.

tpmx··on VeroRoute – an open source Veroboard, Perfboard and PCB layout design software
Sort of related question:

Is there a neat way of turning a scan/1-bit bitmap of a PCB design (from e.g. an old magazine or book) into a set of Gerber files that you can have manufactured cheaply?

tpmx··on Did Covid Change How We Dream?
tl;dr: since we tend to dream about current worries: yes.
tpmx··on Booking.com makes a fortune – so why is it leaving its bills to hotels unpaid?
Yeah, that kind of service would have been awesome.
tpmx··on Vivaldi on iOS
Of course it's using WKWebView.
tpmx··on Booking.com makes a fortune – so why is it leaving its bills to hotels unpaid?
That's a great sign your company actually sucks and you should quit. Probably likely: It wasn't actually a high-margin company.
tpmx··on Booking.com makes a fortune – so why is it leaving its bills to hotels unpaid?
I suppose many of us are lucky to work in high-margin software businesses. I spent 15 years often travelling for work (typically very distributed companies) before the pandemic. Four separate companies. Everything paid on my personal CC. I preferred it that way so that I could optimize the flights/etc to make it fit my personal life. Everything reimbursed swiftly with zero questions since I never did anything really stupid. The only real bottleneck was myself; filing all of those damned receipts for every trip.

Having some kind of centralized travel booking service that "took care of everything" would likely have caused me to find another job. For one company I did a monthly 6h travel + a few days of hotel + 6h travel thing for a decade. Not being in total control over that would simply not have been feasible.

I have no idea how people doing a large amount of travel for stereotypical low-margin large companies manage to get by.

tpmx··on iPhone 15 Pro camera issues
That enhancement needs to be off by default. Maybe use an icon of a wizard's hat with along with some stars as the UI to enable it in the camera app?

tpmx··on Lumber prices down 11% YoY
The chart in the article does a nice job at illustrating that prices are roughly speaking back to essentially pre-pandemic levels after giant spikes. This seems healthy to me.
tpmx··on Subroutines: David Bunnell's Newsletter from Inside the PC Industry (1986)
Borland did not die because they ignored the Mac, they died because they tried to transform from being a sub $100 consumer/mass-market product company to an enterprise offering and failed at doing so. The Mac wasn't a factor.

They still would have died when Linux/open source took off though. They didn't own a platform.

tpmx··on Subroutines: David Bunnell's Newsletter from Inside the PC Industry (1986)
It kind of was a piece of shit with that little RAM (128k). That was rectified with the Fat Mac (512k) 8 months later in september of 1984. It was still quite expensive compared to the PC clones that were common by late 1984 though.

There was an interesting dynamic for a while in the 80s between text mode and bitmapped personal computers. Bitmapped computers were generally for companies in design etc, well-todo individuals and academics. To the rest they seemed very nice but frivolous due to the very high cost. That 512k Mac in Sep 1984: US$2,795 (equivalent to $7,870 in 2022).

At the time of the introduction of that first feasible mac you could get a PC 5150 clone with the same amount of RAM and much crappier CGA graphics for half of the price. And then the gap just started getting wider over the next few years.

tpmx··on Mistral releases ‘unmoderated’ chatbot via torrent
Is this the one?

I tried it out in that inline free preview - it didn't impress.

tpmx··on A Bit About Byte Magazine
I agree about the MagPi; it's close. I think it would work great as eh, toilet reading material though. Lots of small stories/projects.
tpmx··on A Bit About Byte Magazine
The German Heise publishing house continues to publish the Byte/PCW-sort-of-like magazine "c't". Useful for keeping any German language skills alive if you're into that.

Judging from the latest cover it's at a ~00s technical level (on a PCW Magazine scale) - and they are diversifing, now including things like heat pumps and smart thermostats, heh:

tpmx··on A Bit About Byte Magazine
Living in Europe (but not in the UK), I have similar nostalgic feelings for the UK magazine Personal Computer World (PCW). The library in the tiny town (5k people) where I grew up somehow had a subscription for PCW in the 80s and 90s. Every month there was a new treasure trove to read. I read it so hard from like 1986 and onwards. (I kind of learned English by reading PCW.)

It's pretty obvious that PCW was modelled after Byte.

Fossil-free is a more relevant metric in general. Since Portugal doesn't have any active commercial nuclear power the two metrics would show the same.

Congrats on the improvements!

Obesity drugmaker’s expansion raises dominance worries for Denmark

Soaring sales for Novo Nordisk’s products mean market capitalisation now exceeds country’s GDP

“The way that we look at it is that in Denmark we have a two-speed economy: the pharmaceutical industry — and the rest,” said Thomas Harr, chief economist at Denmark’s central bank. “The risk is that you think the economy is performing better than it is.”

“Novo is so fantastically successful, and that is great for it and its shareholders. But for Denmark, I worry about what happens if it goes wrong,” said a leading business executive. “Finland ended up with a lost decade when Nokia had its problems.”

tpmx··on Drinking diet sodas daily during pregnancy linked to autism in male offspring
It's published in Nutrients.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MDPI#Resignations_of_editors

In August 2018, 10 senior editors (including the editor-in-chief) of the journal Nutrients resigned, alleging that MDPI forced the replacement of the editor-in-chief because of his high editorial standards and for resisting pressure to "accept manuscripts of mediocre quality and importance.
