I think there is a market in this, and I don't think ad-words is the best sales model here. Maybe investor 1 has a point. Just thoughts of a stranger on the Internet :) Are there other technical debt issues going on (either in your sw stack or the hw inventory you have)?
Lets turn it around. If I have my kid on the seat behind you (paid full price for kids over 2 .. they can do what they want) and they kick your seat for the entire duration of the flight, you should have bought your seat and the one behind you if YOU did not want to be in that situation :)
You might be a youngin ... these cramped seats are a modern phenomenon. Did you know air travel was a highly regulated thing? Airlines squeezed every drop of efficiency they could post 9-11 ... they did it and no one complained because people wanted to support them (patriotic reasons and general decency). The airlines took it too far with all these charges, cramped seats, etc. They also implemented dynamic pricing and demand management which I think is a great evil as a consumer.
I never recline (unless there is an empty seat behind me) and firmly believe people who do are inconsiderate humans. Airline seats have shrunk to the point that people are wondering about medical issues due to restricted space.
Curious how you decided to trust a particular escrow service. With Coinbase, the leap of faith one could possibly make was that they were associated with YC (gave them credibility in my books at least).
I am very genuinely curious how people bought bitcoin before coinbase? There was that vending machine. Or you could mine it. But how did regular folks do it?
Agreed. If you look at A11, a huge portion of the chip is cache. 8MB L2 IIRC. The belief is that they (Apple) take a hit on the CPU and make it up in the full device. Can't do that if you don't make the full device.
What paper do you mean for Bitcoin? The original white paper from Satoshi? I loved the bit torrent paper. I'd add the paper on HMMs and NFS. My list of favorite papers :) The oldies used to be better. Kinda sad really.
I'm curious about the demography for this event ... do you have sense for the attendees? Would be genuinely interested in what you get out of it. I've never been and am really curious what draws such large crowds.
I do distributed computing and feel as equally dark about my prospects as the OP. You use TensorFlow, Tensor Flow Serving and call it a day? Compared to the advances in ML, systems is pretty well-mined out. The biggest excitements in the last 5 years were Docker and Kubernetes. There was a small blip of consensus systems around the time Docker was being rolled into production. I feel kinda depressed :'(
I'm a low-level systems person (writes the libraries you speak of). Just complaining that it is a pain to get all the details. This also hinders optimization/scalability analysis.
I've looked at WebRTC as well, and it is a mess. Consider websockets as a protocol. So much cleaner and clearer. With WebRTC, you gotta know/implement SIP, RTP, RTSP, RTCP????
Haha .. that has a name: MVP - minimal viable publication. I wouldn't feel bad about it. The main suggestion I'd give my younger self is to build expertise on a challenging topic. Hinton is a good example btw. He worked on Neural networks when it was a pariah topic. Look at him now. Of course, you can pick the wrong topic and get screwed (like the majority of folks) :-p
I agree with this comment. If you are near the end, just finish and get done with the PhD. Also .. take it from someone who is more than a decade into their professional career in CS research. Things change. I used to be able to crank out papers easily. Then, I got older and so did the field. All the easy stuff was gone. It is much harder to publish in my particular sub-field now. I tried expanding to include other related areas but it is also tough. I kinda wonder at what point to throw in the towel.
I don't know if this is a Canada thing or not. I too am worried that we (Canada) seem to have declared a war on self-employed people (latest tax plan defn doesn't make it any easier) and at the same time, some big names in retail have gone away (Sears, Target, a whole bunch of others). Where are all these unemployed people going into?
Agreed. I'd also like to point out that the review process itself is pretty broken. People sometimes behave like sociopaths (e.g. torpedo a paper that is competing with your work), personal grudges etc.
Sorry. Your info doesn't match the same reality I live in. As the parent said, sales went down (don't know about mix). Prices for detached homes have not. We were seriously putting offers in March and got outbid for INSANE sums. e.g. 720K offer in Milton .. property went for 100K over. In Mississauga, homes listed for 850K went for 950K-1million. I am looking at data now and it has slowed but not gone down yet.
Exactly. In a US 30 year mortgage, it is reasonable to expect a borrower to pay it off. In a 5 year mortgage, you will typically refinance after 5 years (unless you hit the jackpot in the interim).
Toronto's property market is insane. I am still seeing condos (e.g. Gibson near North York center) being priced at 600K+ for 1+1 and larger units well over 1 million dollars. Not sure who can afford this.
Places as far as Vaughan and Milton are expensive. We're talking decent detached houses (slightly above starter home) for over 1 million.
I want to give a shout out to a charity called "Room to read". There is a book about the founder's story .. he was one of us (a tech leader at Microsoft). His book and story touched me deeply.
Is there an open source NLP engine out there? I've been trying to learn this area and there are so many "pot holes" and wrong paths ... I've looked at OWL/Sparql, Graph DBs, logic programming, rule based systems. I feel like I'm dancing around the real topic and I don't know what "it" is :'(
I'm intrigued ... can you elaborate on the wow factor beyond REST that you see in GraphQL? When I looked at it in the past, it seems to make sense for things that could be represented by graph (e.g. FB's social graph), and graphql allowed you to run complex operations in the backend without fetching each individual node on the client. I clearly missed something?
Very good points. In complex financial transactions (at least within regulatory domains), my understanding is that rollbacks can and do happen. I initially thought across borders/regulatory domains, blockchain will shine. I haven't seen a killer application just yet. It is a bit frustrating because the tech is indeed interesting .. we just don't have multi-billion dollar real (as opposed to imagined) use-cases beyond the distributed ledger.
That's what I thought. However, this article (http://lifehacker.com/how-to-install-linux-on-a-chromebook-a...) mentions crouton and being able to run Ubuntu. For instance, can I use apt-get, containers, etc.? Seems like there are two "solutions" .. one is to reboot into an open Linux system and the other is a more loose chromeOS?
