tossaccount123··on U.S. Accuses Huawei of Stealing Trade Secrets, Defrauding Banks
There wasn't a WTO and there weren't international trades laws, in the 1800s. Even then he wasn't working as an arm of the US government to deliberately steal IP to surpass the British empire technologically, which is what the Chinese are currently doing
tossaccount123··on A Tiny Screw Shows Why iPhones Won’t Be ‘Assembled in U.S.A.’
>We're still in Iraq and Afghanistan to some extent all these years later

Only because the US isn't willing to use Mongol tactics to win. US could end it tomorrow if we said we'd nuke any village found to be working with the Taliban or use our numerous chemical and biological weapons to wipe out the native population

Believing in basic human rights is why the US is still in the middle east

tossaccount123··on A Tiny Screw Shows Why iPhones Won’t Be ‘Assembled in U.S.A.’
China has no blue water Navy and can't feed it's own population without importing billions in food.

US would blockade Brazil and stop exports of soy and corn to China. China would starve within months if not weeks

China has zero force projection ability

tossaccount123··on A Tiny Screw Shows Why iPhones Won’t Be ‘Assembled in U.S.A.’
That was the promise to americans when we signed all these trade deals

The reality is that the rich simply pocketed the labor arbitrage as profit rather than passing the savings on to consumers, they have 0 incentive not to because their is no punishment for doing so. That's why corporate profits and income inequality the highest in decades.

tossaccount123··on Party is over for dirt-cheap solar panels, says China executive
That steel is only cheap short term. Once China has a monopoly they can charge whatever they want. The only reason Chinese steel is cheaper is because it's lower quality and their government subsidizes it with long term strategic intent
tossaccount123··on Party is over for dirt-cheap solar panels, says China executive
explain how China is the world's fastest growing economy and has the fastest growing living standards while being one of, if not the most protectionist countries on earth?

According to most economists and their textbooks their growth should be terrible because they are so anti free trade

The only people who benefit from low tariffs are the rich, who can then outsource production and ship goods back into the country with no consequences. That's why income inequality has skyrocketed in the last few decades. The supposed savings of outsourcing weren't passed back to consumers, it was pocketed by the rich

tossaccount123··on Party is over for dirt-cheap solar panels, says China executive
no shit, this is what everybody with a brain has warned about

China's MO is to subsidize Chinese businesses, restrict foreign competition internally, and steal foreign companies IP until they are bankrupt, while simultaneously being allowed to export their goods to those same countries with no penalty. Then they jack up the prices when all the competition is gone

Everybody criticized Trump for the steel and solar tariffs because they don't think beyond next quarter earnings report. What happens in 20 years when China has a monopoly on steel, solar, and other key industries and they decide to jack up prices? The rest of the world won't be able to do anything about it because they are junkies and China is the supplier

tossaccount123··on US shutdown: Flight delays caused by staff shortages
There's multiple organizations offering 0% interest loans because the backpay is guaranteed by the US federal government. Not ideal but there really shouldn't be any government workers worried about paying their bills
tossaccount123··on Hemingway’s World War I savior is anonymous no more
There was a quote by a British general or high ranking officer saying how depressed he was that Britian's next generation of poets, scientists, mathematicians, etc were buried in Western Europe
tossaccount123··on Amazon Ruined Online Shopping
legally every Amazon warehouse should be seized by the Feds for knowingly helping to ship counterfeit goods across state lines. That's what happens to other retailers who do this[1].

Luckily, Bezos owns the Washington Post, has a 600 million dollar contract with the CIA, and is close to signing a 10 billion dollar contract with the Department of Defense. The new HQ in DC probably helps grease those hands as well

tossaccount123··on Nike’s auto-laced future
60 million in funding for nuclear fusion vs 2 trillion in spending on welfare and entitlements annually

Bread and circus rather than progress is the establishments top priority

The tragedy is that nearly all of the problems we currently face would already be solved if we just invested in our future. NASA used to get 4.5% of our federal budget invested in it, now it's .3%. We used to invest $3 into research or infrastructure for every $1 in entitlements, now we spend $5 in entitlements for every 1$ invested in our future.

tossaccount123··on The Next American Car Recession Has Already Started
the type of person to complain about SUVs online are mostly young urban residents who don't have kids and probably have access to public transport. Not exactly representative of the world at large
tossaccount123··on A Colombian I.T. Guy Helped U.S. Authorities Take Down El Chapo
Why settle for hollywood shit? LiveLeak has the real stuff

Personal favorites being them cutting a rival cartel members leg off and beating him to death with his own leg, chainsaw execution, or cutting out and holding a guys beating heart in front of his face

Don't bury your head in the sand, we live in a cruel world

tossaccount123··on Government shutdown: TLS certificates not renewed, many websites are down
Trump is asking for less than 1/1000 of our annual budget for border security. We spend 10x that on foreign aid annually. This entire thing is political BS over what amounts to a rounding error while congress almost unanimously approved $38 billion in money for Israel
tossaccount123··on Startups Rejecting Venture Capital
You're operating under the assumption that most people have their choice of where to work. If you can work at Google or Facebook, then sure, don't go the startup route

On the other hand if you didn't go to an Ivy league you can prove yourself at a startup or advance your career faster before transitioning to a bigger company at a better position

tossaccount123··on How much Americans make in wages
globalization only benefits the rich. They can arbitrage labor and then keep the difference in profit. The supposed lowering of cost to make up for job loss and wage reduction didn't happen
tossaccount123··on Anonymous Google Employees Voted Arms Control Persons of the Year
You do realize Larry and Sergey's initial funding to create a search engine came from DARPA, a military program, right?
tossaccount123··on Anonymous Google Employees Voted Arms Control Persons of the Year
Google is actively helping the Chinese military by opening their AI center in China. Every bit of the IP they develop in China will be in the hands of the government and thus weaponized by the Chinese military. Yet I haven't heard a peep of protest from the same people who criticized project Maven

tossaccount123··on Immigration in American Economic History (2017) [pdf]
>decline in union membership since it is only through collective bargaining

because illegal immigration destroys any negotiating power of unions. You can't go on strike when there are millions of illegals that will take that job

tossaccount123··on Immigration in American Economic History (2017) [pdf]
labor doesn't exist in vacuum either, low skill immigration lowers wages up the chain. In the past people could earn a good living right out of high school. Now more people have to take out loans, go to college, and then there's more people competing for those "high-skill" jobs, plus a mountain of debt on their backs

I know older people who made $30/hr out of high school at local factories with full benefits thanks to unions in the 70s and 80s. Illegal immigration was used to break those unions and today those jobs pay $10-15/hr with no benefits

tossaccount123··on 75% of med students are on antidepressants, stimulants, or both? (2017)
Anything in the medical field would have to be extensively tested, this isn't a web app where "move fast and break things" applies

and it would primarily be used with routine surgeries and would default to human intervention under uncertainty. Most of these surgeries are basically identical and the AI could improve by sharing data with all surgeries performed around the world. Not to mention how bad humans are at surgery, especially when fatigued.

AI is the only way to fix healthcare, a doctor/surgeon can work effectively only a few hours a day and takes nearly 30 years to educate from childhood. An AI could do surgery and diagnose patients nearly 24/7, 7 days a week.

tossaccount123··on 75% of med students are on antidepressants, stimulants, or both? (2017)
I think the medical field will be one that benefits most from AI. Routine surgeries will be able to be done by medical robots like those being developed at Cal Berkeley with human supervision if something unexpected comes up

This will shift the supply and demand equation and lower medical costs and make life easier for doctors

tossaccount123··on Uncaptcha2: Defeat ReCaptcha with Google Speech2Text
Google doesn't care, they just want free training data. The team behind uncaptcha even gave them 6 months notice and Google still did nothing

their own sites are protected by additional measures to detect bots like monitoring mouse movement

tossaccount123··on 23andMe has signed a $300M deal with GlaxoSmithKline

Why are people surprised they would abuse your data for profit?

tossaccount123··on Google shifted $23B to tax haven Bermuda in 2017
written deductions in the tax code vs legal loophole that's being made illegal in many countries

I never argued it was illegal, I'm saying it's not ethical

tossaccount123··on U.S. issues China travel advisory amid increased tensions
prison =/= forced labor camp for political prisoners or Muslims

I have yet to see Trump arrest the hundreds of thousands of people who marched against him and send them to perform slave labor in Alaska. Or arrest members of the media or opposing political parties who criticize him

tossaccount123··on Google shifted $23B to tax haven Bermuda in 2017
>It's unclear why that money would be owed to the US ethically

The company is headquartered there, the IP was developed there, the founders were educated there, the core technology that made their company possible was funded by US tax payers, the safe environment that makes business possible is secured by police and military funded by US tax payers, etc

tossaccount123··on Google shifted $23B to tax haven Bermuda in 2017
There's a world of difference between taking a tax deduction and actively setting up shell corporations to dodge taxes

Google could not pay taxes by giving their employees raises or bonuses, invest in infrastructure, donate it to charity, etc.Instead they stash it in the Caribbean.

I wouldn't care but their executives actively push a political agenda not inline with their actions which makes them rampaging hypocrites and thus open for criticism

tossaccount123··on Ray Kurzweil 2019 Predictions
can we advance far enough to get an understanding of our biology to augment it?

"AI" in its current form is like a child trying to make a car through imitation

I think we'll have to CRISPR ourselves smarter before we can really go full cybernetic augmentation
