toshk··on Hmsklt – App to help friends form deeper relationships
It seems to me that we the strongest bonds are formed out of necessity.

We bond with people in difficult situations when we need protections and are able to protect.

I've noticed friends who are born in places like South Africa, or Russia are much intenser with friendships.

My theory is that they really have to trust eachother because they have no trust in the system.

Where I grew up, trust in system is strong and it seems people don't need to rely on eachother.

It's not so simple, and of course most people still bond deeply depending on personality and upbringing. But it's why I think most Western societies are so individual.

toshk··on Google, Apple remove Navalny app from stores as Russian elections begin
Interesting they made an app in the first place, can they move the activity to a website, maybe multiple domains?
toshk··on Google, Apple remove Navalny app from stores as Russian elections begin
Of course, these are free countries both formally and informally (except for certain areas like Belarus and Krim)
toshk··on Uber must employ its drivers, Dutch court rules
Social security is just a hole in the Dutch law, freelancers should just also start paying social security. Like they do for instance in Spain, then they can also get unemployment money etc.

The effect of this will be temporary 0 hour contract and you create exactly the same situation with less flexibility for the employee and a limit of three contracts of a year.

toshk··on Why did the web take over desktop and not mobile?
Its not sufficient of an explanation.

For desktop browsers there are also no application launch icons.

Probably has most to do with the limits of the UX of a phone. Pulling up a browser and typing in a url, hitting autocomplete is done in 2 seconds. On mobile everything is so much more painful, a lot more desire for one click wonder buttons

toshk··on TikTok overtakes YouTube for average watch time in US and UK
To be fair, Youtube VS TikTok is mostly the wrong comparison.

Tiktok is mostly competing with the Insta/Facebook I need distraction so I'll let myself be numbed with external impulses as fast as I can get. Most similar was the story feature in Instagram, often also videos, although nobody every compared viewing them with Youtube.

Although Youtube also has it's scroll/impulsive it's not a direct competition. Although you could argue any form of time consumption (online) is competition.

kids use it
toshk··on Gmail is opening and caching URLs within emails without user intervention (2019)
We use it to log in users. We quickly get complaints if something doesn't work well.
toshk··on Gmail is opening and caching URLs within emails without user intervention (2019)
We've done this for over 2 years now, and over 200k users never ran into this. Also not within government users.
toshk··on Gmail is opening and caching URLs within emails without user intervention (2019)
I understand your way of thinking, but we ended up having a flow for a government site where users had 2-3 steps what normally could be done in 1. Also many were not tech savvy and confused. So we ended up adding JS to automate the click.
toshk··on Gmail is opening and caching URLs within emails without user intervention (2019)
Yeah lots of email clients do this. Next to caching also lots of scanners for malicious content.

We solved it by having a screen with a confirmation button , then later we added javascript to show a loader page over the button and click the button automatically.

toshk··on Why is it so hard to be rational?
When all experiences we have are based in meaning those emotional experiences in some sense might be more "real" then a logical thought.
toshk··on How to Boost Innovation
A lot of fields are stifled by regulation. A practical example there is no doubt that it stifles innovation in medicine. The cost of the development has grown exponentially and a lot of it is attributable to the increase in regulation.
toshk··on Messaging and chat control
Poland is having an awesome time in the EU. Get all the subsidies and trade, and ignore the rules they don't like: not taking any immgrants, going against EU court of Justic, etc.

"The most up-to-date statistics (as of July 2016) show that in 2014 Poland received €17.436 billion from the EU whilst only contributing €3.526 billion. Poland also received nearly €2 billion more in EU funding than any other member state in 2013 (France being second highest). " https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poland_in_the_European_Union

toshk··on Messaging and chat control
Even a representative democracy is a far fetched idea with the EU.

Nobody really understand how the EU works, except for a few bureaucrats.

There are too many proxies. You vote for a local party, then you find out they go into a coalition because the parliament is huge: over 700 seats. And those parties in one coalition have very different agenda's.

Then you look deeper, and the parliament's power is very limited, and most of the power lies with the council and commission.

Both are not chosen in an election but in negotiations by the governments, which tends to mean certain countries like Germany and France have a very big say. Of course in a very indirect way these are somewhat chosen by certain part you of the people in the EU.

toshk··on On Time, Money and Health
I agree mostly with the article and that one should focus on freedom in the moment, while at the same time creating stability for the future.

But the underlying assumption that having more experiences (outside of work) leads to more happiness I believe to be somewhat false. It of course depends on the person, type of experience and definition of hapiness.

toshk··on Apple is now an antifragile company
In this case the argument is focused on Apple forcing you into their ecosystem. Even though some packages might be generic, Xcode tools & codesign wont run and build on another OS then MacOS.
toshk··on Apple is now an antifragile company
Even though you can develop in Flutter, you still need xcode tools to build the apps, even if you can mostly skip the IDE.
toshk··on MPs: Octopuses feel pain and need legal protection
It’s not unreasonable to assume that if a nervous system is present and similar pain signals are send, similar suffering is experienced by animals as humans. Simply because suffering is a motivation to take action. There might be a difference in that most animals, like baby’s, wont be able to seperate themselves from their suffering/pain. I am suffering vs suffering is all there is. If thats the case, pain for animals might even be worse then humans. That might be backed up by the fact that most animals are very pain avoidant (makes them really scared), where some humans seek it out, and most of us are able to accept a bit of pain to get something better. (There seems to be some indication that other animals have a sense of self, like dolphins, certain birds, elephants etc) (Also seems that pain for animals, same as with humans, is not felt when they are filled with adrenaline and in fight mode)
toshk··on Dutch official calls for complete ban on Bitcoin
Being backed by a government, or multiple governments, with an army and lots of financial tools is a very real thing.
toshk··on The lab-leak theory: inside the fight to uncover Covid-19’s origins
You don't seem to understand China.

Hollywood actor Cena just begged in Mandarin for forgiveness after mentioning Taiwan is a country (which it is). Local Amsterdam politicians are not allowed to go on the photo with Taiwanese politicians etc.

The Communist Party is overly controlling and will not allow anything that will challenge their vision.

While Europe and the US were busy with their internal quarrels the last decades, China has been making moves.

toshk··on The lab-leak theory: inside the fight to uncover Covid-19’s origins
The strong sentiment that it couldn't have come from the lab was suspicious from day one. It was not even allowed to be a consideration.

Also, here on this forum, I was downvoted for saying it shouldn't be ruled out that the lab might be the source.

toshk··on .org doesn't mean credible
On sites for government we always have lot of confusing emails if we don't also make the www in front of subdomains work:

So for subdomain.burrito.com, we redirect the wwww.subdomain.burrito.com

People are just so used to it.

toshk··on Spotify continues to remove Joe Rogan episodes
He often stated that nothing will change and no censorship would take place because of the move to spotify.

For many he was one of the last credible places that would give a place to more extreme voices, even if he might not agree. For years he actively advocated free speech and integrity. Commercially it might be part of the deal, but it's understandable many of his listeners feel like he sold out.

toshk··on EU rebuffs UK calls to ship AstraZeneca Covid vaccines from Europe
Those countries are not part of the EU, not sure what point you are trying to make.

This was not negotiated as a friendly trade deal as done with Canada, US, Swiss etc. It was clear they were doing something the EU doesn't want to make an example off. Tensions from both sides.

Edit: Aha, I understand know you mean they could have gotten the same deals as them. If you have sources for this, please share, but as far as I know this is not true. Take for instance this excerpt from the Financial Times:

"Slides presented to EU member states this week by the European Commission suggest it is looking for something far more sophisticated and hard-hitting for Britain. If Brussels has its way, the system will govern not just the two sides’ future trade relationship but several other partnerships in areas such as security and judicial co-operation, joint research, and aviation.

One of the key motivations for the EU is to avoid replicating the unruly jumble of agreements that govern its deep relations with Switzerland — whose population in 1992 rejected a proposal to join the European Economic Area. The two sides have subsequently built their relationship up over time, resulting in no fewer than 100 agreements governing their relations. "

toshk··on EU rebuffs UK calls to ship AstraZeneca Covid vaccines from Europe
They didn't try to prevent it. They bullied them in order to scare other nations to try something similar. I would rather an EU that listen's to the people of it's member and makes them want to stay instead of pushing the agenda of the bureaucrats and bully them into staying.

Over the last decades many EU nations had referendums, and it was clear the majority of the people in many countries are agains further expansion of EU power. Yet the EU bureaucrats didn't listen and kept pushing as a result even more people feel alineated with the EU project, the Brexit is in direct line of these developments. And even now they still keep pushing.

toshk··on The EMA Covid-19 data leak, and what it tells us about mRNA instability
It's not hard to imagine that rushed trials, rushed production and pressured approvals might not lead to the best process.

Next to that: Over the last 50-60 years approved medicines with the backing of more extensive clinical trials have been withdrawn. So the whole process in itself isn't flawless.

I'm not saying the vaccines are unsafe or all the processes are wrong, but many people who are wary are often put in a corner of conspiracy theorists and I don't think this is fair.

toshk··on An argument that nuclear power makes the climate crisis worse
:) fair play to you. At least the real estate prices will be good.

I won't go for low risk when it comes to nuclear and not let my family grow up next to it. Only no risk would be acceptable to me when it comes to nuclear, quite some tail risk in this case.

toshk··on An argument that nuclear power makes the climate crisis worse
To everyone being a proponent of this modern new nuclear plants you dream about I ask: would you want to live in a village where they would build a new nuclear plant next to it?
toshk··on Meat consumption and risk of 25 conditions: outcome-wide analyses of 475K people
I've looked into a few of the studies you mention a while back because of personal interest.

Most of the conclusions of large scale studies are not very solid and can often be dismissed with correlation is not causation. Your point is valid, but also very often popular health habits align with the view of what a healthy diet is in society. Therefore lower meat intake often is connected to more exercise, more sleep etc. Of course they often try to correct for it, but it still makes many of the conclusions debatable.

There is however one association that seems to hold up for red meat, whether that's a steak or a shitty burger, which is the connection between heme iron and certain form of cancers:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3261306/#:~:tex....

But at the same time the effect is still very small and not well understood.
