torunar··on Ask HN: What's the best phone you ever had?
Nokia Lumia 520. It was a blessing to have a device with 512 MB of RAM where both OS and apps perform without lags and freezes, UI is accessible and text input doesn't suck.
torunar··on Ash HN: What if we use file system as database?
This chapter from "Database design" by Adrienne Watt has a very good explanation why this approach didn't stick: https://opentextbc.ca/dbdesign01/chapter/chapter-1-before-th...
torunar··on Emojis of the world
Looks like you are using a pirate flag emoji for country when data is submitted from Sweden. Is it a PirateBay reference?
torunar··on Jelly Star – The Smallest Android 13 Smartphone
Imagine living in a cursed timeline where an expected battery life of one day for a device with 2000 mAh battery and 3” screen is considered a technological marvel and a selling point.

Computers truly were a mistake.

torunar··on Hackers Lose a Patron Saint (2003)
Amazing read, even though it's old. Version without paywall: https://archive.ph/yWzST
torunar··on Vimes' boots theory of poverty makes no sense
«I spoke with an extremely limited group of people who I considered being poor to prove that fiction and satire are, in fact, fiction and satire”.

torunar··on Ask HN: Is iOS 15 vulnerable to the zero-day BLASTPASS?
From my experience, Apple prioritize recent iOS versions when issuing security fixes. Affected legacy iOS versions will get them too, just later. The previous security update landed on my old iPhone one or two weeks later than on the newer one.
torunar··on Ask HN: Do you work on projects solely for your own use?
I was on a 3 year long break from coding-for-fun due to really bad burnout, but managed to recover from it a couple of months ago, so I started building my own tools again.

Right now I’m working on a static site generator using mostly busybox utils, and an alternative web player for Bandcamp. Although I have all my projects publicly hosted, I’m pretty sure they are not used by anyone but me. But hey, they make my life easier, that’s the only thing that matters.

torunar··on Just got a MacBook Pro for work; what are your tips?
I’m going to be torched by Apple enthusiasts, but I gotta say it: if you have the older model with Intel CPU, use BootCamp and install Windows 10 on it. I did it half a year ago and it changed my life drastically: now I finally have an OS that is not breaking in half after yet another upgrade because “muh we decided you don’t need 32 bit apps” or “muh we decided you don’t need kernel extensions”. And the performance is much snappier in general, typing was and is sluggish in macOS.
torunar··on Ask HN: What niche task/tool websites have you built?
https://bandamp.fly.dev/

I listen to a lot of music on Bandcamp. Unfortunately their player has only basic capabilities and doesn't support queuing multiple albums in a row. So I've built this site which is basically a queue-based player for Bandcamp.

torunar··on Constant Outages at GitHub
Did you consider the idea that for some users it's quite acceptable? I'm perfectly fine with 85% or event 70% availability of Github features since I don't pay a single penny for it. If I had aimed for 100%, I'd probably host and manage tools on my own, without sharing resources and being dependent on someone else's services.
torunar··on Spotify vs. Online Radio
The main platform for me is Bandcamp feed built from the new releases of artists I follow and genres I'm subscribed to.
torunar··on Poaching the copyright of so many sites
> I'm glad that Reddit has finally asked for a piece of the cake and demanded a profit for their APIs and content.

Nice try, u/spez.

torunar··on Ask HN: Best Way to Harden a Server?
Wield some steel bars as stiffening ribs, they will harden servers for sure.
torunar··on Ask HN: What is your stack (hardware, OS, apps, subscriptions)? Cost per mth/yr?
Thinkpad T14S with Ubuntu 22.04. IDEs: PhpStorm, CLion, PyCharm. Docker for containers, Firefox and Thunderbird for web surfing and reading mail.

Everything is provided by the employer, so I only pay taxes.

torunar··on Ask HN: For your work week, would you rather?

torunar··on Super Agent: Alternative to “I don't care about cookies”
How is it different from Consent-O-Matic? What makes it better?
torunar··on Ask HN: What Do You Pay For?
I only pay for hosting (~1.5 EUR / month). Used to pay for VPN, too, but I don't have much use of it these days.
torunar··on Show HN: Chat to People in a Room
Very nice people, cool idea, great meme potential. Not very comfortable to use from a phone, though. Area with all the 3D stuff takes too much space vertically: I have to constantly scroll through it to get to the chat input.
