tormeh··on Wero – Digital payment wallet, made in Europe
Netherlands and Luxemburg joining soon, along with what I believe is Austria's biggest bank. But yes, hardly a pan-European project.
tormeh··on Wero – Digital payment wallet, made in Europe
I think this is more about fees than sovereignty.
tormeh··on Wero – Digital payment wallet, made in Europe
I really hope we can get Wero cards at some point. I don't like my ability to pay for things to depend on my phone's battery.
tormeh··on The Sideprocalypse
Well, the affordable luxury segment has done quite well over the last couple of decades.
tormeh··on Fix the iOS keyboard before the timer hits zero or I'm switching back to Android
Do robots wear turtlenecks?
tormeh··on Apache Arrow is 10 years old
You can absolutely use it directly, but it is painful. The USP of Arrow ist that you can pass bits of memory between Polars, Datafusion, DuckDB, etc. without copying. It's Parquet but for memory.
tormeh··on Windows Notepad App Remote Code Execution Vulnerability
That explains why it's so nice. Well, not really, but it does hint at it being new and built by someone who gives a damn. It's honestly far nicer for my use than vi or nano, which is annoying since I'm on Linux.

Edit: Fedora has it available as "msedit". What a time to be alive.

tormeh··on The US is flirting with its first-ever population decline
I should have made clear that being a parent _of young children_ is destruction of the self. I'm sure once the kids are all old enough to use the toilet independently and otherwise entertain themselves it will be different. But right now their situation reminds me less of a lifestyle and more some kind of punishment.
tormeh··on Simplifying Vulkan one subsystem at a time
I think there's Rusticl for this, although it may not be ready yet.
tormeh··on The US is flirting with its first-ever population decline
Becoming a parent is basically a destruction of the self. My sister and her husband get 1-2 hours of time for themselves per day, and then they are too tired to do anything but watch TV. They've ceased to exist as individuals, basically. To them, work and the office are their places of relaxation.

They're not on HN to explain this to anyone because they just don't have the time.

tormeh··on Matrix messaging gaining ground in government IT
You just don't say the sentence at all and instead choose a technology from one of the big tech companies.
tormeh··on Matrix messaging gaining ground in government IT
It's a bit shit at being WhatsApp. Slow, buggy, and feature-poor. The unique selling points are very compelling, but only for a small niche. Fortunately for Matrix, that niche includes a lot of places with big budgets, but it does not include consumers.
tormeh··on The AI boom is causing shortages everywhere else
Very important. There is more than just 1 bullshit line of business.
tormeh··on We mourn our craft
Quick questionnaire. Please reply with how much you like/use AI and what kind of programming you do.

I wonder if there are some interesting groupings.

tormeh··on European Commission Trials Matrix to Replace Teams
EU labor laws, and fractured internal market.
tormeh··on MaliciousCorgi: AI Extensions send your code to China
The situation is absolutely insane, but it's also productive, but real security would slow everything down a lot. The moment you ask some corporate bureaucrat to put their signature down on a piece of paper saying that such and such dev tool is approved for use, they're going to block everything to avoid the responsibility implied by their approval. I can't really come up with a system that both works and is secure. The only exception is signing up for an integrated environment where Microsoft or Apple provides the OS, compiler, and editor. Oops - Apple doesn't sell servers, so only Microsoft offers this. Hope you like C#.

In theory you can mix and match, but in practice most bureaucrats will insist on single-sourcing.

tormeh··on EU launches government satcom program in sovereignty push
Most member countries are too small to have their own capabilities. It's either some sort of EU capability or outsourcing to US/China. Denmark can't afford operating a fleet of stealth bombers or whatever. In the past, basically all the big-country stuff was outsourced to the US. With Trump being elected twice this strategy seems to be a lot less safe than what everyone (except the French) used to think.
tormeh··on Finland looks to introduce Australia-style ban on social media
You'd think so, and yet Reddit adds suck.
tormeh··on Antirender: remove the glossy shine on architectural renderings
Well, it's even cheaper if you skip the wash and let it become completely drab and awful.
tormeh··on Celebrities say they are being censored by TikTok after speaking out against ICE
I don't think the parent said it was. This is clearly closer to mercantilism, given the degree of government involvement.
tormeh··on France Aiming to Replace Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, etc.
The US capital markets are truly a wonder to behold. There's no way to replace that. For good and ill, you'd only get weird looks in Europe if you asked for €10 billion for an unproven business model in what's somehow also a competitive market.

To be fair this example does look a lot like insanity.

tormeh··on Scaling PostgreSQL to power 800M ChatGPT users
Why is it a good database? Integration with Entra? I've heard arguments in favor of Oracle DB, but I've never heard anything good about MSSQL besides integration with the MS ecosystem.
tormeh··on Ubisoft cancels six games including Prince of Persia and closes studios
The rising cost has been a problem for a long time now. It's mostly models and textures fit for high-res screens, and cutscenes etc. to accompany them. That said, there is space at the top for a few companies to do this sort of development - maybe Ubisoft just isn't capable of playing in this space beyond AssCreed.
tormeh··on Our approach to age prediction
For phots of ID this is obvious: A data leak, followed by impersonation ("identity theft") and unwelcome invoices and/or empty bank accounts.
tormeh··on IP Addresses Through 2025
Many wired networks are IPv4-only, so you've excluded a bunch of consumers. It'd be like not supporting the Edge browser.
tormeh··on Show HN: Dock – Slack minus the bloat, tax, and 90-day memory loss
Really? Teams is the most sticky? Teams sucks. Excel and PowerPoint are the most sticky parts, and Teams just comes bundled with those.
tormeh··on The Cathedral, the Megachurch, and the Bazaar
It's excellent. I grinned ear to ear.
tormeh··on High-Level Is the Goal
Not any reference, though, but a specific style of one: A reference mostly written as a box-ticking exercise, written more for the writer than the reader. I like manpages, but the microcontroller manuals rarely reach those lofty heights.
tormeh··on IKEA for Software
You make it sound more like unix cli tools. I guess that makes some sense.
tormeh··on Launch HN: Indy (YC S21) – A support app designed for ADHD brains
Yes, this makes sense, at least to me. But the issue is that this is a lot of stuff working together and not just another app.
