torium··on Modos Paper Monitor – Open-hardware e-paper monitor and dev kit
Not sure I understand what I'm looking at.

At 0:47, which one is the e-ink, left hand side or right hand side? Initially I thought the e-ink was on the left hand side, but it has SO MUCH GLARE.

Also on the intro at 0:10 you can see the glare move across as they tilt it.

More glare: 0:26 (left) 0:28 (top left).

I have an e-ink reader and it has zero glare. I read it on the beach as clearly as paper, I'm not exaggerating.

They've done the hardest part (the latency), how don't know how to explain fumbling this badly on the easy part. It shouldn't have glass in front!!

torium··on You're Wrong About Dates – and Your Code Is Lying to You
Meh. People know dates are intervals. You just have to use it properly. All libs make assumptions.

For example, this lib makes the assumption that years and months have a fixed length, e.g. date(2024Q2) - date(2024Q1) = 3 months

torium··on Meta Leaks Part 1: Israel and Meta
Sounds like you wanted me to say "5% is a big number" and then you would say "it's not compared to these other things". Sorry to burst your talking point.

Yeah, it's more complicated than that, I'm glad you agree.

torium··on Meta Leaks Part 1: Israel and Meta
Yes. The longest comment on this thread starts out by saying there's so many typos.

These might not be state actors, but like you said, a blind man can see that when someone's comment on genocide is "the article has so many typos", that person already started out with the conclusion.

torium··on Meta Leaks Part 1: Israel and Meta
> Is the implication that everything anti-Israel - regardless of its merit or truth - should be upvoted and praised, or at least never in any way criticized? That, to me, feels a lot weirder.

You don't understand that in the face of genocide people cling on to anything? Some times even, yes even! gasp, if the article has typos?

torium··on Meta Leaks Part 1: Israel and Meta
I asked first. You didn't answer so I don't feel the need to answer either.

Also, your disingenuity (implying without stating that 5% is small) already convinced me that you're not in good faith, so this wouldn't be productive anyway.

torium··on Meta Leaks Part 1: Israel and Meta
> halflife

> 50% of all the Jews worldwide were wiped out by their own countrymen during the holocaust. Less than 5% of Gaza was killed. Russia lost more than 10% of its population in WW2, would that be considered holocaust?

If you wanna throw numbers at me you need to first clarify what percentage of innocent killing you find acceptable.

> unix_fan

> You can continue to do terrible things as a company, just as long as you don’t do it with Israel

That's a weird thing to say. I certainly don't agree and would like to hear the rationale of anyone who supports that view.

torium··on Meta Leaks Part 1: Israel and Meta
Weird that you choose to focus on the quality of the material. Surely the underlying fact that Israel is committing genocide is a lot more important?
torium··on Meta Leaks Part 1: Israel and Meta
Absolutely.

Furthermore I've started hearing people calling it "the Palestinian Holocaust" (I think it's entirely fitting). Israel has owned that word for very long as has used it as an asset that they milk. It's about time they lose ownership.

torium··on Ford reveals breakthrough process for lower priced EVs
On the other hand, history is littered with car companies that left an indelible impact in the car industry and then went bankrupt.
torium··on Operation Costs in CPU Clock Cycles (2016)
The x-axis is in CPU cycles (10^0 means 1 cycle).

If you CPU runs on 1000MHz that's 10^9 cycles per second. On that CPU the right hand side of the picture corresponds to 1ms. You can do 1 million register-register operations in 1ms, or 1 billion in 1sec.

Computers are fast.

> Watch TV with the sound low and study the body language of the actors until you can recognize comfort and discomfort.

Bad advice. Actors don't mimic reality. Actors mimic what viewers expect to see in actors. This means that the body language you see in actors and the language you see in real life are different.

torium··on Debian 13 “Trixie”
Ooo la la, GnuCash 5.10. I'm still on 4.4.

Can't find release notes though, help?

I've found the docs, but they're huge. I'll looking specifically for a list of differences between 4.4 and 5.10. (Or at least the biggest differences)

torium··on Dollar Street – Photos from families with different incomes
I love the idea and the content, but the navigation is atrocious.
torium··on Ditching GitHub (2024)
> I'm all for self-hosting like this or using less known services.

I'm all for the idea of self-hosting in abstract, but in practice I don't want to spend my life looking after services.

I'm all for the idea of growing your own rice, but in practice I'd rather pay someone else to do it for me.

I'm not trolling, I'm just emphasizing a super super important aspect which HNers tend to minimize, which is that self-hosting is work and even people who are technically able to do it might not want to.

torium··on Teacher AI use is already out of control and it's not ok
I do blame the overweight for eating too much.

> personal moral failure

I didn't imply it's a moral failure, just a failure.

torium··on Teacher AI use is already out of control and it's not ok
Exactly, youtube is another one.

10 years ago I used to be mindblown by the amount of books about any subject we can find online. Today we have people making videos about any subject.

torium··on Emailing a one-time code is worse than passwords
You're gonna have to take my passwords from my cold dead hands.

On HN, reddit counts as a negative signal. You link to reddit directly and most HNers will instantly downvote.

I keep telling people here that reddit is actually an underappreciated goldmine, but I guess feeling better than others feels too good to pass on.

In my mind, reddit is like of HN, except instead of being just tech and business oriented people, it's every subject under the sun. Most of it is garbage (like on HN) but if you're willing to search it's a goldmine.

torium··on OpenAI's ChatGPT Agent casually clicks through "I am not a robot" verification
AI doesn't "know" anything. It produces all kinds of things: truths, lies, and nonsense. Pressing a button labeled "I'm not a bot" is the same.
torium··on OpenAI's ChatGPT Agent casually clicks through "I am not a robot" verification
People are surprised because a computer can press a button?
torium··on The future is not self-hosted
> It's interesting to me that recently people have started equating self hosting with having a physical server in your house.

LOL right. I bought an ereader that works for me instead of working for Amazon. No need to run a server.

> Kindle users would no longer be able to download and back up their book libraries to their computers

I should create an account that posts nothing but the phrase "Stallman was right". I'd have work every day.

Anyway, I have a Pocketbook[1], recommended. Got the cheapest one, cost me something like 100 pounds. Doesn't need internet if you don't want it, and supports all the usual file formats.

torium··on Graphene OS: a security-enhanced Android build
Does anybody else here see as problematic that this OS supports mostly Pixel, a Google phone?

Over and again people on HN make the following argument: "Google is a company that makes most of its revenue from ads and surveillance. Therefore, you should always assume that Google is spying on you". But somehow when it comes to Pixel people give it a pass?

Prediction: If Pixel isn't already hardwired to phone home and report on your activities, it will slowly become so over time, as Google realizes its interest. You know, as it happened with Android, Chrome, and everything else that Google touches.

torium··on Graphene OS: a security-enhanced Android build
> ""will never again be closely tied to any particular sponsor or company"". Work on GrapheneOS is supported by a Canada-based foundation created in 2023; there appears to be almost no public information available regarding this organization, though.
