torbjorn··on The OSI-Model in form of a nice website
Great website. The title on https://osi-model.com/data_link_layer/ needs to be changed to "Layer 2".
torbjorn··on Julius Caesar's Greatest Military Victory [video]
Best YouTube channel on military strategy I know of.
torbjorn··on Don't copy paste from a website to a terminal
Running this code doesn't actually do anything bad. It just demonstrates the shell's access to sensitive data and downloads a file upload utility.
torbjorn··on Graffiti Networks: A Subversive, Internet-Scale File Sharing Model (2009) [pdf]
Really cool, now all someone needs to do is mash this up with the RedditStorage project (https://github.com/Rossem/RedditStorage) to make this a real live thing.
torbjorn··on High Frequency Trading Strategies
Just making a guess here but it may be that you have several limit orders fail to be filled for any given trade but when you you place an order that finally does get filled it may still complete a winning trade despite being your 5th order placed for the trade.
torbjorn··on Ask HN: Where do you get your inspiration from?
Drugs. LSD and Adderall.
torbjorn··on A Node.js powered interactive illustration tracking Christmas on Twitter
I'd like to make a site like this, where can I go to learn? How do you create a front-end like this?
torbjorn··on Ethereum, Bitcoin’s most ambitious successor
Any idea on when investment and mining in Ethereum will begin?
torbjorn··on What are Stack Overflow unicoins?
Dumping all my bitcoins for unicoin. Feels good to be an early adopter.
torbjorn··on Cognitive Lode – Brain gems for decision-makers
This is a visually appealing interface for wikipedia's list of cognitive biases. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cognitive_biases
torbjorn··on Results of operation against child exploitation enterprise on Tor network
Would the NSA be involved in something like this?
torbjorn··on Two Factor Auth List
I use two factor authentication apps on my phone to generate my one time passwords. This works great for me but I always wonder what I will do if I lose my phone. I've backed up the authenticator apps. I am correct in assuming I can restore the one time password generators from the back-ups? Is there anything else I should do?
torbjorn··on Warren Buffett: Stay Away From Bitcoin. It's A Mirage
http://www.cnbc.com/id/47307200 http://www.bizjournals.com/sanjose/news/2012/05/07/warren-bu... http://online.wsj.com/community/groups/market-view-845/topic...

this addresses the p2p database aspect http://expectedpayoff.com/blog/2013/03/22/bitcoin-and-the-by...
torbjorn··on Hillary Clinton: Putin's tactics like Hitler's before WWII
Godwin's Law is leaking.
torbjorn··on A Major Coinbase Milestone: 1 Million Consumer Wallets
Sure, Bad Things™ could happen at Coinbase like they did at Gox. However, I think it is reasonable to trust Coinbase more than Mt. Gox. If you looking to Mt. Gox's history there are many signals that suggest general mismanagement and dysfunction.

This is in no way rigorous but consider User Interface design as a rule of thumb. Gox had an ugly unintuitive site. Coinbase on the other hand has a polished UI. This attention to detail suggests that the people who operate Coinbase are very different from those who operated Gox.

torbjorn··on A Major Coinbase Milestone: 1 Million Consumer Wallets
The mistrust in Coinbase line of thinking seems similar to fear and paranoia about terrorism. Could a bad actor acquire and use agency to do something horrible like obtain a dirty bomb and set it off? Sure, it is possible. But at the same time it is very unlikely. People GENERALLY want to be good actors and make a positive impact on the world.

With Mt. Gox I am more inclined to think their problems stemmed incompetence rather than malevolence.

torbjorn··on Sen. Manchin demands complete US ban on Bitcoin
The "silent majority".
torbjorn··on Bitcoin security model: trust by computation
A distributed exchange would have even more value if USD to BTC transactions were criminalized since there would be no central agency or person to strike at and shut the exchange down.
torbjorn··on Bitcoin security model: trust by computation
The Gox situation is unfortunate but I think it stems from the weaknesses and corruptability of centralized systems (in this case the Mt Gox Bitcoin Exchange) rather than flaws within Bitcoin.

Decentralized exchanges are in the works that should prevent similar situations in the future.

torbjorn··on What Programming Languages Do You Struggle To Hire For?
Does anyone know how in demand Perl skills are?

I am being asked to learn Perl by my employer and I am wondering how much real value it will add to my CV down the line.

torbjorn··on US makes Bitcoin exchange arrests
I know it is how the legal system works but it seems kinda silly that laws from 1994 and 1960 apply to bitcoin.
torbjorn··on Ask HN: How do I add $100k to my 2014 income?
Build a business in the bitcoin economy.
torbjorn··on Bro pages: like man pages, but with examples only
The hostility towards bros in this thread makes me feel uncomfortable and unwelcome.
torbjorn··on My dad unexpectedly uses my Linux laptop to get real work done
Similar experience.

Mom is 55. Very non technical person, she learned how to send text messages a month ago.

Nevertheless, my dad set up the computer in their house with Ubuntu two years ago and she's been using it for email and web browsing ever since.
