topmonk··on Deep Work Hours v0.5 Beta
I like this, but I sometimes tackle issues where I can't abruptly stop working without losing the context of what I was doing.

It would be nice if there was a overtime button so I can get to a good stopping point.

topmonk··on Show HN: Ieddit – A minimalist, Reddit-like site with anonymous posts/comments
ieddit sounds quite close to idiot. You might want to change that (unless it was intended)
topmonk··on Richard Stallman steps down as as head of the GNU Project, effective immediately
So? A group of people all getting together to dig out the dirty laundry of someone together, doesn't make your participation any better. I'm not trying to single you out, but there is no "reply all" button.
topmonk··on Richard Stallman steps down as as head of the GNU Project, effective immediately
Stallman isn't obligated to swoop in and give his side to the story everytime someone says something nasty about him. That's a ridiculous standard especially for someone as famous and controversial as he.

Yea, I agree you don't need anyones permission to post this kind of stuff, it is free speech, afterall. I just object to you justifying it as somehow being moral, just because it's relevant information to someone who might interact with him in the future.

This is a public forum, and posting this kind of stuff here is being an asshole. That's my only point.

topmonk··on Richard Stallman steps down as as head of the GNU Project, effective immediately
It's not objective fact either. We don't know Stallman's side of the story.

Besides which, you're dodging my point.

topmonk··on Richard Stallman steps down as as head of the GNU Project, effective immediately
You misquoted me. I didn't write known.

The whole point of my request was to show the absurdity of justifying spreading rumors about someone simply because their bad behavior is known.

topmonk··on Richard Stallman steps down as as head of the GNU Project, effective immediately
Now what's the ugliest, awful story about your behavior? Kindly share it publicly along with proof of your actual identity.

This is relevant information for anyone who might consider giving you a job, having a relationship with you, or renting you a place to stay, so it's totally appropriate to air your dirty laundry in a entirely public forum and associate it to your real identity. Thank you.

topmonk··on California's ‘Surprise’ Billing Law Is Protecting Patients and Angering Doctors
There should be an anti price gouging law which states that a doctor can only change their prices every month or something, and must publish them publicly. This could also include stats indicating with which percentage what procedures are done for a specific complaint. Ex, for a head injury, in 50% of cases an MRI was done at cost X.

Then we could all use our internet connected phones to find the price instantly. If we are unconscious or decapitated at the time, we could set up a set up a ranking system beforehand weighing price, distance to hospital, and quality of service ratings.

topmonk··on The Psychology of Serial Killer Movies
Japan has far worse. See “Audition” , for example of this.

I was really emotionally affected after that one. Good fun.

topmonk··on Do Stocks Outperform Treasury Bills? (2018)
> Index fund buyers don't read EPS, so the frauds are targeting the dumb active investors.

I'm not saying the buyer's do. The selection criteria of the index fund may include it.

> It's generally agreed that index funds are going to eventually destroy the stock market

Or, like I've been saying, companies will find says to adjust their figures to get selected for index funds. And then eventually implode, due to the cost of doing so, which in most cases is quite a lot, taking down the investors along with them.

topmonk··on Do Stocks Outperform Treasury Bills? (2018)
It worked in the past but today is different is a vast oversimplification of my argument, and implying I'm either acting in bad faith or hoodwinked by those that are in order to pay off some investment manager is just an attempt to destroy the messenger.

Good luck with Vanguard.

topmonk··on Do Stocks Outperform Treasury Bills? (2018)
Why does everyone ignore the second part of my point? Corporations are going into record debt to do this. It is one thing to pay back shareholders by a dividend or buyback or whatever, if the company has extra profits, but it is quite another to borrow money to do it.

That works for now, but as soon as those interest rates tick up...

topmonk··on Do Stocks Outperform Treasury Bills? (2018)
When companies have now started to go into debt to buyback shares and artificially raise their EPS, who are they targeting? The people who are actively evaluating what they're buying, or those asleep at the wheel buying index funds?

Index funds might have been a good investment in the past, before wallstreet has figured out how to exploit it like they're doing today.

topmonk··on Richard M. Stallman resigns
Sorry, you're right. I didn't realize the extent of his problematic behavior.
topmonk··on Richard M. Stallman resigns
You are talking about a brilliant man actually getting fired, vs some hypothetical what-if that hasn't been proven.

Why not go after actual occurrences of discrimination, rather than assuming anytime some speaks out in a non-PC manner, that it means they are also going to discriminate against others? This is arresting for murder before it happens. It's the canonical example of "thought crime".

"C-x C-c" should become a new rallying cry for valuing technological ability over political beliefs.
topmonk··on CDC says stop vaping as mystery lung condition spreads
When you buy a cup from Starbucks you typically are only buying a single dose. If you buy a vape cartridge, you have dozens of doses. It's much harder to throw the latter away than the former.

Suppose someone bought a car, and found out that the car vents were spewing somewhat toxic that has a slight chance to kill them. If they needed to go to work in it to put food on the table, can you see how someone might say they had no choice but to use it?

Now take that logic and apply it to a vape cartridge. Say someone bought that cartridge which carries so many doses, along with paying the cost of the physical vape machine and the cost of electrically charging the machine, and spent the necessary time and emotional cost to wait for the machine to do so. Then they find it out it may be toxic. Is it really a realistic choice to take the financial and emotional burden of throwing away the cartridge, if it provides a needed soothing relief to their mind?

topmonk··on Joi Ito Resigns from M.I.T. Media Lab After Outcry over Jeffrey Epstein Ties
Why? What makes you hold these women up as such good judges of character? It sounds like it could be just typical office gossip/jealousy to me.
topmonk··on Tax Policy Gave Us White Claw
Japan was the only place I've been where one could buy a 4 liter jug of whiskey. At a convenience store.
topmonk··on Chinese people who show sympathy for HK protests risk getting doxxed by friends
Even if you're right, what is doxxing going to accomplish? Do you think you can punish people into thinking the way you do?
topmonk··on I find journaling indispensable
> If there isn’t a tension, a resistant, a sorrow, you didn’t make a break through.

Sounds masochistic. How can you determine whether this is helping or hurting? If you are regularly searching for things to make you sad and tense, you could be conditioning your mind to seek and find those things.

topmonk··on I find journaling indispensable
Also use pass (for passwords). That's a clever hack, thanks.

topmonk··on A Pissed-Off Tutorial for Google Wave (2010) [video]
The Google Translate android app has a magic camera that recognizes translates and replaces the text in real time in the video feed. That's pretty cool.
topmonk··on Acute Effects of Electronic Cigarette Aerosol Inhalation on Vascular Function
It's still considered the safest form of tobacco out there, and the increased risk of mouth cancer is quite small to non existent.

topmonk··on Acute Effects of Electronic Cigarette Aerosol Inhalation on Vascular Function
Have you ever tried Swedish Snus? It's supposedly healthier than smoking, and no need to spit like chewing tobacco.

If you try it. make sure you get fresh stuff before you pass judgment, because it ferments inside the package if left out for too long.

topmonk··on Mortgage Market Reopens to Risky Borrowers
Great idea, maybe you could write a report on it.

Seriously, what is it going to matter what a few semi-anonymous comments on the internet are going to say? The news media has all the exposure and presumption of telling the truth, whereas people writing blogs and posting comments do not.

topmonk··on Kerbal Space Program 2
There are some mods for ksp that make things more realistic, including a real solar system and more realistic rockets.
topmonk··on Open letter from an Android developer to the Google Play team
But this behavior is like killing the Golden goose to get at the golden eggs inside. It's extremely shortsighted.
topmonk··on The Population Bust
Children used to be a way to support oneself in retirement. The more children you had, the better chance that at least one or two would be around in adulthood to take care of you.

Affluence means you have the means to take care of yourself, so therefore don't need to spend the effort of raising kids for this reason.
