> Who does this work for? It doesn't for people with spouses and children. I can't be removed from the real world when my child wants my attention. How many hours of game play do you think the average family person might have available to them where they can just remove themselves from the real world?

You could also ascribe the same issues for a parent who wanted to leave the house. In fact more so, since if I left the house with a small child, I can't instantly return if I become aware of some urgent situation. Yet, bars, pool halls, bowling alleys, movie theatres, restaurants, etc., etc., still seem to have survived this seemingly momenumental issue you are harping on about.

It's called, “getting your VR legs”, akin to sea legs. It worked for me, at least. As an extreme example, I can now play as a character in a space suit, twirling and spinning around for hours, without getting motion sickness. I also regularly play rally racing games where I'm constantly subjected to bumps and jumps, and don't notice it at all. This was after around 100 hours of VR, I think.

Actually I've found the experience somewhat magical, in that I get the same stress relief from being couped up all day by leaving the house to go do something outside as just playing a game for an hour or two. It feels like I'm actually going to another place, nowadays.

This really only started when I got the high end, Valve Index, which has a 90hz+ refresh rate, so maybe that has something to do with it.

It doesn't seem so revolutionary from what I've read.
topmonk··on Trump's EU envoy admits Ukraine quid pro quo in updated testimony
If Biden is actually guilty, wouldn't we want him to be investigated before possibly becoming the President?

If Trump didn't push for this, who would? It's the same as when Obama called on the FBI to investigate Trump.

> ultimately the market is the best judge of which is the best design.

This is just bias. How can you know what the ultimate best judge of anything is? You would have to know what all the alternatives that could ever be conceived would be.

And I can prove you wrong more directly. If the market is the best judge of the of the best design, why is so much money spent on advertising? If a better designed product with less advertising faced a worse designed product with better advertising and always won, since "ultimately the market is the best judge of which is the best design", then there would be no point spending money on advertising at all.

If you are able to recognize that diversity of opinion is desirable, why can't the person in charge recognize this, and create groups that work on different ideas in tandem?

Once the ones that are successful bear fruit, those that are working on the failures can be moved over to the successful groups. And instead of the current environment, where there is a lot of wasted effort allowing an inferior product to go all the way to market to languish there, the decision can be made much earlier than that, saving all those wasted resources.

topmonk··on AMD is having its day
The problem is not incentives, but culture. From a view purely based on incentives, there is no reason to support your grandmother, for example, rather than kicking her out in the cold. Only our culture stops us to treat our closest family members this way.

If we expanded what we thought of as “us” from just the individual unit, however small that might be (the familial unit for some, just the individual self for others) to to include the entire country and government running it, there is no telling what we could achieve.

topmonk··on AMD is having its day
The person in charge could have the same philosophy as you, and after seeing several reports of non-progress, invite some other people with alternative ideas to work in tandem.

There is nothing wrong with trying different approaches in parallel, but why does it have to go all the way from cradle to market that way? At a certain point it would be obvious which design was the better one, and then the group who was working on the design that proved inferior could then join the more successful group and double their productivity. If it was possible to cut losses way ahead of the curve, imagine what could have already been achieved.

Wouldn't we all fair better if those doing the duplicate work of researching for their individual companies instead were able to work together on a single design? If instead of two corporations wasting resources fighting each other for market dominance, if we all were only allowed to work for the government, tasks like these could be performed in a way that nothing was wasted and not only that but we all worked for the greater good of the people rather than the profit of a few.

Such a configuration would surely beat the pants off of any capitalist environment regardless of the regulatory structure imposed. Not to mention, by having goals that put the people first, would end up with a society of better served, happier people where empathy was the rule rather than the exception.

> Are those the same people that were unable to notice not one, but two cameras broken pointing to a very special recluse for an undefined amount of time?

Did the people who design the prison also work there as security guards? Is that what you're asking?

> We could ask the smartest team of architects in the planet to design the most secure jail in the planet and then put idiots at charge. The security of the jail will vanish in a poof of "I couldn't care less about replacing this broken bulb"

What does this have to do with what you wrote? This actually sounds that you're arguing that it most likely was a suicide if everyone was so inept. Let me ask, how many times did something like this happen before, do you think, in the last 40 years or so?

I find that you need to study a lot of words rather than focusing on a few and get the meaning/spelling exactly right. If you have a loose grasp on the meaning of 200 words vs a perfect understanding of 50 words you are much more likely to be able to read a piece if text.
topmonk··on Ask HN: Does anyone else struggle with procrastination when learning something?
I have a similar problem. I think I need external motivation, like a job or being a member of a team, to really be motivated to do something. Since I retired early, in my mid 30s, though, I don't have this kind of environment.

When I work alone, just a trickle of productivity comes out, unless I really push myself.

Once, I forced myself to work 4 hours a day for months to push a project out. I was able to accomplish this, but I was quite miserable when I was working.

Before I retired and was working for a company, I was able to push out 10 hours a day including a day on the weekend, and felt fine.

I keep thinking if there was only some way to create a team like environment I'd be able to accomplish a lot more, but I'm not sure how to do that. Reporting my results to others who aren't invested in what I'm doing doesn't seem to work. So, I don't know.
