tomschlick··on Heavier cars are safer for their drivers, but far deadlier for everyone else
First of all, dont threaten me with a good time.

Second, the M60 fires a 7.62x51 round, not .50 BMG. You're thinking of the M2 or "Ma Duece".

tomschlick··on Guidance to make federally funded research freely available without delay
They should go one step further and require all (non-classified) government software to be developed in the open.
tomschlick··on GitHub-Next
I'd imagine it's less about setup complexity and more about reducing the attack surface of the main domain where any number of mistakes on the subdomain could expose a vulnerability for the main domain as well.

The Senate was designed from the beginning to be an obstacle. If you can't get both a majority of people, and a majority of states to agree then it should stay a law at the state level instead of the federal.

tomschlick··on Google’s Nest will provide data to police without a warrant
Police request warrants. Judges approve and sign said warrants and they then become legally executable.
tomschlick··on Fake Dog for Home Security
Can confirm. My 1 year old Golden got extremely protective of my wife when she was pregnant and is now protective of my son to the same degree. Large loud barking, defensive stance until we either greet the person or tell him its ok. Otherwise a normal dopey and chill golden.
tomschlick··on Soft deletion probably isn't worth it
The biggest one is to use a timestamp instead of a boolean. For instance Laravel used `deleted_at` as the field name with the type of TIMESTAMP (for mysql at least).

This allows you to do a `select * from users where deleted_at is null` to get the active records, but also know when the user was deleted if you need to audit / rollback.

tomschlick··on Soft deletion probably isn't worth it
> It's basically 90s PHP all over again.

Which is funny because Laravel give you this for free as well through it's ORM. Soft deletes are an easily solved problem with $table->softDeletes() in your migration.

If you have good credit (>760) you can get 0% interest or close to it loans pretty regularly if you wait. At that point there is no reason for me not to take on the loan and just setup autopay.
tomschlick··on Supreme Court Overturns Roe vs. Wade
They overturned "may issue" laws where you could meet all the training and qualifications to legally carry but a state official could make an arbitrary judgement call based on if you had a "good reason" to carry.

All states with "shall issue" are still in effect because its a straight here are the requirements, if you meet them and are not a prohibited person, you get your permit.

Also, the right to bear arms is explicitly enumerated in the constitution, so taking that right away isn't up to the states. The right to an abortion is not. So it goes to each state to decide.

tomschlick··on Supreme Court Overturns Roe vs. Wade
> Regarding abortion, what aspect of the constitution would cover it?

The Roe case hinged on abortion being a right under privacy right. It was a very weak argument and even Ruth Bader Ginsberg (a very left leaning justice who died recently) didnt like that reasoning and thought it was weak: https://www.washingtonpost.com/history/2022/05/06/ruth-bader...

tomschlick··on I cut GTA Online loading times (2021)
The product manager shouldnt be the boss of an engineer. Thats what engineering managers are for. Product / Eng managers work together to set goals of what they want done, it shouldnt include how they want it done, and exclude potential side fixes. Thats how you kill the morale of an engineering team.
tomschlick··on I cut GTA Online loading times (2021)
If the tests dont fail thats not my problem.
tomschlick··on I cut GTA Online loading times (2021)
The boy scout "leave it better than you found it" mantra has always served me well. Hell, sometimes that small fix can lead you down a rabbit hole that uncovers fixes to larger problems that have been plaguing an app for an eternity.
tomschlick··on I cut GTA Online loading times (2021)
Same. When I was a team lead I always pushed for 30% of all story points being for maintenance / tech debt that product couldn't touch.
tomschlick··on I cut GTA Online loading times (2021)
That's why you stop asking permission to make quick fixes and just submit the PR. Obviously there is a balance here but if you can't "steal" a few hours in a week from the product driven roadmap to do so then there is something wrong in the engineering culture.
tomschlick··on Twitter CEO fires two top executives, freezes hiring
The edit button would only be available for say 5 minutes after posting. Would show that it was edited with a history available to see what was changed. And according to Musk, could reset the like / retweets on it.
tomschlick··on The ACLU Has Lost Its Way

Side note: For anyone who doesn't know, they are available on Amazon Smile as a charity so you can support them with a few cents from every purchase you make at no additional cost to you.

tomschlick··on Twitter set to accept Musk's $43B offer – sources
It seems that of those, the only one that had anything to do with suspensions / bans was the Occupy accounts and those (according to the article) seem to have been tripping the "might be a bot" thresholds because of how they don't post for a long time and then all of a sudden all blast the same content from the same protests.

While they shouldn't be banned (and I'm assuming that was fixed after that article came out if in fact they were not bots), I haven't seen any examples of specific left wing accounts getting banned for posting content as many on the right have (examples: Hunter Biden stories and the NYP, anyone posting Wuhan Lab leak theory in 2020-2021, The Babylon Bee for the Rachel Levine satire posts, etc).

tomschlick··on Twitter set to accept Musk's $43B offer – sources
> there are countless examples of the left-wing getting banned

Can you name some that weren't due to the poster threatening someone, doxing or otherwise something illegal? I honestly can't think of any off the top of my head where a left wing post/user was banned for something legal but I can think of tons from the other side.

tomschlick··on What would open sourcing the Twitter algorithm actually look like?
Other than a lot of people preferring the reverse chronological feed, I think the biggest complaint I see these days is the perception that the algorithm is being manually manipulated to promote/not promote certain topics and/or people.

Given that Twitter/Facebook/Reddit/Tiktok are the behemoths in the room that all have the power to sway public opinion by either promoting or suppressing information, I think they should be regulated so that any topic that was promoted or suppressed by the algorithm or manual human intervention should show itself on the content just like an ad does. "This content has been quarantined by [Twitter Staff / Automated Review] and is only available to those with the direct url." would be a perfect example of such a message.

From there, users should have control over if they want to see such quarantined content or if they want a "safe" experience that Twitter curates for them.

tomschlick··on Amazon worker chat app to ban words such as “union”, “pay raise”, “slave labor”
Not the parent commenter, but its pretty weird / creepy that you spent the time to go through 2 years of their posts to find that rather innocuous comment.

Also, it isn't really cancel culture for a company to say they dont want that on their internal kudos app presumably while using company equipment.

tomschlick··on Amazon moves employees out of downtown Seattle office due to crime
Because we don't have a long term mental health committal system like we should and the criminal system cant hold him forever on small charges.
tomschlick··on Amazon moves employees out of downtown Seattle office due to crime
Thats not the case anymore in cities like Seattle/SF/LA that have removed funding from police and discouraged police to arrest for crimes like theft, breaking into cars, etc. In the cases where they are arrested they are released on no-bail hours later to do the same thing.
tomschlick··on Amazon moves employees out of downtown Seattle office due to crime
If he doesn't want to help himself I see only 2 options then, either A) cut him off of all services and let him hit bottom to the point where he will want help or B) go to prison, get out and get better himself (if not, repeat)
tomschlick··on Amazon moves employees out of downtown Seattle office due to crime
The part that is missing is the personal responsibility. If the guy doesnt change his direction with all the help thats available to him thats his own fault, not the system's.
