tommoor··on Small asteroid to hit Earth's atmosphere today
> This is only the ninth time that humankind has discovered an asteroid before it impacts Earth

TIL. It seems like it's basically luck if someone is looking through a telescope in the right place at the right time?

tommoor··on Did you lose your AirPods?
There's also some social signaling here, like 415 is the original San Francisco area code – but if you got a number in the last few years it might be 628 which was added as 415 reached capacity.
tommoor··on Show HN: Tegon: Open-source alternative to Jira, Linear
I think you can guess
tommoor··on Show HN: I built a IMDB for all kinds of micro-creators
MySpace vibes, I have absolutely no idea what's going on! (take that as a positive or a negative depending on what you're going for here)

All the images are insanely pixelated, if you can't get hi-res probably want to rethink the design around that limitation

tommoor··on Ask HN: what are examples of successful "open-source alternatives"?
Ok, cool.
tommoor··on Ask HN: what are examples of successful "open-source alternatives"?
> I don't know if it'd have positioned itself as an "open source alternative"

It was literally a pixel for pixel open source clone of GitHub for the first few years.

tommoor··on Ask HN: what are examples of successful "open-source alternatives"?
GitLab, Mattermost, RocketChat would be a few good examples of products that began as OSS alternatives to well-established players.

Outline (https://www.getoutline.com) is successful on most metrics you'd judge a business and OSS project on.

I'm not sure if any of these ever pitched themselves explicitly that way on HN though. I think explicitly labeling as an "Open source alternative" brings a lot of baggage and expectations, and often says more about the maintainers philosophical POV than ability to create a sustainable business ;)

tommoor··on Show HN: I am building an open-source Confluence and Notion alternative
Checkout www.getoutline.com - it includes full SSO support and generally much more functionality than here with it being in development 5y
tommoor··on Show HN: I am building an open-source Confluence and Notion alternative
Outline has SSO in all editions, not just paid
tommoor··on Don't store your cucumbers in the fridge (2012)
Yep, just a rule of thumb – there are many things that the supermarket finds worth refrigerating
tommoor··on Don't store your cucumbers in the fridge (2012)
As a rule of thumb – just store everything how the supermarket does, they want produce to last as long as possible too.

Tomatoes, cucumbers, oranges – you'll find them all unrefrigerated

tommoor··on Exit Strategy: The Case for Single-Stair Egress
Yes, this is a new building in NYC ;-)
tommoor··on Exit Strategy: The Case for Single-Stair Egress
There is a concrete well, they are completely isolated from one another
tommoor··on Exit Strategy: The Case for Single-Stair Egress
There is a concrete well, they are completely fire isolated in this case
tommoor··on NYPD will deploy drones to respond to 911 calls in 5 NYC precincts: officials
preferably idling in a crosswalk or bikelane
tommoor··on Exit Strategy: The Case for Single-Stair Egress
My 30+ story building has two concrete stairwells wrapped around each other, which seems like a super efficient way to achieve the current legislation
tommoor··on Ask HN: Founders who offer free/OS and paid SaaS, how do you manage your code?
It is, CI times are fairly fast – in reality it's not been too much of a bottleneck but I'd imagine if you had a team working on the private fork you'd probably want to automate the merges from public at the least.
tommoor··on Ask HN: Founders who offer free/OS and paid SaaS, how do you manage your code?
Like many other answers here, Outline [0] has eventually landed on a plugin architecture with a private fork for EE – the paid edition has many extra plugins providing functionality such as extra importers, auth methods, search functionality etc. The interface itself has evolved several times and we're still adding new hooks to enable plugins to integrate with different areas of the product.

This approach has really made the private fork much more maintanable.

tommoor··on Popover API
They're Yorkshire Puddings ;)
tommoor··on [dead]
It's depressing to see how many replies here are treating the cloned design as though it's some throwaway detail, like the design is just a coat of paint on top of the code.

We (at Linear) have spent half a decade iterating to get to this point of refinement in design and UX. To have another funded startup straight up clone it is so disheartening.

tommoor··on Tesla recalls all cybertrucks for faulty accelerator pedals
This is a good explainer video: https://twitter.com/garageklub/status/1779571445930324456
tommoor··on Ask HN: Is AngelList Legit?
It's to protect the startups from hundreds of tiny checks emailing and hassling them. There is a line of communication between the founder and the syndicate which is technically the real investor here.
tommoor··on Ask HN: Is AngelList Legit?
Lol, that's Angie's List.
tommoor··on Sam Bankman-Fried sentenced to 25 years in prison
That would be nice, but what are the other on-ramps from fiat that are usable for mainstream folks? (Genuinely asking)
tommoor··on The end of Airplane.dev
It's gone, the sign-in page is there but it doesn't function
tommoor··on The end of Airplane.dev
As a customer and one of those early adopter and champions of Airplane this really was particularly frustrating to experience.

I was also surprised at how poorly the shutdown was communicated, a single email went out and there was never any followup. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a reasonable percentage of their customers that were shocked on March 1st to find out they could no longer login to the product.

Literally no-one – the majority of high-tech consumer electronics would stop being produced as soon as existing chips run out.
tommoor··on Post mortem on Linear incident from Jan 24th, 2024
I wasn't personally aware of the migration until after it had been executed, but if I'd reviewed the PR I'm not confident I would have known any better. It doesn't feel intuitive that any table with any foreign keys gets completely wiped.
