tomlockwood··on How Anthropic teams use Claude Code
Yeah sweet what's the burn rate?
tomlockwood··on US AI Action Plan
This is an incredibly funny thing to say in the face of Murdoch.
tomlockwood··on Dev jobs are about to get a hard reset and nobody's ready
Sam Altman and the money.
tomlockwood··on Dev jobs are about to get a hard reset and nobody's ready
Yeah the current Vibe for me seems to be: Congratulations, you trained a giant machine that makes copying code from Stackoverflow marginally faster.
tomlockwood··on Dev jobs are about to get a hard reset and nobody's ready
Agreed. Where's the code?
tomlockwood··on Dev jobs are about to get a hard reset and nobody's ready
Often see these glowing reviews.

Where's the code?

tomlockwood··on Coinbase, famously a "no politics" company in 2020, sponsors a military parade
Planned by the president you say?
tomlockwood··on Coinbase, famously a "no politics" company in 2020, sponsors a military parade
Absolutely agree, it's incredible. Being political is when someone says something I don't like, of course!
tomlockwood··on How long it takes to know if a job is right for you or not
For me it generally takes six months, because as a reflection on my own headspace, it takes that long for me to trust that my intuition isn't just imposter syndrome/anxiety.
tomlockwood··on Google shared my phone number
I disagree. They're hard for a non-technical user to acquire in bulk. This makes me think their purpose isn't really to prevent bot farms.
tomlockwood··on Google shared my phone number
I've been narrowing my eyes at the "add your phone number/backup email" thing for a while now because it seems like a transparent and deceitful attempt to increase the reach of the FB/Google "cross device graph". So seedy.
tomlockwood··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (May 2025)
I'm writing a doorknock organising application for an Australian climate action community group, using lots of PostGIS and as much vanilla js as I can! Super fun so far.
tomlockwood··on The Utter Flimsiness of XAI's Processes
If you're worried about a serious subject not being taken seriously, I'd encourage you to be outraged by someone slapping a prompt about it on the front of an extremely complex machine and expecting it to just work.
tomlockwood··on First baby born in UK to woman with transplanted womb
I think there are tests that intelligent people can describe which demonstrate the phenomena exists. That's what science is.
tomlockwood··on An appeal to companies doing AI
I've tolerated AI autocomplete in VSCode but I am a bee's dick away from turning it off, because it so often generates a huge chunk of code that is ALMOST correct, and determining where it is wrong is as much a chore as writing it would have been. But, it's like I've got a junior-coder sidekick who doesn't take any feedback. Not great.
tomlockwood··on First baby born in UK to woman with transplanted womb
Which part of my question are you having difficulty understanding? If this is so important and accurate surely you can name and explain the important and accurate tests, and their results. Maybe it isn't as simple as you say?
tomlockwood··on First baby born in UK to woman with transplanted womb
So which tests with which results would you rely on?
tomlockwood··on First baby born in UK to woman with transplanted womb
I guess it doesn't answer my question then.
tomlockwood··on First baby born in UK to woman with transplanted womb
So the SRY cheek swab test that the IOC ruled ineffective before the 2000 Olympics is what you think is accurate? Interesting.
tomlockwood··on First baby born in UK to woman with transplanted womb
What tests with what results would conclusively show which individuals went down which pathway?
tomlockwood··on 4chan Sharty Hack And Janitor Email Leak
Interesting input, thanks for sharing!
tomlockwood··on The Post-Developer Era
Always bewildering to me when people look at the demographics of conservatives, leaning old and rich, and think that they just fell out of the coconut tree. No. Those people were sometimes "progressives" in their time and later became conservatives.

Same as it ever was. No further explanation needed. Not a new phenomenon.

ed: "No, it must be the fault of the left." must be a reassuring thought, but let me occams razor that for you: when these people were younger, they were selfish, and as they weren't yet the status quo, they were progressive. When these people got older, they were still selfish, and as they were the status quo, they were conservatives. Simple.

tomlockwood··on Harvard's response to federal government letter demanding changes
I am alarmed by how quickly Americans leap from the suggestion that we tax the super-wealthy more, to this idea of full communism.
tomlockwood··on Harvard's response to federal government letter demanding changes
So, no?
tomlockwood··on Harvard's response to federal government letter demanding changes
> No money was "funneled" to Elon. He created it.

No he didn't.

> Starlink is very popular, so it must be making peoples' lives better.

So is meth.

tomlockwood··on Harvard's response to federal government letter demanding changes
Not sure any of these companies have really appreciably made the lives of people better. Sure seem to have funnelled more money to Elon though.
tomlockwood··on Harvard's response to federal government letter demanding changes
So you'd rather have someone unelected with that money. Don't y'all live in a democracy?
tomlockwood··on Harvard's response to federal government letter demanding changes
Could you help me understand why an individual with one billion, needs two? At what point would you accept that someone has more money than they'd reasonably need? And if you just thought of a maximum amount, then, wouldn't the acceptable tax rate over that amount, be 100%?
tomlockwood··on The Decline of the U.S. Machine-Tool Industry and Prospects for Recovery (1994)
This idea of self-reliance has been tried, and probably the greatest example of it is an extremely funny one. North Korea.

Their primary ideology is "Juche": "Juche posits that a country will prosper once it has become self-reliant by achieving political, economic, and military independence." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juche

Maybe America can do it better?
