tomcorrigan··on "Australia Tax" is real: Infrastructure and Communications report
It may suit your political narrative to claim that junk white bread costs over $4 a loaf but the facts are markedly different. http://www.news.com.au/business/first-it-was-milk-now-grocer...

Please don't shoot from the hip when you are so ill informed.

tomcorrigan··on Pin Payments is Australia’s first all-in-one online payment API
You mean PAYG withholding not FBT. But you are certainly correct that an ABN is not necessary to charge for something
tomcorrigan··on I Don't Want Your Fucking App
Not! Fucking! Always!
tomcorrigan··on The Tyranny of Taxi Medallions
We most certainly do have yearly property taxes in Australia. Your principal place of residence is exempt. Your holiday house, or your office building is not.

That is why residential property is almost entirely freehold not leasehold.

tomcorrigan··on The Tyranny of Taxi Medallions
Doubtful. Land taxes are extremely common in Australia. All land is taxable, however exemptions exist for your own principle place of residence (ie home). If you own a holiday house or investment property then your are liable for land tax. That is the reason houses are primarily sold freehold as opposed to leasehold.
tomcorrigan··on How Phil Libin, CEO of Evernote, Works
I read that little anecdote completely differently. It came across to me not as a story about suppressing hobbies/interests but rather being willing to extend your boundaries/experience new things or live with a bit of chaos in your life. Something that his friend with the perfectly arranged Star Trek VHS collection might not have done. (I know I'm generalising massively here but whenever an anecdote is reduced to a sentence or two it typically relies on stereotypes and generalisations to paint a fuller picture)

Judging by a lot of replies in this thread I think the below statement might be well on the money:

> it seems like some people are grasping for reasons to dislike this guy

tomcorrigan··on Announcing Topaz: A New Ruby
It depends where you look for the common meaning. To native English speakers in the UK, Australia, New Zealand (ie outside North America, coincidentally including the country where the English language developed) specious has one very clear meaning

I would also direct you to the usage examples in your link. All of which use specious in a context that implies deception of outright falsity. I have never ever seen specious used synonymously with obsolescence.

tomcorrigan··on Why we stopped using Drupal for our platform
But Drupal is using symfony2 components, so it doesn't make sense either way.
tomcorrigan··on The Australian Computer Society should be disbanded
From the linked article:

> While dwellings are vacant for a number of reasons they are primarily associated with holiday areas

tomcorrigan··on The Australian Computer Society should be disbanded
> laws that state any home improvement must bring the entire house up to current building codes

This is patently false

> this leads to urban decay and property abandonment on a massive scale

Australia does not have property abandonment nor urban decay on a massive scale. Go to Detroit to witness such things.

tomcorrigan··on How to terminate your worst enemy's Dropbox account for only $795
This is the thing that is holding me back from embracing dropbox with open arms. I of course have separate accounts for work (2 jobs, 2 accounts) and a third private account. I don't mix the data on the for the reasons that the top poster listed. If there was a convenient way to sync all three through the desktop client I would be overjoyed in much the same way I was when gmail/google apps allowed multiple sign ins.
tomcorrigan··on PHP Annotations Are a Horrible Idea
Easily, the annotation parser ignores all comments that it doesn't recognise.

    /**
     * @var integer $id
     *
     * @ORM\Column(name="id", type="integer")
     * @ORM\Id
     * @ORM\GeneratedValue(strategy="AUTO")
     * some comment that the doctrine parser will ignore completely
     */
    private $id;
tomcorrigan··on PHP Annotations Are a Horrible Idea
Please provide an example of such a tool for PHP. Also provide a working example of PHP code where removing all annotations causes working code to fail silently. In my experience with using annotations in PHP if the annotations are missing/invalid the compiling code throws very descriptive error messages.

Your good, valid, technical reasons are anything but.

tomcorrigan··on Computer Glitch brings Melbourne traffic to a standstill
Apparently the reason the tunnels were closed was that Transurban could not operate the emergency sprinkler system and smoke extraction fans. Surely it would have been cheaper for Transurban to pay a few MFB fire trucks to be stationed outside the tunnels and close a lane to guarantee them access in case of an emergency. That way traffic could flow, tolls could be charged, and nobody would be as upset. I am sure Transurban make more than the fire brigade would charge them per hour.
tomcorrigan··on iPhone 5 Teardown
Yeah, it's an Australian $2 coin in one of the photos. I'm quite surprised that being ~16 hours ahead of the competition is worth an airfare to Australia but impressed nonetheless.
tomcorrigan··on Lessons for uncultured web developers
How is this at all relevant to the linked article?
tomcorrigan··on PhpStorm & WebStorm 5.0 Early Access Program started
I too am most excited about the symfony2 support. Especially with regards to type hinting from the dependency injection container.
tomcorrigan··on Dropbox confirms it got hacked, will offer two-factor authentication
I'm just going to quote the HN guideline back to you. > please use the original title, unless it is misleading or linkbait.
tomcorrigan··on Dropbox confirms it got hacked, will offer two-factor authentication
Meh. This has already been posted: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4320429

Also, kindly avoid the linkbait title, dropbox did not get hacked, some of its users' account credentials were compromised on other sites.

tomcorrigan··on Is the new Airport Express an iOS device?
The old one did too
tomcorrigan··on On Atwood's Please Don't Learn to Code
You have missed the point. Your girlfriend did not need to learn to program in order to discover what can be achieved with a basic program.

For the common woman or man the revelation of computing comes from seeing what can be achieved, not how it is achieved.

tomcorrigan··on On Atwood's Please Don't Learn to Code
No. Everybody should learn about computers, how to turn them on, how to browse the internet, etc. Not knowing the fundamentals of programming does not prevent a person from achieving any of the above.
tomcorrigan··on PHP 5.4.0 released
In a word: Yes. Of course, depending on your app YMMV!
