tolerance··on Get your Windows license refund
Is the money refunded related to the cost of the OS license? Why not just advocate that manufacturers and vendors don't pass the cost off to consumers?
tolerance··on Select * from Internet.blogposts
ATProto has the hardest working developer relations department in the game right now.

If this comment is at all relevant to the post under discussion then we should all be championing OpenBSD as the premier Anti-Racist® OS of our time.

tolerance··on Run OpenBSD on DigitalOcean for $4/month
While we are recommending and un-recommending resources https://romanzolotarev.com/bsd/ has been my go-to.

joshua stein's interest in getting OpenBSD running on anything he can provides useful insight too https://jcs.org/tagged/openbsd

tolerance··on Run OpenBSD on DigitalOcean for $4/month
Back in my day a blog post like this would've included a promotional link for $100 in DigitalOcean credits!
tolerance··on Nitter project received cease and desist
Right. All that's left is for us to figure out how to specify the type of banality you and I and our sibling commenter are imagining.
tolerance··on Nitter project received cease and desist
From a legal perspective, I can guess why you think it's bad. But aside from some legitimate use cases (apparently some towns and cities only issue announcements on X, really?) if you hate the platform itself so much but still feel compelled to check out content there then this may be a great opportunity for freedom and growth.
tolerance··on Nitter project received cease and desist
I would love to see a visual representation of what you think those sort of people look like.
tolerance··on Nitter project received cease and desist
In the grand scheme of things I think that this is good.

I don't know man. It sounds like you just want to work at a startup.

For what it's worth...I launched tptacek's Markdown viewer, mdv, like yesterday.

No, I think that you're on to something and I wish you kept the original version of this part of your comment (yes I caught your edit and have it on my clipboard still!) because it touched on what I think about the whole "existential" bit of my own comment a bit more direct (but I think your edit expresses your attitude more sophisticatedly).

Few people have anything that comes anywhere near any sort of philosophical foundation that they can rely on to weather their anxieties. If anything they only strengthen their sensibility to express—and compound—their worries.

tolerance··on Anger, Anxiety and Agency
People typically do not approach existential uncertainties with such intrepidness. I think this is the case for most people who hate AI. This article glosses over that.
tolerance··on Jabber/XMPP: 25 Years of Digital Independence
I had a good technical experience using XMPP once but the community I found using it was an obscure one and I haven't come across another instance of others using it since. No matter how useful a tool is the main hurdle is adoption. This sort of retrospective is useful from an advocacy point of view.
tolerance··on Hister – A private, full content search index that you control
I think that the tells, if they are in fact legitimate, are negligible at best or subtle at worst. It looks like the site uses Tailwind, so if AI was involved it wasn't generating the design from scratch. If it did then I'm impressed because usually it sucks. This is alright.
tolerance··on NetBSD and My Life (2005)
I enjoyed the time I spent browsing the web and reading ebooks while running OpenBSD on a Thinkpad. The same goes for hosting a web page on a VPS I used to rent. I found that what people say about it is true: the documentation is great. To the extent that I needed to tinker I gained a fair amount of coherence about how things worked. This is sort of what I want the guys in my community to experience for themselves.
tolerance··on NetBSD and my life (2005)
I'm considering initiating a campaign to influence a community space that I'm a part of into running NetBSD on some low-risk infrastructure that we may adopt.
tolerance··on ATProto spaces: A new extension to ATProto that enables non-public data
My guess is that the collision is on purpose; to differentiate ATProto from Bluesky the platform, X the platform and "Twitter" the spectral concept we still use interchangeably with X. The intention here may be to differentiate ATProto from these things in a way that is indifferent to X and Twitter's existence and past influence.
tolerance··on Going out of my way to prove I'm not an AI – Ep. #1 – OG images
Don't get me wrong. In general I think you have the right idea.

Take the commonplace CSS/typography decisions that Claude generates. My impression of the past is that people didn't mind if your landing page used Bootstrap or Tailwind because they were products of the human eye for web design. Not only do Claude-generated attempts to imitate those frameworks inherently lack a human touch, the pages that it designs without appearing to deliberately pull from these influences are worse and immediately signal that the entire page is crap.

What should the extra mile look like in this case?

If you're going to go for a gauche aesthetic to signal that there is a person behind it, maybe think twice and consider your audience in between.

Anyway. Does your blog have RSS?

tolerance··on Going out of my way to prove I'm not an AI – Ep. #1 – OG images
Sorry, my flippancy lacked precision.

I meant "don't go out of your way to prove that you are not AI".

Why go out of your way to differentiate yourself from something that by your estimate produces 99% crap? From a design perspective is adding more visuals on top of a visual optimal for a user's experience on the web page? Should taste be sacrificed for whimsy?

Don't go out of your way to prove that you are not AI. I suggest going out of your way to prove that you are totally oblivious to its existence—whether you use it or not—in all of you public facing work.

I'm looking forward to episode 2!
