todipa··on The inception bar: a new phishing method
Wow, didn't even think it was possible to do this.
todipa··on The Heavily Armed Millennials of Instagram
Asking for a friend... how does one get around the paywall without shelling out $1 a week?
todipa··on I tried creating a web browser, and Google blocked me
Send this to the @EU_Commission - they might look into it.
todipa··on A Dutch town put traffic lights on the ground for people staring at their phone
This seems like such an easy solution that is addressing a massive change in behavior -- folks looking at their phones when the car stops.
todipa··on An Irish Pub Born in the Dark Ages
oh god, for a second, I read it Irish Porn in the Dark Ages... I need to go to sleep...
todipa··on North Korea’s military has stolen more than $500m in cryptocurrency
Innovation happens everywhere, at the core but also at the fringes.

Have you ever heard of the Superdollar? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superdollar

todipa··on Keeping the Keck Telescopes Running
I always wondered how old machines get fixed when replacement parts are no longer in production. This was very educational.
todipa··on Ask HN: What's the best way to protect users from phishing attacks?
My brother used to do work for a large medical device company and they used to run these tests every quarter.
todipa··on Roma's Wounding Confession
I grew up in South America, one parent Scandinavian and the other local. We had a housekeeper/nanny the same way in Roma. My Mother was adamant on having the nanny sit with us for every meal, all together. I was a kid back then so I didn't understand why my friends would find it weird when they ate dinner with us.

It is a cultural thing that is probably left over from the colonization era. Things will change but it takes time.

todipa··on US military equipped with tiny spy drones
I have to say, I would love some infrared capabilities on my drone to see what my noisy neighbors are up to.

Wondering what all that stomping is for at 2am?

todipa··on Puerto Rico's solar energy insurrection
I hope they are successful in building a localized grid that supports solar and other renewable sources.

What I don't understand is why towns and cities can't lead the way forward?

todipa··on The Washington State Measles Outbreak
I don't know much about this outbreak but in some parts of the world you are required to have your vaccinations up to date if you want access to public services.

Can't that be implemented at a state/local level?

todipa··on Drift of the North Pole forces early magnetic map update
Glad I emigrated from the center of that red area of the south Atlantic anomaly. No desire to be the guinea pig of a magnetic hole.
todipa··on Instacart paying 80 cents an hour because worker received a large tip
I use instacart weekly. Not going to leave them any tip via the platform anymore...
todipa··on PG&E Files for Bankruptcy Following California Wildfires
I don't think the equity holders call it getting off easy when they lost over 50% of their value in their investment.
todipa··on Ask HN: What is an example of a super simple SaaS that is profitable?
Are there other websites like https://indiehackers.com that you would recommend?
todipa··on Show HN: Notepin – Extremely simple blogging platform
Super interested. Will it be similar to Medium?
todipa··on Voices from the Field: FBI Agent Accounts of the Consequences of the Shutdown [pdf]
To be honest, I just don't understand how we got to a shutdown. I mean the money is there... People pay their taxes regardless.

Is it that congress has not appropriated the money to those accounts? I wish someone could explain me the technicalities of government funding so we as society can lobby our congressfolks to make adjustments

todipa··on Ask HN: When did you lose control of your inbox?
Is there an automated way of unsubscribing?
todipa··on How to Legally Own Another Person
Awesome article. So much to unpack.

"People whose survival depends on qualitative “job assessments” by someone of higher rank in an organization cannot be trusted for critical decisions."

This is so true. People stop thinking critically and in my humble opinion, this is the primary differentiator between a good employee and an average one.

todipa··on Occupational licensing hinders job mobility
What is the right balance of licensing?
todipa··on Why are glasses so expensive? The eyewear industry prefers to keep that blurry
Such a waste of an education for a job that can be done by someone less trained. The only constraint is regulatory.

I get my eye exam checked every year for other more serious and complex diseases so I think there is a role for the more trained medical professionals but these exams need to be disentangled from the expensive professionals. That is the way to bring the costs down to a fraction of what they are...

todipa··on Attention Economy Is a Malthusian Trap
Tech has been synonymous with growth. That is why it was trading at a premium and that is why high growth tech companies continue to be priced at a premium while non-growth tech companies do not.

As a professional investor, I only care about three things: - Long-term stabilized return on capital - Pricing (P/E; EB/EBITDA) - Long-term growth.

The list of companies that check all of those boxes are extremely small

todipa··on SF restaurants are suffocating
You don't need a considerable increase in population to affect prices substantially. You only need to push out the marginal people, the ones who are at the lowest end of the rental spectrum. So to compete, these people are forced to pay a higher % of their salary towards rent, this creates a vicious uptrend in real estate prices.

The only remedy to this problem is to increase housing supply.

Good luck...

Is there no way to countersue Bird Scooter for economic harm?
todipa··on I wanted to like this book
“As our family and close friends know, after a long period of loving exploration and trial separation, we have decided to divorce and continue our shared lives as friends,”

What does loving exploration mean?

todipa··on Cancer Deaths Decline 27% Over 25 Years
The war against cancer is its infancy. There is a long road ahead of us. Take for example Glioblastoma or single cell lung cancer, these problems are really tough to crack.

There aren't many things worse to see than a child die with cancer. If you have either time or money, consider helping out...

There are a ton of ways to do good in this world and one of the most helpful life-changing ones is:

todipa··on Tennessee doctors earn big money denying disability claims
I largely agree with this.

My wife is a physician and the stories you hear are unbelievably sad but most people don't fit the definition of disability by social security. Most people are able to perform another job, however, their training and personality limits them in being reintroduced to the labor markets.

The problem isn't a simple one but there are other solutions such as retraining

todipa··on What is Apple Worth?
"Yahoo Finance estimates Apple’s 5 year earnings growth at 15%. Using a 7% discount rate, that works out to a net present value of $449 billion."

Not sure if I would use those numbers...

todipa··on Cybercrimers stole $0.26M with 6 missed calls
