todipa··on iPhone 11 Pro Camera Review
I have the Nikon full frame D850 along with the holy trilogy of lenses (14-24mm + 24-70mm + 70-200mm f2.8 zoom lenses).

in 2018, for every picture I took with the D800/850, I took +200 iphone pictures.

I still believe there is room for a high caliber camera but I don't want to own it anymore, I just want to rent whenever I need it.

todipa··on Enter the dragon on the road to a trade war
This article reminds me of the mini-trade war between Uruguay and Brazil in the 1990s (I was very young so I don't remember exactly when it was). Brazil decided to close the land border for 2 weeks. In the meantime, Uruguay's dairy exports sat on the border waiting... The products expired, and the government had to bail out the milk cooperative.

They still had a free-trade agreement.

Agreements don't mean anything except in the US, Canada, parts of the European Union, Japan, Singapore, Australia, and a couple of other countries.

Non-tariff barriers are way pretty effective in slowing trade:

US could easily block any food imports until pests are no longer an issue in Chinese food supply chain. https://www.cnbc.com/2019/05/08/voracious-pest-threatens-chi...

US could easily block any products from factories that haven't passed US safety inspections. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-pharmaceuticals-ch...

todipa··on Phone Companies Ink Deal With All 50 States And D.C. To Combat Robocalls
The way I handle this is to create a contact called SPAM RISK and add all the spam calls I get to that contact. My siblings do the same. Once a month, when we go to our parent's house, we sync this contact (we block this "caller"). Our parents are getting old and are starting to fall prey to these robo callers. I haven't figured out another way to help them...

todipa··on Plastic particles falling out of sky with snow in Arctic
I think we should ban the use of plastic where there are viable alternatives. Kids toys are mostly made of plastic when they could easily be made of wood.

todipa··on A Bloomberg reporter’s account of trying to get back his name and credit rating
Just tried to implement a freeze on Equifax. They couldn't verify my identity. Now I have to send a letter. Found a sample - https://media.dojmt.gov/wp-content/uploads/Z-Sample-Security...

Still looking for other samples but what is incredible is that they want me to send them a copy of my Social Security Card.

They have to find a better solution to verifying identities.

todipa··on SEC Investigating Data Leak at First American Financial Corp
Once enforcement is involved, it isn't a kids game anymore. They will dig and dig until they get to the bottom of this. I hope they make their findings public...
todipa··on A Bloomberg reporter’s account of trying to get back his name and credit rating
I wish someone would compile a series of actions that I could take to prevent this from happening.
todipa··on Ask HN: What burning problem are you trying to solve right now?
How to find a good tax planning software. The predominant one on the market has a terrible UX.
todipa··on The Nitty-Gritty of the Equifax Settlement
I didn't know that the payout was capped.

"The fund for paying those $125 payouts is initially capped at $31 million out of the larger consumer fund. So, if more than 248,000 people claim them, each of them will get a prorated payout for less than $125 at first. We’ve asked the legal team representing the plaintiffs in the Equifax proceeding how many people have filed claims so far, but they said they cannot comment on those numbers yet because they are still assessing which of those claims are valid and made by class members."

todipa··on IRS sends warning letters to more than 10k cryptocurrency holders
Chuck Rettig, the new IRS commissioner comes from a tax litigation background. He's got a lot of experience and is preparing for one of the next big tax battles which is how to bring crypto under compliance with the current tax regime.

I still think they lack the technical knowledge to understand crypto and as a result, you'll start to see an increase in information being requested.

In any case, I willing to bet that you'll have a couple of court cases that will really bring crypto into compliance in a way that makes sense for 80% of the people.

todipa··on Health Insurers Make It Easy for Scammers to Steal Millions
I have an anecdote: I had a small fat cyst near my eyelid and the doctor removed in less than 45 seconds.

I later got the bill for multiple cyst removals in both eyes, granted it was only $75, it still was wrong. I contacted the office and said that this is simply not true and if they don't remove this from the bill, I would contact the insurance company. They argued with me saying that they had in fact removed many of them in both eyes.

If you look at it from the Doctor's POV, he is lying because there is a low risk of getting caught. The penalty for getting caught is probably not high enough.

There are too many variables to say when exactly. It depends on how much equity you get as an employee.

There is quite a lot of randomness of what gets to the front page of HN. I'm curious to understand better why some days it doesn't make it but then on one day it does. I believe there is nothing wrong with reposting something, as long as you aren't spammy.

This post was actually pretty interesting to read and I'm glad it finally made it to the front page.

todipa··on My parents didn’t tell me they skipped my vaccines. Then I got sick
I don't understand how skipping vaccines is still legal. If you go to public school, then you need to be vaccinated. Otherwise, you go to jail.
