todfox··on Wearing flashy/status clothes makes people less likely to cooperate with you
I refuse to wear or display any corporate logo, even if I generally like the company or its products. I buy unbranded clothing. When I can't get something unbranded (like a decent parka), I remove or obliterate the logo. I covered the apple on my phone and computer with electrical tape, even though I've been a Mac user for nearly 30 years.

I am not a billboard. I reject status and status seeking behavior. I refuse to help corporations with their marketing and promotion. I wouldn't even do it if they paid me because I am against advertising. It's all manipulative and depraved and it promotes status and class.

todfox··on Ask HN: Are there any good poverty simulator games?
Jones in the Fast Lane: https://jonesinthefastlane.com

You start in poverty and can work your way out, but you can also get trapped. It certainly gives you the feeling of the grind: eating only the cheapest food, earning barely enough, having no time after work.

todfox··on Steve Wozniak: Steve Jobs wasn’t a natural-born leader
Maybe reporters keep asking him the same questions.
todfox··on Intel's $20B Ohio factory could become world's largest chip plant
Columbus is not in the Lake Erie watershed. It is in the Ohio River watershed. The Great Lakes Compact does not allow Columbus to get its water from Lake Erie.
todfox··on macOS Monterey
This is an elitist view and there is nothing wrong with that. Don't dumb down desktop computers for those of us who like and understand them as they are. Everyone else can use an iPad.
todfox··on Good Riddance, TurboTax. Americans Need a Real ‘Free File’ Program
Not to cut Intuit any slack, but in my mind there already is a useful free file program. I've been totally satisfied with Free File Fillable Forms for many years. I wouldn't trust the guided programs even if they were free.
todfox··on Whatever Happened to UI Affordances?
For more of these daily annoyances: https://grumpy.website

The growing user hostility of UIs makes me want to stop developing software and even stop using computers. I started using computers because they made more sense to me than a lot of things. Now, I'm encountering these little moments of illogic and unreason every hour of the day.

It's not just beginners who need little cues. I'm deeply familiar with the APIs behind many of these monstrosities and yet I still find myself annoyed or momentarily confused by UIs that minimize, obscure, and hide in the name of Design.

todfox··on There have been 7M-13M excess deaths worldwide during the pandemic
Well said. Getting vaccinated when you're technically low risk may seem selfish, but it still benefits others. It would be politically untenable for the US to give away its remaining doses until a substantial portion of its own population is vaccinated. Whether that's right or wrong, the faster we get there, the better.

Your altruism is laudable but don't think this can't hurt you. I know a healthy, athletic 25 year old who has needed an inhaler every day for the last year because of her moderate, non-hospitalized Covid case. Her lung damage will probably not heal any further at this point.

I would get vaccinated ASAP. You're as deserving as anyone else. You don't want to risk spending the rest of your life with impaired breathing.

todfox··on What Did We Lose When We Lost the Stars?
I think there is a misunderstanding here. I was referring to the illumination of aircraft by lights on Earth, not lights on the aircraft itself. The light coming from Earth is wasted.
todfox··on What Did We Lose When We Lost the Stars?
When I walk around my town at midnight, I often stand and notice how the lights just reveal empty space everywhere. Nobody is around. Nobody is even using the all that light! Driving at night would be dangerous without light of course, but that's why they have headlights. Those lights are burning all night long and they're not even doing anything.

People seem to abhor silence and emptiness. They hate it, or maybe they're afraid of it. They always want to fill it with something.

I love to walk around in the middle of the night because the car traffic around here virtually stops and silence and some degree of darkness returns. The busyness goes away. I'm always amazed that I rarely see anyone else out at night. Don't others crave emptiness too?

todfox··on What Did We Lose When We Lost the Stars?
That's a great idea. It wouldn't impose a cost or a require permanent change to anyone's property. If people could only see what they're missing!
todfox··on What Did We Lose When We Lost the Stars?
There's much less air traffic at night, and what traffic there is, is probably on an IFR flight plan.

But lighting would only really help VFR pilots if it was coming from above and they were looking down. Looking out and up from a small airplane cockpit to avoid traffic is really impractical. You're better off relying on ADS-B.

todfox··on What Did We Lose When We Lost the Stars?
This is one issue that breaks my heart more than almost any other. I never saw a truly dark sky or the milky way until I was in my early 30s. Now I take regular road trips out west to experience it.

People are so oblivious to light pollution. They don't realize how absurdly bright our lights are and how little they're actually needed. At minimum, they shouldn't be lighting the undersides of airplanes.

I didn't know what else I could do about this, so I inserted a light pollution level in my indie game. You have to replace these hideously bright outdoor lamps with full cutoff fixtures to gradually get the stars back. I wish there was more I could do.

The problem has to be educational. If the public valued the night sky, they would be amenable to fixing it. But how do you accomplish that if you're not any good at marketing or communicating?
