toby··on What “The Social Dilemma” Gets Wrong [pdf]
> See, I've always heard Facebook makes the largest part of its money by selling data about its users.

Categorically untrue. They sell advertising space. The data is used to target the ads, which are often paid for based on performance.

Selling the data would be a terrible idea... if anyone else had it, it would undermine their value proposition.

toby··on Google TV
I bought my TV from Costco, it has Roku built-in and I think it gets the same software updates. The full integration has some advantages, like having a single remote that stops the playback when I turn the TV off.
toby··on Frugality Is Non-Linear (2019)
Whether it's for the essence or the achievement of a particular degree, getting a better job earlier in life has substantial effects on lifetime earnings. Whatever the credential gets you, for whatever reason, it's advantageous to have more time to take advantage of it.

The parent could have used MD (there are some people who switch careers to become doctors in their 30s) and it would be the same... just having a chance to have been a doctor for longer will put you ahead.

toby··on Blizzard cofounder launches new gaming endeavor Dreamhaven
From Wikipedia: "Many high-profile actors refused to join SAG initially. This changed when the producers made an agreement amongst themselves not to bid competitively for talent."

Tech companies have tried this in the past, now this would typically be met with an antitrust suit rather than creating a guild. Not sure which is preferable.

toby··on Nikola Denies 'Fraud' Allegations, Threatens Legal Action Against Short-Sellers
Worth nothing that Theranos wasn't public, there was no opportunity to short-sell. If there had been they might have been exposed much earlier and done a lot less harm.

I knew several people who said what they were claiming was impossible but they didn't really have any interest in being the whistleblower.

toby··on Is Spotify Killing the Top 40?
This article says that the Top 40 has dropped from 35mm to 30mm plays on a Wednesday. Then it says:

"The decline is likely partially the result of an overall decrease in streaming after Covid-19 hit the US, due to the absence of people listening to music on commutes and in stores. But it’s not just that. The biggest hits are declining, while the streaming of smaller hits remains about the same."

Seems like it could be "just that". This analysis is weird without knowing whether overall numbers have dropped and whether retail / gyms / public spaces primarily played Top 40 hits (which I'd guess is likely).

toby··on SEC Modernizes the Accredited Investor Definition
Most of your examples are designed to prevent unqualified people from hurting others, the main exception being the regulated drugs one.

This raises the question of whether a similar system could exist for investments. Do you think there could be a "prescription" investment where you'd need a sign-off from someone with certain qualifications who'd consider your financial position and what you were planning to do?

toby··on Remote work is reshaping San Francisco, as tech workers flee and rents fall
The SF Board of Supervisors has a lot of control over the supply and has used it to make it very hard to build anything. High prices are a direct result of low supply.

I'm not sure I'd call it incompetence though, they are very motivated to keep existing landowners happy. Higher prices and fewer neighbors to deal with is an easy way to do that.

toby··on America might wield its ultimate weapon of mass disruption
There's a great podcast about this: https://www.thisamericanlife.org/662/transcript

To me the most interesting part was about how Tip O'Neill and Ronald Reagan were pretty close friends:

"Then one day, I picked up the paper and read where he had made a statement about me that was pretty harsh. And I called him, and I said, Tip, I thought we had a relationship here, where we could do business together. And, oh, now, I read in the paper that you said--

And he interrupted me and said, well, buddy, that's just politics. He said, after 6 o'clock, we're buddies. We're friends. I did take it that every once in a while, when we had a meeting, I would visibly set my watch at above 6 o'clock."

toby··on Hackers take over prominent Twitter accounts in simultaneous attack
A senior engineer (juniors would not have this level of access) risking their job and facing prosecution for an amount that would certainly be far less than their salary? That doesn't seem likely.
toby··on U.S. backs down in fight with Harvard, MIT over student visas
"well-meaning"? Are we still talking about the international student deportation order?
toby··on The international student bait-and-switch
Sorry, what? How do international students, being an "insignificant" amount of the total, contribute to skyrocketing costs?
toby··on The international student bait-and-switch
I was an international student (undergrad) and your impression is... well, it differs from mine.

No need-blind admission (except at the school I went to, the others literally told me I was too poor) and no government funded student loans (my private loans, which were still non-recourse, started accruing 12% interest the day I took them out)

Graduate school is slightly different in that you're often working for the school to cover the tuition, and who is eligible will be based on the donors and the program administrators.

toby··on What if aviation doesn’t recover?
I won't argue with your overall point, just to say that I don't think most people consider commercial air travel to be the least bit "romantic". It's a way to get somewhere, sometimes for work, sometimes to see family, sometimes for a vacation (I suspect in that order).

I was curious so I looked it up, the term "jet set" originates from the 1950s when it probably was romanticized as only the very wealthy could afford to fly.

toby··on The stable marriage problem and modern dating
I agree with this generally. For most people I know in happy marriages it's not because they figured out exactly what they wanted and found "the one" -- as much as they love their partners there are probably a lot of people they would have been happy with.
toby··on The stable marriage problem and modern dating
>> (it's since pivoted to a brewery run by active gang members)

Would this be an appropriate place to share that story? Because I'm intrigued

toby··on Searchable PPP Loan Data
Huge hit is a bit of an understatement... they've cancelled all future conferences, likely permanently
toby··on Where $521B in U.S. Small-Business Aid Went
Wasn't the whole point minimal means-testing to get this done quickly? Plenty of small businesses would have had to lay off employees while waiting for someone to decide if the application was good enough.

Construction is an interesting outlier, I know of plenty of people in service industries who at least got something rather than just being completely screwed.

toby··on Debubble
Same. A matching site should at least seed with some content, I'm just staring at a blank screen.
toby··on The Fourth of July
Having done it I completely agree with you. There were a lot of frustrating hurdles over many years, but this was so much more than that and I'm really happy for the final ritual.
toby··on The Fourth of July
That's where I was naturalized! I had mixed feelings about being required to go to a ceremony even though all my paperwork was done, but in the end it was really special.

On the way home I went to the Betabrand factory (which was on Cesar Chavez), told them that I had just gotten naturalized and that I wanted to buy some of their Stars and Stripes pants. They thought it was so cute that they created a special discount code for people who have just become citizens.

Another fun thing was walking through the mission, which has a lot of immigrants, people would see the envelope I was holding and yell "congratulations" or even high-five me.

That night my friends took me to a baseball game. It was overall a lovely induction.

toby··on A look at the Gemini protocol: a brutally simple alternative to the web
You're pretty much correct. Even in this thread there are people saying "oh the Gemini browser can decide whether to render inline images", which is exactly what Mosaic did.

The main advantage this has is that it will not get popular enough to experience the scope creep that the web did so will probably remain relatively pure.

toby··on People who can't see things in their mind could have memory trouble too: study
I assume I have aphantasia, since I've never been able to "visualize" in the way that other people seem to be able to.

It seems to be strictly limited to visual imagery however. I remember lyrics / poems / quotes better than most people I know and I do pretty well on those wine-training smell tests. I can easily hear music in my head.

I've never really thought of it as a disadvantage, I assumed that I just had a different kind of imagination.

toby··on Oculus sunsets Go, will add easier Quest app distribution
Oh also, it's not really a game but there's something called "Ritchie's Plank Experience". I'm afraid of heights and I seriously pulled the Quest off my head the first time cause I freaked out.
toby··on Oculus sunsets Go, will add easier Quest app distribution
That's true, there are others where I'm legitimately frightened. I think of Beat Saber as a good first game.
toby··on Oculus sunsets Go, will add easier Quest app distribution
Agreed, that's another easy one to jump into. Love it also.
toby··on Oculus sunsets Go, will add easier Quest app distribution
Personally I still think beat saber is the best combo of easy to figure out plus completely engaging (i.e. you forget where you actually are)
toby··on Oculus sunsets Go, will add easier Quest app distribution
Completely agree. I was wholly unimpressed with "VR" until I got a Quest and now I think it's a shame that 3DoF ever pitched as such.
toby··on After GitHub CEO backs Black Lives Matter, workers demand an end to ICE contract
Your argument from first-principles makes sense, but I just don't think a lot of us are comfortable living in a world where disabled people have to pay twice as much (or whatever the additional cost would be) for groceries. The fact that there's no movement to repeal the ADA would suggest most people feel that way.

I was camped right next to it, and I work with one of the people who built it.
